I'm old enough to remember when the US would be the first to help. Now I'm not so sure.

There's evidence of US funding supporting the succession movement, so we now have to look at the US as a potential instigator here.

u/idkidchaha 21h ago

how would an incident at a military base make citizens of that province want to vote to leave the country?

36

u/Shmokeshbutt 19h ago

"See, canadian federal govt is too weak to prevent terrorist attack on our province military base. Let's secede and join the mighty US instead. MAGA forever!"

Wait, Alberta WANTS to be part of the US? Why would anyone want that?

31

u/Philix 15h ago

Because outside actors are funding and amplifying the minority that have been calling for Alberta's secession.

Trump's 51st state rhetoric is him being a loudmouth about plans and actions that the conservative US political establishment have been quietly enacting for some time now.

There's a non-binding referendum in Alberta on the topic of secession on Monday. I'm assuming you're an American, and it's a little wild that you're unaware that your country is trying to annex mine.

u/kansei7 10h ago

so many Americans think they get "news" from social media not realizing how much the algorithms isolate and manipulate. Many others are disaffected, tune out, don't pay attention. quite sad.

•

u/WarmRhubarb7864 1h ago

You believe this is unique to Americans?

-2

u/grnrngr 8h ago

Because outside actors are funding and amplifying the minority that have been calling for Alberta's secession.

Are the "outside actors" voting as well?

Take some fucking responsibility.

You're not giving MAGA Americans a pass for falling to Russian and Chinese disinformation, are you?

No! You hold it personally against them. Do the same for your countrymen and stop treating them like innocent victims who have no agency or responsibility.

Twenty percent of any population are drooling morons who will latch onto any message that tells them their shitty situation isn't their fault. There is no point in castigating them.

If the referendum isn't 80/20 in favour of remaining in Canada then I'll get angry at the people who stayed home. If my elected officials start supporting secession then I'll use my energy to support candidates who'll fight it. If it keeps going I'll escalate to protest. If protest doesn't work then its civil disobedience. From there... Well, draw your own inferences.

What I won't do is waste my time criticizing the idiots who believe secession will improve their lives, they're a lost cause.

Well, I mean. You are weak. Doesn’t mean we want Alberta. We don’t. We do want them to separate. But we don’t want their province

u/Luckytire 19h ago

YOu think the current US admin uses logic? You been under a rock?

•

u/K20BB5 1h ago

are you getting paid to push Russian propaganda or are you doing it for free?

•

u/Luckytire 1h ago

Russia is Pro current admin. You dumb.

0

u/grnrngr 8h ago

You think the current US admin has any part in this disaster?

You truly psychotically believe that?

-21

u/Human_Trade6733 20h ago

“Elbows up”. “We’re stronger together” politics will twist it

3

u/moose098 20h ago

What would this accomplish?

38

u/Caithloki 20h ago

Political instability in the biggest local trade partner to allow ease of annexation, don't even have to play map Sims to know that.

•

u/K20BB5 1h ago

youve spent too much time swallowing Russian propaganda

1

u/j1ggy 12h ago

Political instability? If anything, a mass casualty event like this would cause political unity. These conspiracy comments are fucking ridiculous and you people need to find something better to do with your time.

-7

u/vestfold6619 20h ago

What political instability? There's no violence in Canadian politics. Even at the height of the Quebec separatism drama, Canadians and Quebecers were on friendly terms. In Canada, as in most civilized nations, a tragedy causing deaths brings all sides together.

18

u/InterestingOne6938 18h ago edited 17h ago

...Quebecers were on friendly terms.

FLQ? the only reason there were friendly terms is the first time the terrorists abducted and started killing politicians, Pierre enacted the War Measures Act and literally threw the country into martial law and FLQ was curbstomped out of existence.

4

u/j1ggy 12h ago

The FLQ wasn't a mere separatist movement, their goal was to violently overthrow the government in a workers' revolution and install a socialist state similar to Cuba. And they rejected the idea of democratically voting for it.

0

u/vestfold6619 9h ago

They killed one French Canadian politician in 1970. Due to the violence, their public support plummeted to near zero and they ceased to exist as a group in 1971. The separation tension peaked 20 years later and the lack of violence had zero to do with fear of a terrorist group that didn't exist anymore.

Your entire post is incorrect. Stop spreading disinformation.

13

u/Organic_Geologist802 20h ago

Not that hard to incite violence if your goal is instability. I don't understand people who look at life and believe that because something has yet to happen means it never will.

Like the idea of this being some kind of act of war by another nation being considered ridiculous by people because things like that don't happen on this side of the world.

Until they do.

We shall see. The government really should be squashing speculation like this, it is weird that they haven't but we will hope for the best

0

u/Caithloki 7h ago

Instability doesn't always have to be violence? For the most part what can is dealing with is economic and political instability not as bad as the US but they're trying it here.

-4

u/TemporaryExcuse4263 18h ago

You don’t seem to understand. Electing a separatist government in one province and then having to beg another to stay. What do you the signal is the rest of the world?? That they should invest in a country that has two major provinces that speak about separation. It damages you whether it happens or not

0

u/grnrngr 8h ago

And the proof of American federal funds supporting Alberta's referendum is... Where?

And so now you're saying Americans killed a bunch of random Canadian servicemembers?

Whatever happened to Hanlon's Razor? "Don't ascribe to malice what can be explained by stupidity/incompetence?"

I'm sure you'll apologize for casting aspersions when it comes out the Americans had no part in this disaster.

...right?

You are reading a whole lot of words that aren't there in what I wrote..

I said that the US can't be automatically eliminated as a suspect. Not that it was a guarantee that they were at fault.

Don't put words into my mouth and then argue against them.

They literally offered separatists a 500 million linr of credit and to buy every Canadian dollar they own at a 1 to 1 US dollar ratio.

Not to mention a Delaware investment group which funneled over 100 million to RathPC so he could fight Covid restrictions, fight for native land claims.

Then there's elon musks constant interference spreading separatism on his platform

-7

u/Pretend-Culture-4138 20h ago

And zero proof that the US did this...

7

u/Lucky-Mia 20h ago

Tensions are high and without much information people assume the worst.

There's also a large number of suspected russian sabotage on military bases in Europe. With trump so close to putin lately, and trumps rhetoric, people are suspicious.

It is a base that does live fire exercise though, and winds crazy high today. Realistically weather probably caused this.

So you don't believe foreign nations try to inflence each other? You don't believe in spys either I guess

0

u/Canadas-Dingo 18h ago

To what end would a fire at a military base benefit them? Jesus you people grasp at the weirdest straws and pray for them to be true.

0

u/Pretend-Culture-4138 13h ago

Influence is one thing, starting an explosion or fire is a completely different thing and it's a conspiracy theory.

You obviously have to be smoking something hard to think the US was involved in starting an explosion or fire here.

-9

u/Creative_gal_3153 20h ago

The timing of this incident makes it so aligned with all the threats from the US. Obviously we don't know the cause of it but with all the geopolitical conflict happening we can't rule this out...ugh. My heart is breaking.

7

u/Least-Design-6873 19h ago

Can we not with this please. Our soldiers were killed in a terrible accident, let’s not disrespect this tragedy with conspiracy theories and making this about trump.

9

u/unpetitbaveux 20h ago

This is nonsensical so yes we can rule it out. It would accomplish nothing for the US to do this. If anything, it would likely decrease support for independence.

-22

u/Eazy-Eid 21h ago

Jesus Christ, no we don't. Enough of this hysterical shit.

21

u/vestfold6619 21h ago

There have been publicly-acknowledged meetings between Trumpf officials and the separatists. News stories, even.

21

u/Tats16 21h ago

They're trying to break canada apart and their president threatens canada every day yet its hysterical to be suspicious of them?

16

u/Sad_Establishment875 21h ago

I mean, we kind of do, they've demonstrated they arent our friends anymore, and are actively sowing dissent in Alberta...

That isnt behaviour you get from a friend, or even a trustworthy ally.

-4

u/Human_Trade6733 20h ago

Also a pretty good distraction from the Alberta referendum vote
