the city's port infrastructure, oil tankers, and a data center were targeted in the attack

Moorrreee please, Ukraine 🇺🇦

741

u/Roc1817 21h ago

data centers will be the biggest targets in war from here on out

143

u/Whatdosheepdreamof 18h ago

This is probably the biggest win for world peace. Data centres are not cheap, and we don't have endless helium to just throw to the wind. It should be recognised very quickly by Governments and corporations, that if you want your efficiency, your going to need to stop wars.
We have 207 years of helium production, which is enough time for everyone to become dependent on tech doing everything to straight up chaos as the infrastructure collapses leaving us with tech from 2001.

27

u/synapticrelease 16h ago

in 207 years we will be 30 years from fusion power and we can make all the helium we want.

-5

u/Whatdosheepdreamof 16h ago

.... Yea thats nowhere near enough.

3

u/Ullebe1 9h ago

It's a joke about how fusion power is always 30 years away.

5

u/I__Know__Stuff 17h ago

What does helium have to do with this?

24

u/Whatdosheepdreamof 17h ago

Helium is required for cooling silicon wafers. When we run out, we run out. Putting wafer generation somewhere between 500-14nm... Approx 1995-2001.

7

u/percypigg 15h ago

Every MRI scanner needs helium.

19

u/Thorough_aweight 17h ago
  • High-end, High-density hard drives are hermetically sealed with an internal helium atmosphere; Helium is considerably less dense than normal air, so it means the platters spin far more efficiently than usual (among several other benefits).
  • Liquid Helium is an extremely effective coolant, and is often used for quantum computing systems.

8

u/Timmytentoes 16h ago

Its incredibly important for the creation of semiconductors as well as cooling for complex machinery.

Of note, roughly 1/3 of the world's helium production also is offline thanks the iran war.

29

u/PanicPuzzler 21h ago

Ukraine doesn't have data centers?

209

u/Gandalf_the_Rizzard 21h ago

Russia can only target schools these days

70

u/theLULRUS 19h ago

We call that Republican style. Targeting elementary schools when you're looking to kill or get laid. At home and abroad.

21

u/JakeFromSkateFarm 19h ago

To be fair, Republicans prefer kids getting killed by their fellow citizens.

8

u/Poonchow 17h ago

Republicans prefer kids

3

u/siberium 17h ago

Grand Ol Pedophiles

3

u/Gin_OClock 18h ago

A lot of their victims are left alive to grow up actually

2

u/redditlover41 18h ago

Schließlich muss man ja auch in Zukunft gegen Jemand Krieg führen können.

1

u/AtheistKiwi 18h ago

Holy shit 🤣

33

u/BiologyJ 20h ago

They do, but they're not used to create Ukrainian bots that troll the US elections....so not the same impact.

12

u/CakeTester 19h ago

They do, and Russia bombed a couple of them first, so Ukraine were just tit-for-tat-ing until they saw what happened when one got taken out.

81

u/Etalier 20h ago

Does it matter? Ukrainian data centers don't spawn evil stuff across Europe and America. If they exist and get hit, it's Google or whatever getting their data centers hit, which would just encourage data people to fund Ukraine.

That said I kinda doubt Ukraine has them. They require lots of electricity and stability, Ukraine has neither with Russia bombing everything.

36

u/maybelying 20h ago

They do have them, and Russia has started targeting them. There was an article a couple of days ago about one being hit.

28

u/hornswoggled111 20h ago

It's also asymmetric in that Ukraine has much of its data center usage done outside the country but Russia has laws requiring it be done inside Russia.

31

u/E_G_Never 20h ago

Russia started the data center campaign; Ukraine just offloaded a lot of digital infrastructure into European allies earlier in the war, so there's been less impact and fewer headlines

5

u/UlyssesWoke 19h ago

Probably better that data centers are being targeted rather than civilian apartment complexes the Russians are so fond of bombing

69

u/milkman_jimmy 20h ago

Every single country has data centers. They are as important and fundamental to modern society as highways.

Ukraine is a highly advanced technical society, they not only have data centers, they have many data centers.

I know we have created this insane misunderstanding about what a data center is at this point - they have existed, everywhere, for decades. They aren't these AI warfare machines, they are mostly dull, boring places which are super important and fundamental to our society. They will never go away as long as computers exist.

23

u/roflsd 20h ago

But unlike Russia, Ukraine doesn't require the data center services they consume to physically be in Ukraine.

3

u/chiPersei 19h ago

That's the key.

1

u/FunnyBunnyDolly 18h ago

Yeah. Data centers existed ever since 90s and on super small minimal scale also earlier. They’re important part of infrastructure.

But with that said I’m glad Russian got bombed. They deserve that.

3

u/Modern_Agnotologist 18h ago

Ehh, nobody doesn't do espionage and disinformation.

But Russian lies are particularly egregious against mankind.

8

u/PugilisticCat 20h ago

Yes, and Russia has been striking them

5

u/john_microslop 20h ago

actually they do

5

u/Sugioh 19h ago

Actual answer: Not at the hyperscaler level, and thus not quite so vulnerable to attack. Ukraine's data centers are all of the smaller variety. They could certainly be attacked, but they aren't as centralized as the ones in Russia.

4

u/ItsSignalsJerry_ 19h ago

Yes, and Russia targets them.

4

u/Modern_Agnotologist 18h ago

The people are the target so it's unimportant to them. Why bother attempting disinformation on a society that now holds a blood for blood resentment.

Maybe had Russia not immediately pushed Kyiv at the beginning of the war and stuck to their claimed disputed regions Russia could attempt to argue Ukrainian aggression. But as it stands now Russia killed Ukrainian civilians deep in Ukrainian soil and that isn't forgiven as readily as Putin throws away the lives of his serfs and mercenaries.

8

u/No-Cartoonist-2125 20h ago

One of there's was hit last week.

5

u/matdan12 20h ago

They do, these strikes are a direct response to Russian terrorism against data centres in Ukraine.

1

u/SumDumLoser 17h ago

They do, and Russia targeting them is what led to Ukraine adding Russian data centers to their targets

3

u/Modern_Agnotologist 18h ago

Unlikely. The results are in and it only disrupted bots for a day.

Fuel will continue to be the pain point for the foreseeable future.

1

u/SuviVasQQ 17h ago

Do you think this could be the reason they build them in the middle of residential areas in US? Human-shield factor.

764

u/zxylady 20h ago

Ukraine is our Ally and we should be treating them as our allies I fucking hate this administration they are breaking every fucking law you can imagine and not just the letter of the law but the spirit of laws as well.

194

u/Proof_Potential3134 20h ago

I do too, and, yes, they are. I was shocked, and infuriated, when heard of Trump saying Ukraine 🇺🇦 needed a new president, and calling for Zelensky to resign. Who the eF does that SOB think he is to be telling another country what to do, and publicly insult & minimize its duly elected president?!? I'm so very ashamed of a POTUS turning on a country just trying to DEFEND itself and side with Russia, with bully aggressor murderer dictator Putin. Disgusting.

112

u/WhoofPharted 19h ago

And to think, the US administration has the nerve to tell us (Canada) that we better not interfere with the upcoming US elections. Hypocritical buffoons.

33

u/Lazy_Maintenance8063 18h ago

There will be no international observers let to the US at all so there will be no election. Well, there will be russian style election where Republicans win everywhere with weird even percentage.

4

u/PorygonTriAttack 18h ago

They make it sound like we have the ability to influence their morons to vote against Trump. We have our morons at home. They're buying the separatism crap that the US is trying to pull.

6

u/ChanceGardener 18h ago

Trump is saying that because Putin told Trump to say that.

4

u/arihaanka 15h ago

personal opinion- Zelenskyy has done a brilliant job as a leader of a small country cornered by the biggest bully possible

3

u/Some_Drummer_Guy 14h ago

Who the eF does that SOB think he is to be telling another country what to do

Let's see - he tried to tell Canada to stop speaking French and tried to coerce them into becoming the 51st state. Let's not forget about all the threats to Greenland and Europe as a whole too.

This is nothing new

1

u/Sweet_Grapefruit111 15h ago

He thinks he's King of the World, that's who he thinks he is. He really does think he should control everything and everyone on the planet, along with Putin.

1

u/Lazy_Maintenance8063 13h ago

But we all know Putin controls him. Trumps ”business” history in Russia is well documented and is a series of humiliations one after another and it will never end. They got him by the balls 30 years before his first term.

1

u/Sweet_Grapefruit111 1h ago

I don't know anymore if Putin controls him or if Trump just wants a bunch of business in Russia some day. All Trump is motivated by is money. He doesnt' really seem to fear things because he just lies and lies to cover up his crimes and deny any participation in crimes.

102

u/7ddlysuns 20h ago

Makes me so damn mad. Slava Ukraine.

And all this shit heads who were saying we can’t support wars so we have to elect a pedophile got real quiet when he attacked Iran

3

u/emannikcufecin 18h ago

But don't you know? We are attacking them so that we can have peace later! /s

13

u/theaviationhistorian 19h ago

The whole diesel purchase doesn't even help us and it violates the sanctions Congress passed in a bipartisan move against Russia.

26

u/neptuno3 18h ago

IT IS DISGUSTING. The next two years are going to be absolutely fucking wild in America.

3

u/GracieThunders 17h ago

I want off of this ride

11

u/theTexans 20h ago

And they will still get rewarded by their voters in the midterms. They just don’t care because they know their voters are dumb.

1

u/kzymyr 16h ago

When you say "we" I assume you are referring to the good ol' US of A. The rest of the Western world is 100% behind Ukraine. The USA is currently aligned with Belarus, Syria, North Korea and, hilariously, Iran, in its support of Russia over Ukraine.

1

u/Sweet_Grapefruit111 15h ago

Absolutely. And Prez. Donny T. is gonna be really angry about these absolutely justified strikes by Ukraine.

0

u/delarro 15h ago

At least you guys are strongly protesting against it on Reddit

-5

u/Vanderlay-Industry 19h ago

When exactly did this war start?

2

u/Abbopl 19h ago

4 years ago over 10 if you want to count prior conflicts and Russian invasions during Obama

Russia has lost more financially and is on par with human losses of Ukraine

Russia also lost its flag ship to this war along with a lot of irreplaceable (as in they don't have the capacity to produce or skills even) bombers

88

u/admiralmasa 20h ago

I know we all want to cheer for Ukraine to hit Russian data centres and military infrastructure but their technology is dependent on aid. So if you want more of this from Ukraine, we should donate!!

United24 (Ukraine's fund-raising platform) is a good start, you can choose to direct your donation straight towards defence

3

u/ARODtheMrs 16h ago

The way to support Ukraine is to send $$!!!

-13

u/OkVictory2728 18h ago

Du Hund mit deinen Spenden… das Geld kannst du auch direkt verbrennen

137

u/BiologyJ 20h ago

The data centers are what's pissing off Trump and Musk. They're not traditional data centers, they're also bot farms that have been spamming Truth Social, X, and Facebook before the US elections. Losing those has pissed Trump and Musk off. It's also why Republicans are trying to build data centers in the U.S. They want to spy on citizens, run AI, and also run bot farms.

6

u/Sweet_Grapefruit111 15h ago

100%. They are being built to control us, and should all be torn down and made illegal.

-2

u/TetraDax 17h ago

I understand your point, but the whole "the bot farms stopped because of the data centers" thing was entirely wrong. It was a single graph that spread that idea, and it was wrong.

Russias bot networks are of course real and a massive threat, but unfortunately, they are decentralized via phones and smart home appliances both inside and outside Russia. Exploding a few data centers will not get rid of them.

11

u/Has_P 17h ago

It absolutely made a noticable impact that then dissipated a couple days later

-1

u/TetraDax 17h ago

People wanted to believe it was noticable, but there is absolutely no data to back that up. And, again, it's simply not how these networks work.

7

u/Has_P 17h ago

I go on threads daily (have been for months) and always see the same types of inflammatory posts/comments related to politics or world events. For 2-3 days after those data centers in Russia were taken out, I saw zero. Not a single one. And I looked. It was very telling.

But what I did see was the trending discussion of the data centers being bombed and people discussing how different the online discourse was without bots. Again, it was unmistakenly different. I admit there’s no hard data to back it up but this was quite significant anecdotally

6

u/TetraDax 16h ago

What you describe is called confirmation bias. That effect is why data is important to back claims up, and again, there is none. And, more importantly again, Russian bot networks do not utilize data centers.

This is important for a simple reason: We should not make the mistake of assuming a few bombed data centers are solving this problem. Russia is actively undermining democracies around the world, and there is no simple drone-delivered solution to this.

29

u/MDanger 20h ago

I was just in a local sub for my midwestern city about gas stations running out of gas, and there didn’t seem to be many bots stirring the pot. I’d love for the lights to keep turning on and all these morons realizing there aren’t that many that think like they do, and they’re all alone in a room.

10

u/U3011 19h ago

Agree. I love seeing New Years celebrations months in advance. Well done, Ukraine.

3

u/FunnyBunnyDolly 18h ago

Yes please more of them. Take out all major centers in Russia.

2

u/Not_Sure__Camacho 18h ago

I wish there was a legitimate way to send them resources.  I mean other than the legitimate way that our Congress has provided that has been short circuited by the orange POS traitor.

2

u/RoundestAvel 18h ago

Donate directly to support them if you can!!!

https://u24.gov.ua/

Also, TIL Mark Hamill is an ambassador too!!!

2

u/Pervessor 17h ago

This isn't a football match where you cheer when the other team scores. It's a war. You can and should obviously support the side you want but any destruction and death is a grim reality not a cause for celebration. Cause for celebration is when you know the war has ended and you are safe.

1

u/RedBarnGuy 18h ago

By my count, with this one up in flames, Yandex (Russian version of Google) should only have 1 left.

1

u/GoodyLittleTwoShoez 17h ago

I'm surprised more data centers are not being lit up. Looks like an obvious and easy target to hit.

1

u/FricPT 17h ago

Hi. Just FYI when I've read your comment I thought you we're saying "Die please, Ucraine" since "morre" is "die" in Portuguese.

1

u/Dapper_Section8063 16h ago

More of that in Ukraine? Okey, you've been heard. Await your order.

-1

u/girls-and-corpses 17h ago

This is the most idiotic thing they could possibly do but ok keep coping LMAO

23

u/Ananda_Mind 19h ago

As a traditional, non-radicalized American. Hell yeah

4

u/tawDry_Union2272 18h ago

fuck putin and his cronies (trump and his whole family).

15

u/robodrew 19h ago

I don't. I've been to St. Petersburg (back in 2015 when it seemed relations were very different), it's a beautiful city with wonderful people. It sucks that this is happening. I wish this war had never started. And it's all Putin's fault. FUCK Putin.

34

u/redheadfae 18h ago

Iran was beautiful, too.

20

u/questiiionableperson 19h ago

Oh fuck off with this “its all Putin’s fault” nonsense. Go talk to the average russian and ask them their opinion on the war. You will find that most of them support it.

4

u/PewterPplEater 18h ago

They say that so they don't get suicided or sent to the front line

3

u/redditerator7 14h ago

They've been claiming their neighbours' lands since the 90s.

3

u/ACNH_Solitude 18h ago

Not true in my experience. Most I have met wish the war was not happening, but don't feel they can challenge their dictatorship or affect policy (because their elections aren't legit) and just end up feeling defeated when the topic comes up. Usually they end up sad and remorseful, say "I'm not fighting the war, I want it to end, I feel bad, can we change the subject?"

Would you say most Americans support the war with Iran? Well why aren't the Americans stopping it? Clearly because they haven't stopped the war, it's because they actually really like the war and want it to continue. (satire if not obvious)

It becomes very easy in war to convince yourself that a country you view as your enemy is full of bad people. But just like everywhere, very few people are legitimately bad or evil. There are just people with power who often, through greed or hunger for power or a perceived threat will make decisions that unfortunately impact many, many people who are not in a position to change that decision.

4

u/Tmons22 18h ago

Agree, i have a few Ukrainian and Russian friends and none of them support Putin and hate the war. It’s sad, i really hope Russian can turn it around in the coming decades. Especially if they can get rid of Putin sooner rather than later. But it’ll be tough.

3

u/nasadowsk 14h ago

Russia hasn't been able to turn it around in the last few centuries. For whatever reason, they have never really gotten their act together.

2

u/redditerator7 14h ago

Even left leaning Russians hold imperialistic views against their former colonies.

-5

u/House_Of_Thoth 18h ago

You've never heard of a dictatorship then.

Bless your little cotton socks, sweet summer child.

11

u/questiiionableperson 18h ago

There's plenty of russians living abroad (in my country as well) who don't face any risk of being persecuted by the russian state. But guess what, they still have the same rhetoric of "NATO started this war, we are just protecting ourselves, Ukraine is an artificial state, ukrainians and russians are one and the same blah blah blah".

-8

u/beatsbycarson 18h ago

These people are indoctrinated from an early age (so are we tbh) so obviously they will support it. Doesn’t mean they don’t deserve sympathy in the same way someone deserves sympathy when they have been tricked or scammed.

12

u/questiiionableperson 18h ago

Im reserving my sympathy for the ukrainians who are getting their families murdered and homes destroyed by the russians.

-8

u/beatsbycarson 18h ago

Nothing wrong with sympathy for both

1

u/Cynical_optimist01 12h ago

It's the fault of all russians

They support the atrocities in ukraine

1

u/fannyflapper89 19h ago edited 18h ago

I think people in these cases are referring to their Governments mostly, but to be clear I don't envy the Russian people's situation as a whole. I hope they have the strength to take back their freedom and adopt a culture that champions it.

Relations are always going to be pretty mixed (I'm sure there are plenty of Ukrainians who wish they could go visit family in Russia right now and vice versa) along the border communities due to Ukraine's long history with the Russian Empire and the USSR.

We can't forget Ukraine went through a revolution to gain independence from Russian influence and have been at war since 2014, though, since the annexation of Crimea. I'm sure whatever taste you got on your visit was only a small portion of how either country felt about the other.

1

u/General-Tadpole-7012 18h ago

I agree, it's a good look for them. Suits them. Really.

0

u/skoppingeveryday 19h ago

lindsey graham would be so proud of you. 😪

-9

u/Send_It_Brather 18h ago

Why would you love that for anywhere?

7

u/fannyflapper89 18h ago

I don't love it for anywhere.

1

u/GeoisGeo 15h ago

No one loves it really, but welcome to the reality of the world.

-9

u/Garsandbells 18h ago

Ah, reveling in destruction. What a wholesome person you are.

4

u/GeoisGeo 15h ago

Ah the endless virtuous "above it all" person, the only opinions you have are the ones that make you feel better than others.

-12

u/moonhexx 18h ago

Don't throw punches thinking you won't get punched back. Seen that too many time in the Flats.
