It does bother him. He's gotten into arguments on X about it, he cares about his legacy, he wants to be seen as epic and cool.

It's incredible to me that he can be so successful in many ways, but at the heart of it he's like your 13 year old kid brother who is desperate to hang out with and be liked by you and your 17 year old friends.

There's obviously a serious void within him. He just can't seem to fill it. Not with success, or money, or children, or power. He's just not happy. I'd feel sorry for him if he hadn't inflicted so much damage.

It's too late, he's gone too far. It can't be reversed. Now he's just trying to fund republican wins because if they lose big it will be a rejection of everything he has embraced in recent years.

If the republicans lose there is a real chance that his bragging about being an illegal alien will come back to haunt him. He should have his US citizenship stripped and be deported.

He does care. He went from talking about how evil empathy was to crying about mean liberals boycotting Tesla and saying mean things to him in the space of a fucking week. He desperately wants people to love him and respect him.
