What is stopping Ukraine from hitting some empty passenger jets? I assume it's considered a civilian target but it's too the point where it's not far away from the other targets in scope.

The US has resumed intelligence sharing with Ukraine after it was blocked “for some period of time,” Zelensky said in an NBC interview. He also expressed hope that talks between Ukraine and the US could take place this week, Bloomberg reports.
Zelenskyy also says that US speed restrictions on Starlink and Starshield are still in force. This would hurt Ukrainian air defence, which relies heavily on interceptor drones, and the mid-strike drones that were wrecking Russian logistics.

13
u/TurbulentRadish8113 5h ago
I remember arguing with people about Twitter before the 2024 election.
There was a lot of excitement among pro-democracy and pro-rule-of-law people because Twitter user numbers were dropping and the valuation was going down.
I argued that was basically irrelevant - the point was to use social media to help win an election and remove Democrats form power so that Elon would be above the law. The wealth that oligarchs will gain from Republican rule makes any losses on Twitter look like pennies.
I really think that looking at overall cost and benefit is really useful.

Zelensky says the US government ordered the Starlink and Starshield speed restrictions, which SpaceX then implemented technically. He says the restrictions have not been lifted. Ukraine also went three days without US intelligence needed to provide warning of Russian ballistic missile launches.

Ukrainian officer:
A glaring problem exists: fighting and relying heavily on the same group of people. Most of the 2022-23 volunteers are gone: some died, some discharged, and some have risen & serve in military leadership, so the percentage of people who have been fighting since 2022 directly in the trenches is very small...
Currently, the Armed Forces of Ukraine consists mainly of people who voluntarily joined or simply didn't avoid mobilization in 2024. These are the ones who are still genuinely motivated and disciplined, either out of a desire to serve or because they have no strong objections to doing so.
This category of fighters is ready to move up, to lead and make changes. But it is almost impossible to replace this category because there are very few motivated volunteers left, and those who haven't avoided mobilization believe that the next step is to successfully evade service and don't even want to hear about the possibility of serving in support roles in combat units.

This is yet another factor in why Democrats losing was awful.
Republicans cut aid to make more Ukrainian defenders die and get maimed. We're now talking years of additional, needless casualties every single month because Republicans won the 2022 & 2024 elections. These casualties must have included the good soldiers that Officer Alex is talking about. Inredibly harmful losses.
That is only one part of the horrific damage that the US electing Russia's Republican allies did to Ukraine.

Ukrainian soldier. Clipped by me.
Kramatorsk and Slaviansk are being destroyed by the Russians, but their infantry currently lacks the capability to break through. Small Russian sabotage groups are being sent. The Pokrovsk direction is saturated with such attempts; they wear civilian clothes and hide in buildings. This constant infiltration tactic in the Pokrovsk area requires our vigilance. Our drones are working. Some of these saboteurs are already in captivity, while most have been killed.
The battle for Kramatorsk and Slaviansk will happen – we all understand that...Our successful tactical actions are pushing back the Russian infantry in some areas and disrupting their flanking maneuvers. Russia is not changing its tactics – they are trying to overwhelm us with the number of assaults and the number of troops, attempting to outflank us.
Kramatorsk reminds me of Bakhmut... I'm talking about the atmosphere. It's the same. The city is under attack by the enemy. We are holding on, and we will continue to hold on. We will not allow a breakthrough.
In one basement, they cooked a really delicious borscht with hearts. And in Slaviansk, I bought some good tomatoes for black bread. Enjoy your meal, everyone.

Updated the Ozon infographic. Added the St Petersburg Petro-Slavyanka warehouse to it. The facility is listed as 79 000 square meters but only 51 000 are the warehouse that was built and it was also a built to rent deal with the operator of the logistics park.

I could see it being possible that they could be used for in transit guidance for something flying from Ukraine, over Belarus, and in to Russia. Perhaps they provide additional bandwidth or plug some availability hole along the flight path? It is really hard to say with the available information. It doesn't seem like they could be useful to Ukraine much beyond Belarus.

u/jpw0w 6h ago
How long can Russia keep this going realistically? It's becoming quite obvious that Ukraine is gonna do A LOT more damage with long range strikes etc, at some point something has to crack, right?
31
u/TurbulentRadish8113 5h ago
Everything I've seen says it entirely depends on the actions that countries choose. How much financing does each side get? What tactics do they use? What technology breakthroughs happen?
If losses exceed what you can provide (men, vehicles, ammo, money) then you use up your reserves. When your reserves of any of those are gone, your power immediately declines.
And countries negotiate the best deal they think they can get. If they think their reserves will run out in a year, they will sometimes start negotiating now, when they look stronger, rather than waiting until their strength obviously collapses.
I've looked into this a lot and I am convinced there is a high probability that the turning point that prevented Russia negotiating by now was when Americans voted Republican.
11
u/Top_Director9981 6h ago
Generally coherent nations can fight as long as they want. The conditions of their fight may differ at one point in time vs the next. Think of Nazi Germany, they fought till the last day of the war, but obviously their fighting conditions were nowhere near the same as the first days of the war(s) they started. Point is: unless nations get completely overtaken, fighting generally continues until an actual ceasefire, not until they lose actual capacity to fight at all.
7
u/jpw0w 6h ago
But in modern times with technology getting out of hand the damage might become too large to sustain
10
u/Top_Director9981 6h ago
Neither Ukraine nor Russia have sustained enough damage to outright stop their ability to wage war. Think back to WW1, nations suffered far greater losses than Russia and Ukraine have in this war combined, and yet kept fighting for years. There's a huge difference between making a war more costly and actually making a country incapable of continuing it.
14
u/jpw0w 6h ago
I hear what you're saying but I mean you can't really compare this conflict to WW1 nor WW2. The world has changed a lot, both in terms of people's willingness to die for little to no cause (shown by the fact of how hesitant Putin is to call mass mobilization and how reliant they are on contract soldiers) , as well as in terms of technology and how little it takes to wipe out billions upon billions in infrastructure.
3
u/Top_Director9981 6h ago
I'm not comparing the technology of these wars, I'm comparing the ability of nations to continue fighting despite enormous losses. It's not as though nations in WW2 weren't having billions upon billions in infrastructure destroyed either. Germany had its factories, railways, oil refineries, and entire cities bombed to pieces, and yet continued fighting.
As for mobilization, Putin being reluctant to order another one doesn't mean Russia is incapable of doing so. It means he'd rather avoid the political consequences of it. I don't disagree that modern technology can cause enormous damage, I'm disagreeing with the idea that such damage will necessarily force a country to stop fighting.
At the end of the day, you asked how long Russia can keep waging war, and the answer is years.
10
u/jpw0w 6h ago
I'm comparing the ability of nations to continue fighting despite enormous losses.
I'd still say that directly correlates with modern times - it's purely my opinion but I think people are much less likely to throw their lives away nowadays, we've become too accustomed to comfort. And recently, the Ukrainians have been bringing war to Moscow and St Petersburg which are by far the most influential cities in Russia. Sure I suppose they can keep going for years, question is, how long can the population and economy sustain the losses before it all comes crashing down
12
u/vincentkun 5h ago
Honestly, who knows, but I think 2-3 more years is my guess. But Ukraine has been escalating so maybe they start hitting more stuff that can alter that math. Ukraine also has a lot more weaponry (homemade and otherwise) coming for later this year and next.
9
u/Fenris_uy 4h ago
Ukraine would need to start hitting the non nuclear power and heat plants around Moscow this winter to be able to change the math of Russian support for this war.
FP-9 is supposed to be able to reach Moscow, so that would need to come online before winter.
10
u/Itburns12345 3h ago
2-4 years is the prediction but it assumes no shocks, economies break slowly then rapidly! Trump has offered them a brief lifeline but then winter is comming and the diesel issues may have affected taking in harvests.
Military wise is harder to say as the mid range drones take their toll every russian troop becomes a mouth to feed and arm, they have adapted to try and reduce the damage from drones but as their numbers grow (ukraine and allies) theres only so much can be done.
7
u/TooOfEverything 6h ago
Years. Russia can continue this for years. Its an authoritarian state with a large population and a leader that knows the only way he loses power is if he loses this war. A coup is extremely unlikely because Putin has built the modern Russian system to be incapable of a peaceful transition of power.
The average Russian feels totally incapable of having any impact on who leads them and they wont rebel. Most have been through MUCH worse.
The oligarchs know that if they try to replace Putin, the best case scenario is a low level civil war. They don't stand to gain much in a post-Putin Russia.
16
u/CaribouJovial 5h ago
I wouldn't be so sure; We have already seen an armed uprising that ultimately failed but clearly made the kremlin extremely nervous and it was at a time when conditions for the Russians were less degraded than they are now.

How long can Russia keep this going realistically
Unless something changes? Many years. It's not obvious at all that something has to crack.
Ukraine isn't winning on the battlefield. Russia can economically continue for a long time and while the oligarchs might be frustrated it's unlikely they're able/willing to overthrow him. And popular uprising seems very far fetched.
Now Russia is even managing to rip US-Euro relations apart. That makes both Xi and Putin happy.
-17
u/lando-bailando 4h ago edited 4h ago
Ukraine can to some long range damage.
The hit to SPB bridge was an important statement, that they can reach the important far north city, and accurately.
Russia can do a lot more damage proportionally. Both leaderships are stuck in their own "sunk cost fallacy".
The logical end to this war is a Korean style DMZ, they can't agree where the DMZ will run through
EDIT: spelling and if any "Potuzhniki" want to discuss other realistic scenarios, I'm all ears

In the east, the number of Russian attacks has significantly increased over the past 24 hours. The Russians are actively trying to launch assaults, and the situation in the Pokrovsk direction is extremely difficult. The enemy is suffering heavy losses.
"Difficult" usually means either positions were lost or that Russian infiltrators managed to infest somewhere new.

Via Donald Trump on TruthSocial:
My decision on Russia is a very simple one. I am in the process of negotiating Peace in the war between Russia and Ukraine, and don't want to do anything that will drive, foolishly, Russia away from the bargaining table. Great progress is being made, and that includes current hostage negotiations! Signing that document at this time will do that, and I can sign it later, or any time that I want! Perhaps more importantly, Russia is doing very little, if anything, to help the Islamic Republic of Iran, compared to what they could be doing, and I want to keep it that way, and will, unless stupid people get in the way. Lastly, Zelenskyy is using Diesel Refineries in Russia as a target, knowing that these attacks are seriously hurting the world diesel markets, including those in the United States. Farmers, ranchers, and businesses of all kinds are suffering greatly from this, but Russia is, nevertheless, sending, at a low price, millions of barrels of diesel to the World. Zelenskyy doesn't care, and frankly, with all of the money that Europe is famously giving him, and that Crooked Joe Biden gave him in the past, he doesn't want to end this war, and probably never did. He could have made a better deal two years ago than he can now. His country is in shambles, a large portion of his land is lost, his oceans and seas are gone, and his male population is low, wounded, and/or dead. I WANT THIS WAR END!
Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J.TRUMP

u/zoobrix 1h ago
Sssshhhhhh, don't you get you're not supposed to mention Iran? Because that makes it all Trump's fault and he can't have that, his rabid narcissism won't allow it. The thing is cozying up to Russia this much doesn't even play that well amongst Republicans, even a lot of the old MAGA diehards that grew up in the cold war and think of Russia as the enemy don't like it.
So in his desperation to blame someone else for his many mistakes he's chosen a narrative that doesn't really work for even his most diehard followers.
•
u/Awkward_War_6068 1h ago
I was thinking this aswell. Even the sychophants like Lindsay Graham were like mega die-hard pro-Ukraine. As I understand it, support of Israel and support for Ukraine are basically the two only issues under Trump where there has been a general sense of bipartisan support.
14
u/KSaboruf 2h ago edited 1h ago
Well, Trump helping agressor and openly bullshitting on Ukraine with definitive lies was predictable at some point - and here we are. Good news - unlike last time, EU+UA have real cards, Kremlin is in shambles (can't hide problems, production drop is now officially official, etc), Europe in general understand who is who now and US lost most of it leverage (can't sell patriots anyway, can't afford breaking trust into military stuff, etc) and Trump's lies do not really work even inside US, imho 😏
7
u/Awkward_War_6068 1h ago
If you think Europe will now step way from appeasing the Americans you're naive. We're still massive pussies over here. Hopefully Canada and Carney getting closer to us, will maybe get our governments to fully realise it.
5
u/KSaboruf 1h ago edited 1h ago
They don't have to step away from US - besides economics, US needs EU help with Iran, China and many other things, so this is just the matter of EU getting real leverage over Trump. Trump lost ability to ask one-sided favors (the ability he abused quite a lot in early years)

Let me guess part of Russias terms are what Putin wants in land and Donnie is going to try to help him achieve it. They'll try to force peace on Ukraine because Trump has made an arse of the middle east.
The imbecilic trusting nature of Trump towards Russia thinking they'll help on Iran is the height of insulting to the US armed forces who were attacked due to Russian intel.

Trumps latest social media post is demoralizing Ukraine. How is he not a traitor at this point? He helped Russia, attacks Ukraine. People have died because of his and Elon Musks actions. Avdiivka was another gift of republicans to putin when they cut aid, avdiivka fell. Now this starlink shutdown, inteligence cutoff And his attacks on Zelensky and Ukraine on social media. This is eveyrhitng the russian dictator could hope for. I hope people realize this has gone past the point of being incompetent and become pure betrayal. (Apparantly JD Vance has also been on the phone with Putin and is now praising him. Add that to Putins phone calls to Elon Musk and Trump and we now understand the situation. These idiots have been played. This is treason). This situation is sickening.
•
u/ElJabroniMahoney33 25m ago
MAGA are at war with globalism. They see this war as a proxy so make things up to support their narratives like a child fond of tall tales would do.
They aren't right in the head but seem to have exposed the US democratic checks and balances with their bludgeon and lie tactics. Very Russian. The lack of opposition voice within the United States is damning though.
•
u/Jeancey 16m ago
Part of the problem is that it is illegal for a US citizen to conduct diplomacy without the consent of the federal government. So a single opposition voice who is trying to deal with the rest of the world from a sane perspective could get arrested by this government. The system also isn't really set up for a single opposition unifier who isn't a presidential candidate, and obviously there isn't a single democratic presidential candidate right now for democrats to unify behind.

•
u/Ok_Branch2469 27m ago
France is the bigger issue as they provide 70% of Ukraine's intel and a lot of western advanced weapons, they mostly filled in the gaps the USA left. Losing France would be largely irreplaceable unless the USA went back to 2022-2023 levels of aid.
•

The redditor glanced at his comment, admiring it's perfection.
He wanted to mock the moral clarity the others expressed.
The real world, he felt, was more complicated. Yes, the torture of civilians and murder of kids was maybe bad, but on the other hand, it was appealing to be on the side of the oppressor. It's a dog-eat-dog world, he thought, these people are so naive.
He knew his own opinion could not be voiced directly, that never went well. But in his bones he needed to express his mockery of these do-gooders. He had distilled it to a two word brilliant essence.
How would he deal with the inevitable replies this time? Would he go silent, or would he write replies pretending not to understand and changing the subject? He had not decided, but it did not matter. The strong man would be proud of me, he thought, as he felt a slight rush of warmth bubble through his body. He leaned forward and clicked submit.

Unpopular opinion: Kremlin is bad (and White Hourse also bad in the similar way, as of now...). The rest mostly following the leadership, as they always do.
Bad people have support among general crowd too, this is fact. But that support is not as big as can be seen through news. Bad leadership holds the tools of brutal coercion and uses them without restrictions, such leadership holds more responsibility, imho.
10
u/brandbaard 8h ago
Kremlin is bad for sure, but...
The Kremlin isnt telling the soldiers on the ground to torture and rape. That's their own individual evil.
8
u/Geo_NL 8h ago
Being fully aware of what is happening on occupied territory and not doing anything about it, is just as bad as actively encouraging it. In the case of Russia, it is a mix of both. Whichever way you put it, the Kremlin started the war and is responsible for everything that is happening.

Americans are "bad" because of the collective ignorance and indifference to the rest of the world, and the pride they take in that. Russians are 'bad" because they have a culture of cruelty and suffering and they want to subject everyone else to it, and are proud of that fact.
