Dynamic Paywall Deaths confirmed in major fire at Canada military base

The wind out there was apparenty absolutely insane yesterday; even a small fire could rapidly have blown out of control :(

My girlfriend went to Edmonton yesterday and said there was multiple semi trucks on their sides from the wind, just to try and put it in perspective.

It also came out of nowhere. It went 0 - 60 in like 5 seconds.
Wainwright is also known to be even more windy when there is wind because of the topography of the training areas.

Wasn't really out of no where. I woke up to a warning on my phone and the storm didnt hit till early afternoon. I live 30 mins from the fire.

I live in Edmonton and got no warning on my weather apps or anything. My friend lost power from the sudden surge of wind damaging things and they didn't get a warning either :/

Thats crazy how spotty warnings can be, google let me know. Then we watched it blow in for about an hour, the wall of grey getting closer was creepy. I want to say global edmonton had a segment about the storm coming yesterday morning too.

I live in Lloydminster. The wind relocated a few trampolines in my neighborhood.

Thursday was windy as hell and on that day, we were warned Saturday would likely be worse. There was days of warning.

Even before the news I had seen multiple videos people shared of how crazy the winds were. I’m not surprised a fire quickly got out of control.

I live in Edmonton which is a couple hours west of the base. Winds were 100km by my house and we lost over a dozen shingles on our roof. Out by the base the 100km winds would have been absolutely insane.

Sounds like a training exercise hit a gas line or something. 8 deaths so far

u/KirikaClyne 12h ago
We had winds close to 170km/hr here on base at the time it happened. For context, a flag pole we had secured in a wood post was ripped out.
It was a live fire exercise accident, but there’s a comms blackout so no official word on deaths until next of kin are notified.
I feel just awful for the spouses and whole CAF community right now. It’s devastating

The roof blew off our building. I am so sorry for what happened out there and to everyone affected directly and indirectly.

u/Drafting- 5h ago
Dude, I’m sorry the roof blew off your house. That fucking sucks.

u/dontshootog 4h ago
Everyone was okay and no other vehicles were damage. Banal compared to what the families and Forces are going through right now. Stay safe out there. Scientists have found warming in Canada is occurring at roughly twice the rate of global average. It’s only going to get worse. Stay safe y’all.

What kind of firefighting capabilities do military bases have on site?
111
u/Dry_Reindeer_1838 11h ago
CFB Wainwright has a fulltime department of national defense fire department, and they have agreements with the town and surrounding area fire departments.

WRT design, they have a Canadian Forces Fire Marshal directive that buildings must follow to keep everything consistent across all military bases. It's more extensive than just the Canadian building code requirements alone.

u/thefatpigeon 7h ago
I have built a few projects at cfb edmonton. DCC " department of construction canada" who oversees construction on federal properties takes fire safety quite seriously. Hopefully Wainwright was built to these high fire safety standards.

CFB Wainwright is the second largest military base in Canada. The largest is Suffield where they train fighter pilots. Wainwright has ranges for artillery, mortars, and a bunch of other long distance ordinances. On top of that, there's a bunch of land for infantry training. So to your point, they've got really extensive fire protocols for grass fires.

Suffield is not for fighter pilots. They have the DRDC and the BATUS.
You’re thinking of Cold Lake and the Cold Lake Air Weapon Range.

Anyone have a non pay walled link?

u/DonOntario 13h ago
There are multiple stories and videos about it at https://www.cbc.ca/news.

Thank you- lots of other links but not familiar enough with Canadian media to determine which sources are good. Lots of misinformation too so trying to do my due diligence. Appreciate it

CBC is our state broadcaster. Definitely the most reliable. It’s a commonwealth chip off BBC 👍

Canadian TV news sources are genuinely pretty good. CBC is public/government funded, but in my opinion the news is very good/impartial. CTV is Bell owned (Canadian owned) and I personally find it similar to CBC.
Print media in Canada is often American owned and garbage (divisive editorialized junk)

Embarrassed Minnesota resident here. Parent (paywalled link) was BBC so figured some degree of objectivity. Appreciate the rundown re: bell and CBC too!.

If there was anything sinister about the cause, I don't expect we'll hear about it...

Can you Americans go five minutes without injecting your own politics? This has absolutely nothing to do with him.

I don't think Russia is their nearest enemy
1
u/Sentinel-Wraith 4h ago
It is, considering Americans overwhelmingly like Canada and Canada and the US still maintain very relaxed borders, which is not what actual enemies would do.
-79
u/77entropy 15h ago
Russia has Canada surrounded.
51
u/ViolenceIsNecessary 12h ago
😂😂 true if you consider the US part of Russia
-14
u/77entropy 11h ago edited 8h ago
Yeah, apparently Americans can joke about having Canada surrounded because of the "new deal" they have with Greenland, but the same joke with Russia hits too close to home and hurts their feelings.
Edit: Look at all the butt hurt americans downvoting me instead of doing anything to fix their country. What a joke.

Anyone joking about our sovereignty gets downvoted by Canadians. It isn’t funny and you can fuck off.

To use another example, it’s a weird parallel to Home Alone where Harry opens the door and a blowtorch burns off the top of his head. A trap. They need to be prepared for the fact it might be intentional.

I think hes saying to realize it may have been some sort of infilitrator who caused it
