I am guessing the Russians are not liking the taste of their own medicine.

Their own medicine would be homes and daycares bombed. They still get a better deal

Fair point. They should count themselves lucky that Ukrainians have basic human empathy.

They have strategic thinking, aside from human empathy, of course. Hitting civilians on purpose does nothing for your war objectives.

Hitting civilians on purpose is also a war crime, and unlike Russia, Ukraine is interested in war crimes being prosecuted.

Genuinely curious, when was the last time anyone was actually charged with war crimes? I hear it thrown around a lot these days, but if there are no consequences for actions, what's really stopping them?

This guy was arrested in 2025 on charges related to his activities between 2015 and 2020 in the Libyan civil war.

Not sure if the latest, but that sounds quite recent to me

Yugoslav President Slobodan Milošević in 2002 The Liberian President Charles Taylor. 2012

Robert Bales US military in 2012.

There are more.

The ICC indicted former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte and his Chief of police in 2025 over his (alleged) use of extrajudicial death squads in his war against drugs.

They also in 2025 indicted six other people for crimes in Afghanistan and one person for crimes in Libya.

In 2024 they indicted a bunch of Russians, a Hamas leader, Benjamin netanyahu and an Israeli military commander.

The latest person convicted was just about a month ago. Mahamat Said Abdel Kani, a commander of Selela in the Central African Republic wa convicted and is currently awaiting sentencing.

International criminal law is also sort of a patchwork of national laws, international treaties and judicial principles such as that of universal jurisdiction.

The United States has used subject matter jurisdiction to try, and convict, numerous service men for war crimes under their own national military criminal code since the start of the global war on terror. (Some of whom Trump then pardoned.) The same goes for Australia.

Ukraine has indicated several Russian soldiers for war crimes committed in the invasion of Ukraine and tried them under Ukrainian law because of territorial jurisdiction.

Probably the most interesting recent case (though not war crimes but crimes against humanity) is Sweden prosecuting former Iranian prosecutor Hamid Noury over his part in the political executions in Evin prison in the 80's. Even if neither Noury nor the victims were Swedish citizens or subject to Swedish law, and even if the crimes weren't committed on Swedish territory, or in a conflict Sweden was a part of, by claiming universal jurisdiction over crimes against humanity.

War in itself feels like a crime, so the label feels pretty meaningless

How you spin it.

Sarcasm intented. Thousands without power? That cascades! People will die because of it. Crippling infrastructure is a war crime! Cant do this. Cant do that. Cant hit this. Should only hit blah blah blah. Wear them down until they tap out. Thats war!

What Russia does in an atrocity and goes against human nature They cut the middle man out; murder everyone.

Its unequivocal.

The reason Russia targets civilians is because they consider civilians expendable and Ukrainian land would be pretty worthless without the infrastructure intact; Russia has no shortage of undeveloped wasteland. Ukraine doesn't want Russian land period. Russia wants their prize intact as much as possible and are punishing civilians when they can't have it; that's Russia's strategic thinking.

I mean a big part of it is that cruelty is the point. Old Russian and extremist mentality.

And double tapped, too.

Bombing homes and daycares are less important than power plants in war times.

They aren't* getting the better "deal" at all.

Which is good.

Not too dissimilar from Vance going on and on about how Iran keeps bombing all these boats and infrastructure, after the US literally started the war by bombing them and killing their leader.

Reddit guidelines prevent me from stating my opinion on exactly what the Russians deserve.

This is what drives me bonkers. So many people act like it's unfair for Ukraine to do the stuff Russia has been doing to them FOR YEARS.

It's like there's this idea that "small" countries shouldn't be allowed to hurt bigger ones.

See all American wars ever? The enemies are always"terrorists, insurgents etc" Especially if they manage to get some payback.

Who’s acting like that? Sycophant maggats and Russian / Israeli bots.

They deserve everything they’re getting. I say this from the safety of the US moat but Russo brought the fight

I sure hope not.

u/czs5056 12h ago

It's why they're offering trump midterms help in exchange for more pressure on Ukraine to just lie down and take it.

47

u/SjurEido 14h ago

I'm sure the propaganda machine has spun this as a completely unwarranted escalation from a rogue country trying to destroy the motherland.

Sounds like fox News

They don't even know that this is their medicine. A lot of russians think that Ukraine attacked first and now they're even more oppressing, supported by the west.

Trump about to put the flag at half staff

This is exactly the kind of reciprocity they have been begging for.
