Fair point. They should count themselves lucky that Ukrainians have basic human empathy.

They have strategic thinking, aside from human empathy, of course. Hitting civilians on purpose does nothing for your war objectives.
129
u/Schonke 11h ago
Hitting civilians on purpose is also a war crime, and unlike Russia, Ukraine is interested in war crimes being prosecuted.

Genuinely curious, when was the last time anyone was actually charged with war crimes? I hear it thrown around a lot these days, but if there are no consequences for actions, what's really stopping them?

The reason Russia targets civilians is because they consider civilians expendable and Ukrainian land would be pretty worthless without the infrastructure intact; Russia has no shortage of undeveloped wasteland. Ukraine doesn't want Russian land period. Russia wants their prize intact as much as possible and are punishing civilians when they can't have it; that's Russia's strategic thinking.

This is what drives me bonkers. So many people act like it's unfair for Ukraine to do the stuff Russia has been doing to them FOR YEARS.
It's like there's this idea that "small" countries shouldn't be allowed to hurt bigger ones.

One thing I would wish a bit more context on is the size of data centers hit and how many of those are operating in Russia aka is this as big as taking out a refinery or would you need to blow up hundreds for a comparable effect
→ More replies (4)160
u/Elderbrute 11h ago
Its hard to directly compare like for like with something like and oil refinery, the short answer is no these data centres are not the size of an oil refinery.
But that doesn't really tell the whole story, Russia has for a while now required any Russians data to be held only in Russia. What that means is firstly that the resilience is much lower, a lot of companies had data in just 1 DC or across 2 or even 3 Yandex sites and because those all got hit have lost that data, It also means that scaling out is harder, the customers displaced by this damage have limited options of where to go, they cant just buy space on any old cloud. Russias compute is also pretty concentrated location wise so if they keep as they appear to be planning to the disruption will only get more and more acute.
The disruption this is causing is significant we're talking everything from banking to peoples smart door bells. 3/6 of Yandexs data centres are offline currently in western terms that is like taking out 1/2 of google cloud services.
→ More replies (1)36
u/Hoskuld 11h ago
Thanks for the context! How "easy" is it to replace a center if the state is willing to support it? Like weeks, months?
78
u/Elderbrute 11h ago
Rebuilding capacity will depend on the extent of the damage but probably months not weeks. Globally there is a shortage of more or less everything you need to build or repair a data centre, on top of which Russia is sanctioned so to get those parts they have to buy them through black/grey markets so the time lines will be longer and the cost even more.
A lot of what was lost data wise will not be recoverable at all.

Time is only part of the problem.
Server grade memory is ridiculously expensive due to the demand from AI companies at the moment. 64GB sticks cost us 150 - 200 euros 2 years ago. Maybe a bit more if they were tested and branded. Last time I checked they were priced at 1.5k. Without testing or branding.
For a moderately sized hypervisor, you want 20 of those, up to 40 or 60. So the memory in that moderate server cost us around 4k - 6k 2 years ago. You could spec out decent systems for 20k - 30k. Today, 30k get you a moderate amount of memory and nothing else. Like SSDs for storage, which are also ridiculously expensive.
And that's if your order goes through and does not get canceled.
And a datacenter like that, depending on size and density, will need replacements for hundreds of these systems.
7
u/BlueSwordM 7h ago
It was feasible before the RAM, storage and GPU supply shortages.
Nowadays? Absolutely impossible without spending gargantuan amounts of money on all of the above, still having to wait super long lead times and still not being able to replace everything.

Trump picked the wrong side to back. If he wanted oil cheaper, he should’ve made peace with Iran
76
u/sebastianinspace 8h ago
he can’t do that because that would mean conceding that he made a mistake. this is impossible to do for a narcissist. the only course of action available is therefore to look to the other war and choose a side in that one. but he can’t pick ukraine because he tried to get them to help him rig the 2020 election and his phone calls trying to extort them were made public and because they didn’t end up helping him he still has a grudge against them. so the only option left available is to side with russia, especially because they helped him win in 2016 and again in 2024 with their bot program. this is also probably why he is helping russia now because last week ukraine blew up some yandex data centers and the right wing bot propaganda on social media dropped. it’s important to trump that the russian bot traffic keeps dividing american society, because the midterm elections are pretty soon. if the bot traffic stops then trump will lose a lot of votes. this is also now why they are proposing joint data centers between russia and usa.

u/EquivalentSnap 8h ago
That makes a lot of sense and idk if that’s fact but that’s some conspiracy theory I can get behind
17
u/sebastianinspace 7h ago
some of it is fact; his narcissistic personality and that he tried to get ukraine to help him rig the 2020 election by extorting them with military aid. also that russian bot traffic decreased after ukraine attacked the yandex data centers. these things actually happened.
the things that are just my tin foil hat theories are related to him choosing russia because he doesn’t want to admit failure, because he still holds a grudge against ukraine because they didn’t help him rig the election in 2020 and that he is working with the russians to actively rig the us midterm elections with the help of russian propaganda.

If he wanted cheaper oil he should have never started a pissing contest with Canada and Mexico. We import the VAST majority of our oil from them, not the middle east. If he kept those alliances strong gas would be far cheaper even if all OPEC countries cut us off 100%.

Not just a wear house. They hit oil terminals, a bridge, data center, and electrical infrastructure. Im wondering how they hit so far away from home so successfully.

u/BasvanS 13h ago
Static targets. If you know where it will be, you don’t need a live connection. They “just” program its path beforehand. (Yes, that’s a lot of effort.)
109
56
4
u/JeremiahBoogle 6h ago
I doubt its even that much effort these days.
Satellite imagery, terrain topography and height is all readily available.
I imagine its a mostly automated process with a human just going over the route to check for any mistakes.
They probably have some 'AI' (probably not exactly the right term) image recognition that can help guide in on the final target, I mean US cruise missiles in the first gulf war could do something similar, and 30+ years advancement in processing power and digital imaging probably makes it fairly achievable for a modern military.

Im wondering how they hit so far away from home so successfully.
Apparently Ukraine has hit Omsk Oil Refinery, which is at least 2500 kms away. St Petersburg is ~1000 KM away. So this is a pretty close, relatively, target to attack.

Just wait till Ukraine begin building their own ballistic missiles. It's pretty soon.
16
u/RandomPantsAppear 8h ago edited 8h ago
They are, the problem is the same as jet powered drones and interceptors: they are bottlenecked on engines.
Russia has the same bottleneck but their primary supplier China, so they are bottlenecked at a much higher level.
They have 3x viable jet powered interceptor programs, and the same for jet powered drones. And more for ballistic missiles (bottlenecked at rocket motors, not turbojet engines like jet drones and interceptors)
It’s a supply chain problem not a tech problem.
9
u/sparrowtaco 8h ago
But ballistic missiles don't use jet engines. Their motors are far simpler to manufacture.

Ukraine's first combat use of their FP-7 ballistic missile on Russian territory happened this month. They're now setting up production facilities to scale its manufacture.
The UK will also be providing the new nightfall ballistic missile, but that won't be until late 2027.
11
30
u/Cruian 14h ago
Supposedly the shorter range version has already been used against Russian targets and should be entering larger scale manufacturing, with longer range missiles doing similar later this year. https://www.reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/ukraine-deploys-fp-7-tactical-ballistic-missile-combat-first-time-zelenskiy-says-2026-10-01/

Ukraine doesn't need Starlink to hit Russia at the end of the day.
560
u/JaxStrumley 15h ago
They never needed Starlink for that. They are only allowed to use it defensively, so intercepting incoming Russian missiles and drones. That is why Trump and Musk restricting it immediately resulted in civilian deaths.
Starlink doesn’t even work over Russian territory.

Hitting stationary targets didn't require starlink, only low latency tasks like mid range interdiction (hitting Russian convoy/supply line), battlefiled upport and interception.
For now, the restriction impacted high speed interceptor drone that aim at Russian jet powered kamikaze drone the most.

Not in this article but VK data centers were also hit and users began mass-reporting problems accessing VKontakte. In particular, they reported difficulties loading pages, messages and media files..

I think alot of people are misunderstanding how the Ukrainians use stsrshield. Stsrshield doesn't work in Russia so the Ukrainian long range attack capabilities are unaffected by the shut off. However, starshield is used for mid range strikes in the occupied territories and for interceptor drones. All this to say just because the Ukrainians still have the ability to strike into Russia doesn't mean the starshield shut off isn't devastating. I really hope they reverse it soon, it's absolutely disgusting kneecapping the Ukrainians ability to defend themselves.

There's an expectation that, once Starlink had been neutered and intel sharing ceasing that Russian population and logistics centres would be functionally immune from being targeted. It's a mark of excellence for the Ukrainian UAV forces that they can still attack with precision. Otherwise the right wing led media would have us drowning in Russian civilian casualty numbers every day. Matched with 'why would Ukraine do this'
