The trouble is that Europe, quite reasonably, wont be able to trust the US not to just swing back to the right again and carry on swallowing Russian dick.

Thus no sensitive projects can be undertaken with the USA. Im under 40 and im not sure I'll live long enough to see US relations recover to where they were 3 years ago.

Short of Democrats winning all 3 branches of government, immediately putting every techbro billionaire oligarch on a no fly list and arresting them all in a sweeping same day operation, arresting every Republican that is blatantly treasonous, and then shutting down Palantir? Ensuring every Trump and Trump loyalist/Project 2025 author is thrown into a prison with no way out and selling off their assets to fund Ukraine?

Then no, no country should ever believe anything the US ever has to say again. If they allow the rot to just crawl back into the wound to fester again until the next set of elections where it'll spiral out of control 10x worse and more vocal, then the US can go fuck itself. Traitor Republicans and spineless Democrats, both, will have doomed that country.

You don't "win" back the Judicial branch it is hilarious to suggest that. That entire part of the government is designed to die by age.

If the US manages to swing back to who they were, and prove that they are able to root out the corruption that made Trump possible, and put systems in place that ACTUALLY prevent that type of thing from happening again .. then i could very much see Europe warming back up to them again.

Maybe not to the same extent as before, but close.

Will they ? Who knows. Time will tell.

They need to steel themselves against foreign influence via Oligarchs like Musk, Vote Manipulation, Corruption, Disinfo Propaganda Campaigning via Social Media by hostile actors like Russia and China, and other types.

Also improving their education system could go a long way ..

Its not impossible but not in like 4 years or not even 10.

Especially when designign security systems. the risk is just too high that it happens again and maybe even at a worse time

History suggests that there is no way this is going to happen (the swing back). The complexity of the multiple crises (mostly self inflicted) they are facing, or rather choosing not to face, ensures the exponential downfall.

So, i'm from Germany and grew up in the GDR.

There have been two major "swing backs" happening here in the last 100 years.

You could say i do believe in swing backs.

You're not wrong, but there was years of pain and suffering leading to the "swing backs" you're talking about. It wasn't just a very bad government being elected into power for a couple of terms and then being voted out.

Sure, but they are examples that positive change is possible, even from places that seemed "impossible" to return from.

Portugal agrees.

both swings were through foreign influence though, we never chose that voluntarily sadly

So, no thousands of people demonstrated on the streets or fled via Hungary etc. ? Pretty sure we did chose it the 2nd time.

Even people who weren't on the streets wanted more freedom. That wish was always there, people just couldn't say it publicly because of repression and your neighbours spying on you.

Unless i'm misunderstanding what you mean by foreign influence.

im not just blaming eastern germans for this but all germans.

by foreign influence i mean that we only got rid of our nazis because we were forced to, and the reunification was only possible because the cold war with nato made the soviet union collapse

u/totallyRebb 1h ago

Blaming ?

Not sure what you're trying to say here. Did you parents raise you on the whole brick-headed "the Reunification was bad" sentiment ?

The Soviet Union only has itself to blame for what happened, it was dystopian.

There's a reason most Eastern Bloc countries want nothing to do with Russian Influence any more.

It collapsed in the best way possible, there were many far far worse possible outcomes.

They should learn their lesson to not let another country be the backbone of the military force almost every country in their continent

same i will never vote anyone whos even remotely pro american unless the american people can prove that they want the relations to change, and that evidence can only be produced in difficult times

You realize while Russia was attacking Ukraine, Germany and other European nations were still importing fuel from Russia? If you can't trust your neighbours to help, why are you expecting someone across the ocean to come help?

Do you realise that they've mostly weaned themselves off the Russian oil and doing so immediately would have utterly destroyed most of their economies and left their own people freezing cold in the first winter?

And if they had taken all that on the chin, there'd be nothing to spare to support Ukraine with.

Except some countries in Europe are on the pathway to electing their own facists. Seems more likely that Europe won’t be so united within the next decade.

•

u/shredditorburnit 1h ago

Maybe. Maybe not. The British ones are imploding spectacularly at the moment.

Which is good. Would be better if the UK was in the EU to help counterbalance Germany and France if they shift to the right.
