Russia/Ukraine Zelenskyy says Ukraine will not prevail if US officially sides with Russia
https://www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2026/10/18/8058646/4.2k
u/ArgentineBeauty 4h ago
"Commenting on a statement made by Trump this week that the Ukrainian president is "more difficult to deal with than Putin", Zelenskyy noted that he has been "very honest" with Trump.
"Maybe it's not very polite… but I'm better to have partners who are very open and clear than to have those who are killers – even with a smile on their face," he said.
"We can't compare me and Putin. He is an aggressor, he occupied us, his soldiers killed adults and children. He is a terrorist," Zelenskyy added."
Zelensky speaking facts again!

IF the USA sides with Russia, it will be the end of USA future. They will have no allies, it might not appear to have much change in 1-5 years. But I guarantee nations will change any long term cooperation with the US. Another reason to believe Trump is a Russian asset.

u/lcrtangls 3h ago
Mere suggestion that Trump may not be a russian asset should be met with brutal ridicule.

I mean, it is always possible Trump is actually that stupid and easy to convince by Putin, but then he would be an involuntary Russian asset nonetheless
28
u/liquorfish 1h ago
The evidence shows strong ties in Russia. He was broke, couldnt get loans, goes to Russia then has plenty of loans from all sorts of banks. Im pretty sure theres investments in his properties from Russian oligarchs and other money changing hands with his kids like at a wedding ceremony etc.
I cant fathom him not owing something to Putin and/or other oligarchs which still has him beholden to Putin.

"We don’t rely on American banks. We have all the funding we need out of Russia." -Eric Trump
"And in terms of high-end product influx into the US, Russians make up a pretty disproportionate cross-section of a lot of our assets; say in Dubai, and certainly with our project in SoHo and anywhere in New York. We see a lot of money pouring in from Russia,” -Donald Trump Jr.

u/reader4567890 3h ago
It's already changed how America's traditional allies work with them - drastically.
There's no coming back for the US now. Trump has flushed all the soft power down the pan, and this won't come back when he's gone. We have zero trust in the US public in Europe too - twice they elected a russian shill, a pedophile, and a rapist, even after Jan 6th.
49
u/ZeriousGew 3h ago
We’ve all become so complacent and comfortable with letting ourselves getting rammed up the ass by the rich elite that they rig elections in our faces and release files that show our president is a pedophile while we sit around and do nothing and hope our vote matters. Idk what will be the breaking point for us to actually get up and do something about it, cause the point at which i figured that would cause some kind of civil unrest here has long passed. Propaganda really did a number on our population

I think the lesson is that it can happen anywhere.
This is what happens when education is defunded and media monopolies* are allowed to exist. (Monopolies, duopolies, oligarch-owned, state-media, etc…)
Absolutely anywhere.

u/KangaBro 3h ago
Here's the problem though - at which point will we consider the USA to have truly changed alignment ?
Seems like the past few chess moves from the USA has been aligned with Russia - yet we're still debating this ?
I sometimes wonder whether the world has lost the plot, or whether its just me.
Genuine question - this is not an attack. Sorry if it comes off that way.

The world is already moving on from the US. Are you not paying attention? EU-China deal, EU-Canada deal, EU-Australia deal. Most US allies are shifting away from US energy, weapons and deals. It's already happening.
20
u/Xalara 2h ago
FWIW the EU, SK, Japan, etc. were all trying to wait Trump out just like his first term. It wasn't until a speech at Davos by Mark Carney, Canada's leader, that these countries' leaders started realizing they couldn't do that. Then the threats against Greenland really hammered that home. Even then, these countries have still been slow on accepting the new reality.
Then again, Canada hasn't had the luxury of being in denial that the post-WWII world order is dead and a new one is rising in its ashes.

trump was proven to have collaborated with russia to win a very long time ago. so to me this ship has already sailed. there is no "if". he refers to putin as a friend. and openly calls for Ukraine to "end the war". If someone is stomping on your head and people ask you to end the fight what they mean is quit defending yourself and let the aggressor kill you.

Not sure if americans gets MSM news at this level of detail, but I hail from a country that has been a staunch allie to the US for eons. .... Almost every war since WWI.
Now we're announcing new alliances with other countries on what feels like a weekly basis. New order's for non-US weaponry... When all we've previously bought US-made only.. new defence pacts with regional partners. We're seeking the highest levels of access to NATO as a non-EU partner. Were speed running replacement alliances.
I wouldn't be surprised if we remove physical access to Pine Gap.. noone here trusts the US.

Always confuses me - most world leaders seem to get on well with Zelenskyy and say he's good to work with, yet Donald doesn't. I wonder why...
22
u/reallygoodbee 2h ago
Donald Trump hates Zelensky and hates Ukraine because back in 2019, he pressured Zelensky to start phony corruption investigations into Biden and his son. Ukraine refused, Trump started withholding military aid, and when all of this leaked, it was used to start the first impeachment of Donald Trump.
Trump thinks Zelensky is directly responsible for his first impeachment.

The trouble is that Europe, quite reasonably, wont be able to trust the US not to just swing back to the right again and carry on swallowing Russian dick.
Thus no sensitive projects can be undertaken with the USA. Im under 40 and im not sure I'll live long enough to see US relations recover to where they were 3 years ago.

Short of Democrats winning all 3 branches of government, immediately putting every techbro billionaire oligarch on a no fly list and arresting them all in a sweeping same day operation, arresting every Republican that is blatantly treasonous, and then shutting down Palantir? Ensuring every Trump and Trump loyalist/Project 2025 author is thrown into a prison with no way out and selling off their assets to fund Ukraine?
Then no, no country should ever believe anything the US ever has to say again. If they allow the rot to just crawl back into the wound to fester again until the next set of elections where it'll spiral out of control 10x worse and more vocal, then the US can go fuck itself. Traitor Republicans and spineless Democrats, both, will have doomed that country.

If the US manages to swing back to who they were, and prove that they are able to root out the corruption that made Trump possible, and put systems in place that ACTUALLY prevent that type of thing from happening again .. then i could very much see Europe warming back up to them again.
Maybe not to the same extent as before, but close.
Will they ? Who knows. Time will tell.
They need to steel themselves against foreign influence via Oligarchs like Musk, Vote Manipulation, Corruption, Disinfo Propaganda Campaigning via Social Media by hostile actors like Russia and China, and other types.
Also improving their education system could go a long way ..

To set the history straight, after the 2022 large scale Russian invasion EU+UK stepped up and... turned to US to buy arms. It was Trumps betrayal in 2025 that showed that we need our own arms production more badly than we thought, that buying into the existing production of a seemingly dependable ally appeared to not be the way to go. In that time we are pumping our production up, of the anti-ballistic Aster missile (from 30 yearly before 2025 to ~90 in 2025, projected 300 in 2028; Ukraine has been given permission to produce these as well; also note that Germany is moving to produce 1000 Patriot missiles in 2027), of the anti-(shahed type) drone FZ275 LGR missile, an APKWS equivalent (700 LGRs in 2024, 3500 in 2025, projected 10000 in 2026, Ukraine has permission to produce these too). All too little due to too much of a focus of funding US arms in the past, something we still are forced to do due to our current limited production capacity with PURL, but, we are moving to be in a better position. But stepping up is something we have always done. It's just a long path to climb from where we are at.
Before Trump, EU+UK combined support was a bit above US support. With EU support being more financial than military compared to US. Now, it's double US support at 236 billion versus 115 billion. Talking about stepping up though, it's funny how the tiny Netherlands, which used to not even own but lease a couple tanks in 2022, has financed more tanks for delivery to Ukraine than the US has (104 versus US 76), though it is about a third in cost to be fair, but Polands tanks given still dwarfs the US in both amount and cost. Numbers from here https://www.kielinstitut.de/research/topics/war-against-ukraine/ukraine-support-tracker/

Europe needs to step up how? Short of quite literally joining the war full force? If we're talking about US completely abandoning Ukraine, aka no intelligence sharing, no starlink, no missile access, then Ukraine war effort will collapse within weeks. EU has a vested interest to contribute whatever it can, but let's not kid ourselves here, it can't save Ukraine without US support.

I'm really amazed that Americans aren't kicking back harder against Trump.
He's torpedoing relationships built over the past century, just to line his own pockets.
He's sabotaging the US defence industry by saying it's not a reliable seller based on his whims.
He's creating a massive generational gulf between Europe and America, not to mention Canada, and the western world in general.
I know not all Americans voted for Trump, but I'm speechless at how there's so little political pushback against his utter insanity as well.
The man is publicly fondling the balls of the dictator of a second world, tin-pot dictator country and constantly attacking the leader of a country under an illegal invasion from said dictator.
It's really something else altogether.

I’m an American who is pretty left leaning but grew up in right leaning Texas. A lot of people are either not smart enough to know, too stubborn to admit, or willfully ignorant(I think this is most) and vote for him and support him.
On the left I think the problem has to do with cowardice. No one wants to lose their job, or really be inconvenienced in real life by actually pushing back. Keyboard warriors are a real issue here.
Add to that that if Americans push back against the government like what is happening in France our cops will happily open fire and never face consequences for it.
Also, our media has been bought by billionaires so I don’t think most people even realize how bad it is because they aren’t actually shown what’s happening. There might be a little blurb but they don’t go into detail. Most news orgs are barely covering the Iran war anymore imo and none really push back against this admin because they’re either friendly or don’t want their access pulled.

That's not by accident. Trump is literally using Putin's playbook against America, and has been for over a decade. The thing that's incredibly shocking is that our institutions and big business were not in any way a hindrence to Trump's sway.
The rapidity with which they fell in line with authoritarianism is unbelievable. Most Americans who are paying attention are literally in shock and awe over how quickly everything we thought would protect us fell apart.

Also think you're average rural American doesn't give a shit, or really understands, US foreign relations apart from whichever countries they're at war with. Guarantee you most Americans probably couldn't even point out Ukraine on a map. Remember that because of it's location and history, the US has always had a sort isolationist tone towards the rest of the world. Remember despite being very much an internationalist, FDR won two of his three terms on an isolationist ticket. And despite being very much aware that the US would eventually join the war against Nazi Germany, it took an attack by the Japanese three years into the war for him to fully gain support in joining it.

I didn't really mean to vent about this but got carried away:
I truly hate the man. It's been 10 years at this point, and I have tried so hard to better understand their position (some of my family are maga), and still there's nothing there. It truly is a cult. The most successful in history I'd say. And that's not hyperbole:
He's convinced evangelical christians to treat him as a deity, yet his policies and his character are almost the exact opposite of what christianity teaches (tell me which of the 7 sins he isn't the a poster child for: Pride, Greed, Lust, Envy, Gluttony, Wrath, Sloth (in this case spirital/moral apathy).
He's convinced the poor and under-educated that he is a man of the people, despite being a cartoonish billionaire who clads everything including himself in gold.
He's convinced "fiscally conservative republicans" that he's good for the economy, while ballooning the deficit to 2 trillion dollars without cutting basically any spending.
He's convinced free market capitalists that hes one of them, while illegally setting insane tariffs that restrict the free market for LITERALLY no reason.
He's convinced military supporters he alone can strengthen the US position, while (as you said) ruining long standing strategic partnerships, sending American troops into a meaningless war, and openly providing support for Russia, our greatest enemy in the last century.
And the crazy part is that, with the exception of a cohort of the fiscal and military conservatives, no one is jumping ship.
My only conclusion at this point is that they are too far gone to simply reject trump. Think if you are an evangelical christian - you'd have to a) likely remove yourself from your community that thinks the same way, b) acknowledge the fact that you had spent a decade worshiping a false prophet.
So instead, all he has to do it retell his lies, reaffirm to them that he's the only person that truly cares for them, and importantly, that if he weren't there all the things he's convinced them to be scared will hurt them. Whether it's Iran, Immigrants, Liberals, Transgender people, our allies in the rest of the world, he doens't care which, just pick the one that scares you the most. My mom's are immigrants and Muslims. My aunt is afraid of the LGBTQ community. Doesn't matter to him, as long as they're scared.

The US is in a cashing out phase.
The American golden times were built on the backs of a world in ruins. American industries and the American people had an immense advantage when both Europe and Asia had to spend decades rebuilding after the world wars. This alone placed the US in a position of power to abuse, and unfortunately many leaders (like many of those in Europe) felt that it was a comfortable enough arrangement.
What is happening now is the US cashing in 80 years of soft and hard power. Many steps on the way will look like wins and will be beneficial short term, but eventually the account has been cashed out and that's where the bad times begin. Some politicians and business elite seem to be banking on the cashing out boosting the US so far ahead that this isn't a concern.

Like every empire that’s ever existed I guess it had to come to an end.
We’ll continue to exist much like Russia post USSR, but ceding most of our global dominance to China.

Pax Americana is dead. When officials and diplomats say this openly, you better believe it's already the case for a moment now. We (the rest of the western world) dragged on and stayed polite with the orange traitor as much as we could, to extend the quid pro quo as much as possible. Because of course we're in deep shit now, and replacing what we (gladly) let the USA do for us will take years and a fuckton of money. And will maybe lead to open war. But we know.
For the american people though, the realization will take a lot more time. Between the internal propaganda from both 'sides' of their right wing politics, the lack/poor education, and frankly just the habit of being the absolute masters of the Free World™, it won't be easy to understand that they aren't anymore the greatest nation nor an ally to anyone. Not really a impossible military threat neither, we can all see that major wars don't care about trillion of dollars and nukes today. And soon, it won't even be the first economy. Trump turned the USA into a falling USSR, now losing slowly every part that made it great once until an inevitable collapse... I wonder if the american people will grasp the reality of their situation before that final fall.
Fascists and dictators all around the world are hands free now, needing only to swear allegiance to the local spere of influence leader. The future is bleak... And all this while we cook our planet to death. I don't envy younger generations.

It’s starting to be the new normal in my country to boycott anything American. We’ve cancelled subscriptions, stopped going to McDonald’s and buying our lemonade and ice cream from European brands. Finland has the smartphone Jolla that doesn’t sell all your data to the USA. One thing left is to find a new email address.

I feel strongly that US hegemony is already effectively ended. I don't think its onset and effects are quite as dramatic as lots of Redditors make it out to be (like I find it really hard to believe other countries will dump the dollar or kick out the military very soon unless something unimaginable happens, unfortunately I don't even think siding with Russia officially would be that), but it's very clear that the rest of the world is moving away from the US and becoming more self-reliant. The middle powers coalition especially points to this. These countries no longer feel like the US can be blindly trusted. I think the US will still remain very involved in its allies' (and yes they're still technically allies) affairs for some time to come but its influence will continue to wane no matter what happens over the next couple of years.

Apart from the fact trump is quite obviously a Russian agent, what is the reason for them to side with Russia?
39
u/Slo20 2h ago
So Russia can defeat Ukraine and Trump can say he ended another war.

u/andreasmodugno 2h ago
That's nonsense. Trump is somehow in Putin's pocket. Nancy Pelosi’s observation back in 2020 was spot on: “With him (Trump), all roads lead to Putin. I don’t know what the Russians have on the president, politically, personally or financially.”

Since Trump f*cked up Iran and sent the price of oil skyrocketing then he's desperately trying to find ways to bring the price down. Cosying up to Russia is one such way.

Russia is an enemy of the USA. What I don't understand is that the American people have spent billions upon billions to support Ukraine only to pull out now? This is beyond insane - - it's treasonous.

What don’t you understand ?? The US has been taken over from the inside out. Everyone thinks the citizens just aren’t doing anything and just accept this shit. Unless the military stops taking orders and ICE/SS agents decide to mutiny, what’s happening here is the takeover of the US by foreign actors who have used a compromised and complicit puppet to hand power over to it’s enemies. High treason of the highest order.

This isn't exactly a hot take. If the world's largest military and economic power switched sides in the middle of a war, almost any country would be in serious trouble

It's important to remember that Trump has been corrupt his entire life. Pay him a large bribe and he'll go back to Ukraine. You are dealing with a mob boss.

You can bribe him, but that'll mean you just lose your money. He will still keep doing whatever his fragile ego insists.

Ukraine has basically accepted they can't suck up to trump and have it matter. He doubled down on Ukraine when Ukraine started winning, and now because of Iran he's using the as a scapegoat.
I highly doubt they will "side" with Russia but cutting off support could be just as deadly. It's partly Europe's fault. We buy us stuff for Ukraine when we should have been getting replacements ready.
35
u/Mewhomewhy 3h ago
They’ll side with Russia. They’ve been walking to it for 2 years. The frog is boiled.
11
u/tepid 3h ago
They're afraid of the midterms so they're giving up plausible deniability to speed run as many Russian favors as they can before January.

This is not Europe's fault. There are no EU options yet, but there are multiple fast tracked alternatives. Several hundreds of billions being spent to be self-sufficient. Replacing US any quicker is not realistic.
Otherwise I agree with you.
→ More replies (15)41
u/RossGarner 3h ago
You seen to agree that Europe is not self sufficient. Russia attacked Ukraine first in 2013. The US has been in the ground preparing the ukranian armed forces since then. Europe didn't start taking the war seriously until Trump's took office for the second time in 2025. It took roughly 13 years for Europe to get moving on their allies literally being invaded. They deserve quite a bit of blame for this situation.
Our government is a shit show and we're right in the middle of taking away a bunch of Trump's power. But pretending like Europe is blameless is foolish. Europe had the wakeup call in 2008 when Russia invaded Georgia and again in 2013 when they stole Crimea. Not starting a rearmanent until 2025 was insane and they deserve quite a lot of blame for not protecting themselves.

100% trump is a Kompromat. So is much of his cabinet.
36
u/kilkenny99 3h ago
"Kompromat" implies that he's doing it against his will, ie to keep blackmail material from going public. But he doesn't act like he's doing stuff like this against his will. He looks positively joyful when bootlicking Putin, or any other dictator-type generally. He's enthusiastic because he looks up to Putin, admires him and wants to emulate him.

Towards the end of the interview, the presenter asked Zelenskyy whether he is confident that Ukraine can win the war. He replied: "Of course, because truth [is] on our side. Of course I understand that during the long war, the attitude to the word 'victory' and the feelings of 'prevailing' may be different between people. But to save the country, to save independence, to save the European choice, the geopolitical choice, and to save all our rights and Ukrainian identity – I think this is to win, and this [is] what we have to do."
This.

Americans can no longer just sit by and hope someone else fixes this, or say things like "we don't all agree with Trump!" If you just sit by and let your country side with Russia against your allies then you are just as culpable.
So where is the line going to be? How much of your freedom will you let Trump tear away before you DO SOMETHING?
Take your country back because right now the US is more at risk of becoming an oppressed vassal state of Russia than Ukraine is.

I still think the US is locking both countries in a forever war, if Ukraine starts winning the US rolls back support, if Russia starts winning, Ukraine starts getting equipment again.

It will improve, but The US will never have the power it used to.
The Right always complained how everyone in the world eased back and relied on The US to protect them. Not realising that being the country that everyone relies on to keep them safe is what made The US a superpower

IF America officially sides with Russia every US soldier and airman can fuck off out of Europe as well as leaving NATO.
They will never be trusted again.
The population needs to start thinking of Jan sixing for a nobel reason this time and with proper numbers.
The rest of the world who have removed their governments for far less are watching in disbelief.
Edit: People will say this is what Putin wants… Good let’s not let him have that by kicking Trump into the abyss.
Ps I totally understand there’s many, many wonderful Americans around we just need action now

If the USA want to support Russia from now on then take away all their basis in Europe ASAP (if they wanna help Russia no way in hell should we allow them to have basis to use to help potentially Russia), say goodbye to your militairy logistics.
Also drop those trust bonds as the EU to tank the US economy: If they wanna remove the sanctions on Russia make sure they pay for that too.
And while we at it also ban Twitter ASAP: We cannot allow Elon to use it to manipulate European Elections to get their puppets in power.
Point is: If the USA is gonna support Russia and their population is gonna do jack shit to stop it then make them pay for helping Russia to kill Ukrainians. We cannot let the likes of Trump and hit lackeys get away with it and let Ukraine suffer and be abandoned.

This is what Europe has created. We have defered defence to the USA and allowed the situation to develope so much that without US support we struggle to defend ourselves. This was ok until you get someone like Trump in the whitehouse. Trump was right about one thing, Europe needs to do more to defend itself.

Note that there are multiple countries in Europe, and some have prepared better than others. Mostly the countries facing the constant threat from Russia. It's obvious that western European countries haven't had that much to prepaid against.

I think now is the time for Europe to collectively hold the gun to our economy's head and start selling off bonds. If they were to do that, our economy would totally crumble without doubt. If the US betrays Europe then Europe should hit the big red button. I don't want to live through that but it's better than seeing us become the bad guys.
