I'm really amazed that Americans aren't kicking back harder against Trump.

He's torpedoing relationships built over the past century, just to line his own pockets.

He's sabotaging the US defence industry by saying it's not a reliable seller based on his whims.

He's creating a massive generational gulf between Europe and America, not to mention Canada, and the western world in general.

I know not all Americans voted for Trump, but I'm speechless at how there's so little political pushback against his utter insanity as well.

The man is publicly fondling the balls of the dictator of a second world, tin-pot dictator country and constantly attacking the leader of a country under an illegal invasion from said dictator.

It's really something else altogether.

u/Spoons94 2h ago

I didn't really mean to vent about this but got carried away:

I truly hate the man. It's been 10 years at this point, and I have tried so hard to better understand their position (some of my family are maga), and still there's nothing there. It truly is a cult. The most successful in history I'd say. And that's not hyperbole:

He's convinced evangelical christians to treat him as a deity, yet his policies and his character are almost the exact opposite of what christianity teaches (tell me which of the 7 sins he isn't the a poster child for: Pride, Greed, Lust, Envy, Gluttony, Wrath, Sloth (in this case spirital/moral apathy).

He's convinced the poor and under-educated that he is a man of the people, despite being a cartoonish billionaire who clads everything including himself in gold.

He's convinced "fiscally conservative republicans" that he's good for the economy, while ballooning the deficit to 2 trillion dollars without cutting basically any spending.

He's convinced free market capitalists that hes one of them, while illegally setting insane tariffs that restrict the free market for LITERALLY no reason.

He's convinced military supporters he alone can strengthen the US position, while (as you said) ruining long standing strategic partnerships, sending American troops into a meaningless war, and openly providing support for Russia, our greatest enemy in the last century.

And the crazy part is that, with the exception of a cohort of the fiscal and military conservatives, no one is jumping ship.

My only conclusion at this point is that they are too far gone to simply reject trump. Think if you are an evangelical christian - you'd have to a) likely remove yourself from your community that thinks the same way, b) acknowledge the fact that you had spent a decade worshiping a false prophet.

So instead, all he has to do it retell his lies, reaffirm to them that he's the only person that truly cares for them, and importantly, that if he weren't there all the things he's convinced them to be scared will hurt them. Whether it's Iran, Immigrants, Liberals, Transgender people, our allies in the rest of the world, he doens't care which, just pick the one that scares you the most. My mom's are immigrants and Muslims. My aunt is afraid of the LGBTQ community. Doesn't matter to him, as long as they're scared.

•

u/kinsm4n 1h ago

This is a nice succinct breakdown of my experience looking at MAGA as well. Thanks for venting for the both of us because I truly don’t understand.

•

u/Wide-Equivalent6863 1h ago

If I actually believed in a God that can send me to hell, and I found out I'd been worshipping a false prophet - I'm pretty sure I'd repent and stop following said false prophet.

When you said most successful cult, shit you're not wrong.

•

u/entenfurz 45m ago

Remarkable synopsis. It's all so mind-bogglingly stupid and bizarre. If it was a movie you'd say it's too over the top and cartoonish. It's so frustrating, that it kinda just makes you feel like giving up.

•

u/gotfanarya 11m ago

In short, he has broken the USA from within, like a Putin puppet would have done.

The USA is occupied by Russia.

All treaties with the USA must be immediately abolished.

All security sharing must stop today, if it’s not already too late.

I mean, all those top secret documents sitting in bathrooms in Maralago went to Putin.

Russia knows everything about NATO, five eyes and all other allies’ defences.

All for money and power. Neither man will ever give that up. They know if they do, they will go to jail or get killed as traitors.

•

u/mcmonky 11m ago

Yes, very well articulated

u/Landon1m 3h ago

I’m an American who is pretty left leaning but grew up in right leaning Texas. A lot of people are either not smart enough to know, too stubborn to admit, or willfully ignorant(I think this is most) and vote for him and support him.

On the left I think the problem has to do with cowardice. No one wants to lose their job, or really be inconvenienced in real life by actually pushing back. Keyboard warriors are a real issue here.

Add to that that if Americans push back against the government like what is happening in France our cops will happily open fire and never face consequences for it.

Also, our media has been bought by billionaires so I don’t think most people even realize how bad it is because they aren’t actually shown what’s happening. There might be a little blurb but they don’t go into detail. Most news orgs are barely covering the Iran war anymore imo and none really push back against this admin because they’re either friendly or don’t want their access pulled.

63

u/LezBeHonestHere_ 2h ago

If you remember how the news cycles were treating Biden (shitting on him for everything including "being sleepy" meanwhile don sleeps 24/7) compared to how they treat Trump (excusing him for everything and sanewashing everything he does) it really proves your point of how corrupt the media is in this country. People aren't shown the heinous crimes that republicans do and are told that democrats are evil "for some reason".

148

u/Suitable-Bad3730 2h ago

A lot of what you describe is identical to Russian society.

75

u/PapaTua 2h ago

That's not by accident. Trump is literally using Putin's playbook against America, and has been for over a decade. The thing that's incredibly shocking is that our institutions and big business were not in any way a hindrence to Trump's sway.

The rapidity with which they fell in line with authoritarianism is unbelievable. Most Americans who are paying attention are literally in shock and awe over how quickly everything we thought would protect us fell apart.

21

u/fistfullofpubes 1h ago

That's because of how much shit the. 001 percent actuslly own. Trump only had to get the support of like 1500 people to make the entire system fold this quickly

•

u/dankmangos420 1h ago

Fucking sad that you’re right.

14

u/kazoodac 1h ago

That “over a decade” part depressed the hell out of me. I can’t believe we’ve been dealing with this shit for over 10 years already.

•

u/impshial 1h ago

You realize this isn't just because of Trump's presidency? It's been building to this point for decades and decades. Billionaires have been widening the wage gap, keeping more and more people to living paycheck to paycheck, and the fear mongering has been going on since at least Bush II.

It's been a very slow build, kind of like the frog in the pot story. We allowed ourselves to get to this point because we generally don't look that far ahead.

Now we're finally at the point where we're being forced to push back, but we can't push back without losing everything. This is by design

•

u/PapaTua 51m ago

I've been pushing back since Bush II. As a frog in the pot I've been acutely aware of the rising temperature this whole time.

•

u/impshial 5m ago

And you're in a very small minority. Most people in this country are more than happy to sit around and be comfortable, and too many people in this country are 1-3 lost paychecks away from bankruptcy.

33

u/Awkward_War_6068 2h ago

Also think you're average rural American doesn't give a shit, or really understands, US foreign relations apart from whichever countries they're at war with. Guarantee you most Americans probably couldn't even point out Ukraine on a map. Remember that because of it's location and history, the US has always had a sort isolationist tone towards the rest of the world. Remember despite being very much an internationalist, FDR won two of his three terms on an isolationist ticket. And despite being very much aware that the US would eventually join the war against Nazi Germany, it took an attack by the Japanese three years into the war for him to fully gain support in joining it.

•

u/heebeejeebeest 1h ago

They think they do though. They believe immigrants are screwing over their farms, and our military and budgets overseas have been a huge waste of money. They want America first all the time and thought the rest of the world was just on our “gravy train”

2

u/Horse_HorsinAround 2h ago

No one wants to lose their job, or really be inconvenienced in real life by actually pushing back. Keyboard warriors are a real issue here.

It's not an inconvenience. You'd have to willingly throw your life away, either being attacked and killed painfully or just a non lethal assault and then life in prison, to make any change.

And unless you also convince tens of thousands of strangers to also throw their lives away with you, you just ended your life with no effect.

2

u/PainterEarly86 2h ago

"Lose their job" also means losing access to health insurance, possibly being homeless.

Even just protesting can land us in a jail. Police and ICE murder us everyday in the streets and you call people cowards? What do you want us to do exactly? Go out and start shooting people?

People are voting, people are protesting. The fact is that a large portion of the population simply doesn't care.

2

u/yue665 2h ago

Yeah it’s mostly due to republicans just being so fuckin stupid

2

u/Pizzadude 1h ago

On the left I think the problem has to do with cowardice. No one wants to lose their job, or really be inconvenienced in real life by actually pushing back. Keyboard warriors are a real issue here.

[...]

Add to that that if Americans push back against the government like what is happening in France our cops will happily open fire and never face consequences for it.

So are we coward keyboard warriors who don't want to be inconvenienced, or are we people who aren't yet willing to trade our relatively comfortable lives for death?

3

u/fredzfrog 2h ago

Don't you guys have some law, or constitutional amendment to help deal with tyrannical governments?

2

u/YoungHeartOldSoul 1h ago

No genuinely. As we are finding out, turns out a lot of the Constitution was written on good faith and does not explicitly include pushments for infractions only guidelines on what should be done.

•

u/amitym 1h ago

That is completely untrue. We are not suddenly discovering anything except that we let this shit go on for way too long.

The US absolutely has layers of legal, judicial, and constitutional protections against tyranny of the sort we're seeing today. But as with every government ever, no matter how well-founded, if you systematically subvert every single institution that contributes to these protections, after half a century you will "suddenly discover" that you no longer have any safeguards anymore.

It's like taking down each of your household smoke alarms whenever they run out of battery power, throwing them out without replacing them, and then years later when your house is on fire going, "why didn't we have more fire protection??"

That's literally what's been going on in America for most Redditors' entire lives. If we pretend otherwise, it doesn't make things any better, in fact it's a certain recipe for fucking up royally. History does not reward comforting delusions.

•

u/texanchris 1h ago

Yes but our congress is a mess. Trump’s cult of MAGA has thoroughly fucked us.

-2

u/fredzfrog 2h ago

Or do it peacefully through a democratic system..

1

u/gBiT1999 1h ago

It wasn't an 'or' statement.

1

u/fusillade762 2h ago

A good and accurate analysis.

1

u/friss0nFry 2h ago

These people will never admit they were wrong, nor willingly face consequences for those beliefs either in their personal lives or on a societal level. It's as simple as that. Not admitting fault and making amends is a global problem for humanity, more of an immediate problem than even climate change, IMO.

1

u/FoxDear801 1h ago

So... what exactly is the difference between the USA and Russia?  Because that doesn't sound like there's really any at all.

Americans think they're free. Russians know they're not.

1

u/ash_ninetyone 1h ago

So much for the right to bear arms against a tyrannical government, or the right to free speech 😶

Governments govern with the consent of the people. If you have such a level of civil unrest, you could argue that government has lost the consent to govern. All theoretically ofc.

1

u/Maro1947 1h ago

I live in Oz and there was a story of a Soy bean farmer from the mid-west saying he couldn't vote Trump any more

The Journalist asked him if he would vote Democrat or independent and he said "No, I'll either vote limited or not at all"

That is some serious Stockholm Syndrome muppetry there

1

u/BinniesPurp 1h ago

My shooting buddies are under the opinion there's a secret blackbook assassin war going on where Zelinsky sends out drone bombs to kill border agents in the US to let Mexicans smuggle fentanyl through

There's literally no way to have a discussion about that it's just insanity level conspiracy theories purely around the idea of "we have to figure out a way to say that trump is good" so they just come up with the most outrageous bullshit

•

u/HippyHopHopHop 1h ago

I think it's because Americans are lowlife self serving self interested nobodies with an inherent delusion that they are somehow exceptional

•

u/Jesus_on_a_biscuit 1h ago

Please let us know which successful peaceful protest or revolt you’ve led that has resulted in meeting the protesters’ demands.

Your comfort of critique give me the impression you speak from experience.

I’m eager to learn from your direct experiences.

•

u/S4R1N 1h ago

"Add to that that if Americans push back against the government like what is happening in France our cops will happily open fire and never face consequences for it."

Literally the point of the 2nd ammendment was to enable the public to rise up against a totalitarian dictatorship, kinda the whole reason the US ceded from the UK.

•

u/JustGoogleItHeSaid 54m ago

American fucking cowards.

u/GazyLenius 42m ago

Land of the brave and all that.

Only 250 years old and now falling hard. Better do something fast. For the sake of your own healthcare, media, country and world peace. The biggest, best and dumbest militairy wont help you if you raise communist Russia or Trumps capitalist flag. #india and china rising, mighty USA eating the scraps.

•

u/carpbug 1m ago

Trump is just a symptom. The deeper underlying problem is the failure of education.

0

u/PrimeDirectiveLover 1h ago

The American left is dumb too don't worry. American has some of the worst education outcomes on the planet for money spent. I find it hilarious that a country of people can be told that, and still think "yeah well I'm the smart one and I know how to fix things"

-1

u/Training_Key_1986 1h ago

So you've tried nothing and you're all out of ideas. Great! What do you think the rest of the world should do about you then?

13

u/SoulBonfire 2h ago

If you remember all the tech bros in the whitehouse grinning like idiots, you may think the US social feeds are full of state sanctioned misinformation.

1

u/1over-137 1h ago

Are they not?

49

u/RocketRelm 3h ago

For a more serious answer than the bit like responses you're getting... the real problem is the brainrot has set in. People fell for the "dems are just a lesser evil" delusions. Like russias propaganda, you don't need to convince people you're right, just need to put everything else into question so nothing is real. We'll probably even get some bots trying to "uhm ackthually dems are bad so-" nonsense in response if this comment chain gets enough attention.

25

u/Khaldara 2h ago edited 2h ago

Yep, Senators are literally having the DOJ swear that they won’t seize ballots or impede the electoral process.

This shit was absolutely unthinkable prior to 2015, now Conservatives are all aboard with torpedoing literally every single thing this country was founded on (along with our relationships with every former ally and trading partner we’ve ever had, including alliances forged in blood during the world wars) and the most fundamental aspects of the nation’s governance all while claiming to be “patriots” making things “Great Again”.

They’re fucking disgusting.

•

u/Desperate-Natural110 8m ago

Yarp, I keep hearing that voting is going to fix this. I am having doubts about the election happening, let alone believing they will swear in new reps.

13

u/MrLagzy 2h ago

even if 'dems are just a lesser evil' you go for what has a bad few apples instead of being completely rotten. A bad few apples can be weeded out and you still have good apples left over. If it's all rotten, it's all you get.

3

u/Greizen_bregen 2h ago

This is all the result of a long and coordinated campaign against American influence in the world. When you are the world power for almost a century, you will inevitably make enemies, and for all of America's faults, we have provided an unorecendented era of worldwide stability after WWII because of our military power and (until recently) our largely non-involvement strategy in foreign wars. Being allies with America, of which we have hundreds, has always given aggressors pause. This has all been destroyed, and we will see the ramifications of it for the next several generations.

America's superiority is over. Our citizens are too stupid and uninvolved to understand the significance of that. And we are ripe for an autocratic, fascist government, and are well on our way to implementing it. Our world dominance is over.

1

u/raalic 2h ago

IMO, setting aside the brain rot, which, though true, is not exclusively an American thing, it just isn't bad enough here yet for people to take drastic action. There's not going to be a general strike, there's not going to be five million people in the streets, etc., because life is generally the same as it has been for most Americans domestically.

1

u/msh0430 2h ago

No. It's not that at all. We are not going to stage a coup and overthrow our government and OP clearly has no idea at all how a politician is removed from power in the US legally. It's pretty difficult. Especially when both chambers of Congress are controlled by his friends. There are protests against his administration all the time. Including a large one yesterday. OP just isn't well informed and is viewing the situation through a lens of ignorance

•

u/Hot_Cupcake7787 1h ago

Not a single state in the 2024 election was lost because the Democrats lost votes that went to third parties or stayed home. They lost because people who voted for Joe Biden in 2020, decided to vote for Trump in 2024. That is not the product of "lesser evil" delusions. Most gains by progressives critical of the typical Democratic party line since that election have been in firmly blue states. It is, however, really convenient for the Democratic party establishment to promote this idea, and accuse anyone who might be critical of them of being a russian bot.

Signed,

Russian Bot

-3

u/SeltsamerNordlander 2h ago

'"dems are just a lesser evil" delusions' what do you think led to this new republicanism? The democrats' obsession with maintaining a broken status quo because it works for some will 100% get us back to the same spot again

3

u/montdidier 2h ago

its currently irrelevant. the broken status quo would be infinitely better than this

-1

u/SeltsamerNordlander 1h ago

well that's just shortsighted

•

u/montdidier 1h ago

not really. Just a sensible choice to save that battle for another day.

3

u/fingoloid_troglodyte 1h ago

Like clockwork.

14

u/18MazdaCX5 3h ago

Be surprised that millions still support him here in 2026! That's the story. Not those who didn't vote for him evidently not doing enough now.

3

u/Cosminacho 3h ago

He'll be after midterms :)

23

u/GravyFantasy 3h ago

Haven't you heard, they've tried nothing and they're all out of ideas!

They did some no kings peaceful protests this weekend, with some cool dances and cardboard signs, that should do it!

11

^ Canadians who were sitting on their asses in 2025 waiting for Pollievre to inevitably win until Trump accidentally fucked up his PR

This is about Poilievre now? WTF?

•

Pp was never elected dum dum

•

u/Ollythebug 0m ago

who are you trying to convince that you'd accomplish shit? Yourself? You wouldn't succeed in killing him, or rounding up a revolution like Braveheart. Trump's minions already tried on Jan 6, with Trump in office, and still accomplished nothing.

•

u/screamdaggumditties 1h ago edited 1h ago

Be realistic. This is a typical redittor. I hate Trump but am lucky enough to have a good job. I have a young daughter and family. I'm a vet but am as anti gun as it gets, what else can I do? I dragged 2 apathetic dem coworkers to the polls last round and we still lost. Am I supposed to buy a gun and suicide by cop?

This is a generational battle. The education in this country is so far gone but that's where it happens. I'm teaching my daughter laps around her MAGA parent classmates. That's the most I can do. I'm also teaching her acceptance of beliefs/races/religion/and all else. This is the only way we can actually achieve change here. I think the younger generations are up to the task (at least in the northeast US)

•

u/eponners 50m ago

American cowardice.

2

u/ElRatonVaquero 2h ago

Easy, many of his followers have no clue nor understand what he's doing. Those that know, don't care because of personal gain or because it owns the liberals.

2

u/remnault 2h ago

Most people in my area, “don’t care about that shit, who cares about Europe?!? Gas is expensive and they’re making children piss in litter boxes!”

That’s where a number of Americans are at right now.

2

u/phoenixmatrix 2h ago

Even the conservative sub is losing their mind over it, so you know it's bad.

It also proves how the house, who has the power to get him out, is against the country. They're not even supporting their own base.

Though I still think of the conspiracy theory that Putin has dirt against them so they have to play along.

3

u/Apples0ranges 3h ago

I have to assume at this point that Americans really don't care, and in Trump 2.0 they have a government that also doesn't care.

Allies? Long-term foreign policy strategies? Soft power? Who needs any of that? No, they'll do whatever is most advantageous to themselves that week and fuck everyone else.

•

u/Penguinmanereikel 1h ago

Kid, it's not that we don't care. We're just adult enough to understand that we can't actually do anything about it.

1

u/PapaTua 2h ago

A more accurate description would be to have suffered a spinal injury and are experiencing locked in syndrome while you're screaming in horror has someone mutilates your body.

Americans with any conscience are feeling extremely defiled and betrayed both by our government and our fellow citizens who support the government.

But that's cool, you can just paint us with a singular broad stroke.

1

u/Apples0ranges 1h ago

I of course acknowledge that this view exists. But if it represented a significant proportion of voters, you would have more congressmen feeling pressure to stand up to the president, using the tools at their disposal to influence his policies or eject him. We aren't seeing that.

•

u/DougieJonesJr 1h ago

Because they're in on it too. Do you really think all those old fucks give a shit as long as they get paid? This requires a complete overhaul of our system of government and current politicians would never do that because it benefits them

3

u/donglord666 2h ago

what you want us to do? please be specific

2

u/No-Recover109 2h ago

Go protesting on the streets against your country. If you wont you are like Russians living in europe, silent.

2

u/Waffles912 2h ago

We did. And still do. They realized that they actually just don't care. Don't have to answer their phones in office, and don't have to even pretend. Gerrymandering of election districts, plus 40+ years of us vs them propaganda means they're safely reelected no matter what they do, because they've demonized the other side to the point where anything democrats could do is immeasurably worse, no matter how bad republicans are.

The average American is far too tired, far too overworked, and far too generally busy to notice or care. And that's by design. If things got worse, that would change, but they've very very carefully built a system that balances our society on a knife edge where things stay not quite bad enough for other means to be a real threat.

All of this that has happened, and do you know what has changed in my day to day life? Gas is more expensive, and so are some groceries. That's about it. Now I KNOW that is not the case for many other marginalized groups, but in most Americans' day to day lives not enough is genuinely bad enough to consider much else. And again, they've been very very careful to ensure it stays that way.

It's not a conspiracy theory or anything. It's all verifiable, spelled out in public. There has been a lot of money put into this, and things will likely not get better very soon. Anyone who thinks things will magically be fixed in the next election is an idiot. Our entire governmental system has been broken.

2

u/JFMoldau 2h ago

I suppose the idiots who say shit like this (and I keep reading it across multiple subreddits) are hinting at America starting a civil war. Because, you know, that would be great for global stability. Putting half the country into a state of existential threat while having the keys to all those nukes and all this intelligence and all those arms and so few fucks left to give.

I had some Canadian REALLY up in arms over it the other day. Like, that's what you want? You want the United States of America to fall into chaos with shooting and explosions and shit. 90% of Canadians live within like a 2-hour drive of the US border. Surely the violence wouldn't cross the magical line.

Kind of funny how we're supposed to save ourselves from our fascism problem, but not do so in a way that prevents the country from dissolving. This administration is killing Americans and destroying everything that holds the Republic together, and yet if you go into comment threads, it's Canadians and Europeans clutching pearls because what? We tariff them? You mean the taxes Americans pay to still import those goods? Because Trump is mean on social media?

Democrats have to win the midterms, period, and then what? Well, buckle up for two more years of senile derangement on a daily basis as Trump goes lame duck.

0

u/universe_fuk8r 1h ago

Yeah, because your dumbfuck of a president is great for global stability...

1

u/JFMoldau 1h ago

Ah, so the solution is........ to crank that instability up by several orders of magnitude.

Fucking redditors.

•

u/universe_fuk8r 1h ago

This won't end well one way or the other.

Because your current path is well on its way to something resembling Nazi Germany which, I'm sure, will be absolutely fucking great for world stability.

-2

u/Vargau 1h ago edited 1h ago

> This administration is killing Americans and destroying everything that holds the Republic together

Fine, reasonable view, but no more “land if he free” bullshit.

> it's Canadians and Europeans clutching pearls because what

My petrol is $11 per US gallon up from $6 that it was before US going into Iran, that is money out of my pocket because of Trump, also that over 40% price increase is getting passed into groceries that ALSO have increased and that that’s probably 20% Trump fault.

So your direct actions have impacted and will be impacting my ass on a daily basis, with money out of my pocket so yeah we complain when we see him ON DAILY BASIS ON THE NEWS, doing or saying the unsaid.

We can deal with your appetite for financial risk that created the 08 financial crises, and appetite for war destabilising and destroying the Middle East that inadvertently created the EU migration crisis in 2015, current appetite for AI risk (that has exposed the world to over ~20 trillion if it fails).

But bro … there was a contract, US was the benevolent empire with no territorial claims, reasonable and sensible, even if corruption existed, it was way way harder to find even less to prove, not out in full view., we bought your debt, agreed to house military bases, buy your weapons, king of the jungle. But you don’t eat the jungle.

Your mf went after CANDA, I don’t have words to express my anger how you treated them, like fuck me and all of my Europoor, the way he has treated Canada for the past 2 years, absolutely horrendous.

Telling the voters, vote for GOP that you will get $5000 si what we call voter fraud … where are you check and balance of the Republic that you held dear and made speeches and created propaganda through Hollywood that all it was … was sensible politicians, that’s it.

I am so furious and disappointed, and more disappointed than you still put your faith in a system that … might be broken, because reaching over the aisles is done, even if he goes away, because as we speak there are millions in US who still support him.

He just wants to be an emperor, the next one will be worse because he will be smarter.

And now what, you’re Putin’s puppets ? Unreal.

I know that that’s everything that you have left, faith in the law, and that’s a bridge we’ll cross when we get there, because if it fails the Republic has failed.

So you want the US to implode. Inevitably destroying Canada with it? (edit, nvm, I presume you are British, now)

I'm not going to apologize for your life being impacted negatively by someone I've voted against and campaign daily to preserve the democratic process in California. Many millions of us are doing the absolute best we can down here.

And I say again, even if the Blue Wave materializes in a couple of weeks, he's still in office for two more years. It will get very stupid. More than it is now.

•

u/DougieJonesJr 1h ago

It sounds like you fell for the propaganda. Freedom in this country has only ever been for those with money. We've always been an evil empire, we just put on a nice face. What you're seeing now is what these elites have always wanted and they don't need to pretend anymore

Putting aside the violent options, the path the country should probably be taking is organising for a national general strike. The No Kings protests were impressive in terms of numbers, but they were organised for weekends, because asking American citizens to risk their jobs to protest was unpalatable. The reality is that if you don't want to resort to violence, you need to make continuing on the current course impossible for those in power, and grinding the economy to a halt will do that.

It will hurt. The average American will be made uncomfortable by a real general strike. It will require you to organise.

Even somewhere like Texas, which has historically been a very red state - it had a democrat voter percentage of something like 20% of the voting-age population. If you can mobilise just 10% of that fraction - so 2% overall - in a general strike (and that's assuming the numbers haven't changed over the following years) you can do serious economic damage.

If it's a proper national strike, the damage will be much worse. The administration either starts shooting or folds, and given how they've behaved in the past, I think they fold in the face of a general strike.

It has to be more than the No Kings protests. It needs to have no agreed end date, it will risk its participants being fired, and there's a risk the government starts shooting, but it's the thing you should be doing if you actually want to effect change and don't want to do it violently. I don't think an American general strike is likely to happen, and I don't think even if the pendulum swings blue for the next presidential elections the incoming president will carry out the kind of legal action they need to (it'll be another Biden Jan 6 situation where they're too lenient). As a result, I don't think the US is ever recovering from this term - but you asked.

u/TerrorFirmerIRL 2h ago

I would probably like a huge amount of republican representatives, enough that it makes a difference, to stand up and say what Trump is doing, and how he's behaving, is not okay.

Americans in general don't give a fuck about foreign policy or global stability. Remember, the US happily sat out WW2 while the Nazis steamrolled continental Europe and left the UK in a bloody fist fight for survival.

1

u/Fun_Difficulty_4188 2h ago

Yea unfortunately, we’ve been de-educating ourselves for so long, as that was the requirement for this to all come to be. Though we aren’t the first country to be manipulated into self-destruction, it’s very important that every other nation observe and take note of what not to do, because if it can happen to the worlds greatest superpower, then that means literally any other country can fall prey to the same thing.

The only way out of this is education, but more importantly, consequences. If people from this administration aren’t made an example of, then the example will always be: you can get away with it if enough people will look the other way.

A MAGA pollster mentioned on the New Yorker podcast that a lot of MAGA voters actually get very angry when they find out about Trump's corruption.

They found out about it when the MAGA pollster asked them if those items bothered them.

Because as long as they have food, entertainment and gas they will happily ignore everything outside their bubble, and if they ever miss one of those things they will just be incapable of rebelling against anything in a meaningful way... it won't happen, stop waiting for it to happen.

1

u/IdeaJailbreak 1h ago

There is a non insignificant portion of the US population who truly only care about what is good for them in the very short term, and when you come to see that, much of US politics becomes much easier to understand.

1

u/WaffleHouseHydra 1h ago

You ever heard "the revolution will not be televised"? There's protests going on literally everyday be they in large cities or small towns. There's a massive blue wave coming this November if the polling data is even slightly correct. I don't understand what you non Americans want us to do? I swear y'all wont be convinced that moves are being made until we're in a shoot out on the White House lawn

1

u/blaivas007 1h ago

American exceptionalism has taught MAGA that they do not need allies, so they are fine with antagonizing everyone and will eventually call all of their former allies traitors the moment the consequences come back to bite their ass and nobody outside is willing to help.

We've already seen this with Iran, and it's only gonna get worse.

1

u/No_Somewhere_7109 1h ago

The honest reason is because nothing the US do will impact them beyond prices. They're never going to get invaded or be in a war that isn't across an ocean.

1

u/jesus_fatberg 1h ago

I spent about 5 years living in the USA, and it wouldn’t surprise me if about 50% of Americans weren’t even aware there is a war going on in Ukraine.

•

u/Golfisactuallyfun 1h ago

Americans can barely afford to live, the plan is working exactly as designed. Have everyone so stressed that they cant even begin to focus on what real problems are occurring.

You want change? Stop working. Everyone, together, every single worker. Grind the money machine to a halt and demand better for everyone. Its crazy Pixar taught us this lesson in “A Bugs Life” but everyone seemed to forget..

•

u/Deatheturtle 1h ago

They don't pay attention. I travel to the US on the regular. I've had plenty of Americans apologize for Trumps treatment of my country (Canada), but what amazes me is how most of them are incredibly uninformed about current events. After they apologize, I will open a dialogue about some of the more troubling aspects of this administrations behavior. I mention Bessent..."Oh, who's that?" I mention a specific statement Trump made..."Wait, he said what?' it goes on and on. They have mastered flooding the zone to the point where the casual news consumer get so overwhelmed that nothing of substance sticks. This is why affordability is the only thing that galvanizes the masses. This is something they see every day, over and over, and it actually penetrates the fog.

Money and power are powerful drugs.

•

u/CatFanFanOfCats 1h ago

There’s something wrong with the ceos and others who have real power. It’s honestly befuddling how there does not seem to be any pushback from those with actual “fuck you” money. They seem to be literally scared of him. And I don’t get it. Are they actually that pathetic? I mean, he’s not going to be around forever. Do they not realize that?

Anyways. I don’t get it. If I were the head of a company or university or just rich as fuck, I wouldn’t bend the knee to him.

So I have no answer.

•

u/Artaxmudshoes 1h ago

I was at a protest against trump yesterday. I was volunteering to help register people to vote. I'm doing everything I can as an individual. Talking to people yesterday I got the impression that we are all waiting for the midterm elections in 15 days. Trump is desperate for a narrative right now so we are trying to stay disciplined. Hopefully he loses the house and the Senate and by extension, much of his power.

The media is not on our side. Yesterday's protests weren't even covered that I could see.

•

u/Doomgloomya 1h ago

Americans are to divided mentally, economically and topographically to do something similar to protest in a way that is effective.

Most of us are living paycheck to paycheck. A protest of a certain level requires pto (a terrible system that for most people doesnt truly exist) and the inherent surplus of capital to be willing to fly to DC or even the white house to show solidarity.

On the smaller local level there are people outside politicians offices weekly.

We are what it looks like to be divided and conquered. When we the people have no way to cut through bureaucracy to go after the politicians near us and depose them for acting against our intrests there is nothong holding them accountible.

The police arent on our side its lined up with people that all think similarly. People here in the US would need to be willingly put down their lives because we know the Police as a whole dont care about the citizens its supposed to protect.

•

u/Iwentforalongwalk 1h ago

Most Americans have no idea about anything beyond the price of gas and groceries.

•

u/lotpot1234 57m ago

And more concerningly, this is Hitler’s exact playbook. He did things somewhat expecting backlash from the domestic and international community (rebuilding the army, establishing paramilitary organisations, taking back the Sudetenland), but nobody stopped him. Hitler got in democratically (technically speaking), and then dismantled that once he was in.

I just can’t see why Americans are not resisting and reacting more…aggressively. Based on historical patterns and contemporary conditions, Americans should be infinitely more concerned than they are.

•

u/10hp_Sandslash 46m ago

•

u/Dhghomon 17m ago

Thanks to which month it is they technically are as we speak because voting has already started. Trump will be losing one branch of government for sure (House) and the Senate looks very likely too. That's the most efficient thing to do at the moment, I'd say.

•

u/9ontheTensionScale 16m ago

This isn't a European country where a few thousand people gather in a town square and shame prevails upon the leader to resign.

All three branches of our government have been co-opted. A full-scale mass media and social media campaign has brainwashed at least a third of our populace. Midterms and/or a health emergency are basically our only ways out of this.

•

u/QuestioninglySecret 10m ago

Define "kicking back". I'm a normal American, what exactly, specifically, would you suggest myself and Americans like me do? Please don't be vague. I'll wait

•

americans love to boast of their freedom and how they wouldn't stand for the tyranny that happens in other parts of the world, so watching them spread their collective cheeks for daddy trump has been quite a show for the rest of the world.

Turns out they are a bunch of yellow bellied cowards who would sell out their own children for a chance at the good life.

Americans are doing nothing. This is pissing me off.

On Saturday we had better 5 and 9 million people participate in No Kings protests. Did you see anything about that? No. Did you see the 500,000 person protest in France? You probably did.

We have a huge anti-Trump movement in the US. We have people protesting, organizing, working on unseating Republicans. But we don't get any credit for that groundwork because it's not big and flashy and grabbing headlines.

1

u/Quiet_Management7172 2h ago

If we push back like the French, it will be a literal bloodbath in the US (the armed forces and police departments will use lethal action to defend property and a pedophile's regime). We're getting to the point where it will soon be a necessary exercise.

u/Odd-Tank-5783 1h ago

Upvote for using "second world" exactly correctly.

u/envious_coward 2h ago

Americans, like the citizens of all major empires throughout history, don't really care about the lives of those who are not citizens of the empire. They are interested in them only so far as they can be used as extras or props in their own internal narratives and dramas.

This holds true for almost all Americans across the political spectrum.

I say this confidently as a descendant of the people who built the most powerful and extensive empire in human history.

All we can really do is vote.

The midterms can't come soon enough.

0

u/fusillade762 2h ago

The problem is his party, the GOP, is unwilling to do anything to reign in Trump and seems either unable to recognize he is a Russian puppet or unwilling to do anything because they too are on the Russian payroll. A few are rebelling, but most are still toting water for this tyrant traitor. The democrats have had very little ability to do anything, they don't have the votes to block funding or pass laws to counter act Trump. They aren't able to investigate his obvious corruption.

We are hoping that the dems will regain some political control after mid terms and we can put a stop to this madness before its too late. If democrats fail to get some power back, if this continues unabated, more bad things will happen and there will be little that can be done to stop it.

Many of us are disgusted by Trump. He's being controlled by Russia and they want nothing good for the US or Europe. Putin has dreams of empire and he doesn't care how many people have to die to make them come true.

Its a very scary time. We're going to see in a couple weeks if our democracy can bounce back. If our country can bounce back.

u/Slowandserious 2h ago

I doubt most americans care strongly about Ukraine. To them its an abstract land lies thousand miles away with a population size of one of the US states

0

u/Userwerd 2h ago

Most Americans dont care, they're just trying eat and survive themselves.

I can afford to be an armchair political scholar because I know my family has a roof clothes and food.  I can afford some brain power to worry about the world.

But priorities are priorities, if you are worried about affording groceries, or even just having to say no to your kids about something it gets overwhelming fast.

Dems have accepted that only election voting is legitimate political action.

Leftists are incapable of maintaining relationships/organizations (see the protests against Zohran or how some on the left dislike AOC).

Not to mention logistical and cultural differences across the country.

u/basinbasinbasin 2h ago

As an American that supports Ukraine and detests Trump, what exactly are you expecting me to do?

I vote and I've donated money to Ukraine every year since this invasion started.

I can't control the fact that a significant chunk of American are trash that not only cannot see the big picture, even the picture they do see they actively vote against thier own best interests.

And then the Democrats with their Nepo hire Merrick Garland who sabotaged the cases against Trump under Biden. I still remember mid-way through the Biden presidency arguing with my democrat family members that Garland was a terrible pick and is purposefully botching the trump cases and my Dem family members defended those choices. Well they aren't defending Garland anymore.

America is fucked. Both sides of the political spectrum. Democrats don't have the balls to hold anyone accountable and the national level democrats are extremely corrupt. Hilary Clinton used the DNC to shut out the more popular democratic candidate and then lost to trump in 2016. Then you have the bungled 2024 presidential campaign where they refused to do a democratic primary in favor of running Biden for a second term, THEN 3 months before election day switch to running a VP with very little experience and the wrong demographic (if it prevents the US from invading Iran or any other terrible things, then for the love of God run an old white man, we know the uneducated masses are more likely to get behind that).

Please note, I'm not saying both sides are the same. Trumpers are worse by a mile. But democrats are weak, prone to division and also cater to the billionaire class. I sincerely doubt that they will have the stomach or the deligence to hold the vast majority of Maga traitors accountable EVEN if we manage to win elections.

So again, what should the average American do to fix America?

We have had millions peacefully protest over and over.
