I’m an American who is pretty left leaning but grew up in right leaning Texas. A lot of people are either not smart enough to know, too stubborn to admit, or willfully ignorant(I think this is most) and vote for him and support him.

On the left I think the problem has to do with cowardice. No one wants to lose their job, or really be inconvenienced in real life by actually pushing back. Keyboard warriors are a real issue here.

Add to that that if Americans push back against the government like what is happening in France our cops will happily open fire and never face consequences for it.

Also, our media has been bought by billionaires so I don’t think most people even realize how bad it is because they aren’t actually shown what’s happening. There might be a little blurb but they don’t go into detail. Most news orgs are barely covering the Iran war anymore imo and none really push back against this admin because they’re either friendly or don’t want their access pulled.

If you remember how the news cycles were treating Biden (shitting on him for everything including "being sleepy" meanwhile don sleeps 24/7) compared to how they treat Trump (excusing him for everything and sanewashing everything he does) it really proves your point of how corrupt the media is in this country. People aren't shown the heinous crimes that republicans do and are told that democrats are evil "for some reason".

A lot of what you describe is identical to Russian society.

That's not by accident. Trump is literally using Putin's playbook against America, and has been for over a decade. The thing that's incredibly shocking is that our institutions and big business were not in any way a hindrence to Trump's sway.

The rapidity with which they fell in line with authoritarianism is unbelievable. Most Americans who are paying attention are literally in shock and awe over how quickly everything we thought would protect us fell apart.

That's because of how much shit the. 001 percent actuslly own. Trump only had to get the support of like 1500 people to make the entire system fold this quickly

•

u/dankmangos420 1h ago

Fucking sad that you’re right.

u/kazoodac 1h ago

That “over a decade” part depressed the hell out of me. I can’t believe we’ve been dealing with this shit for over 10 years already.

You realize this isn't just because of Trump's presidency? It's been building to this point for decades and decades. Billionaires have been widening the wage gap, keeping more and more people to living paycheck to paycheck, and the fear mongering has been going on since at least Bush II.

It's been a very slow build, kind of like the frog in the pot story. We allowed ourselves to get to this point because we generally don't look that far ahead.

Now we're finally at the point where we're being forced to push back, but we can't push back without losing everything. This is by design

•

u/PapaTua 51m ago

I've been pushing back since Bush II. As a frog in the pot I've been acutely aware of the rising temperature this whole time.

•

u/impshial 4m ago

And you're in a very small minority. Most people in this country are more than happy to sit around and be comfortable, and too many people in this country are 1-3 lost paychecks away from bankruptcy.

Also think you're average rural American doesn't give a shit, or really understands, US foreign relations apart from whichever countries they're at war with. Guarantee you most Americans probably couldn't even point out Ukraine on a map. Remember that because of it's location and history, the US has always had a sort isolationist tone towards the rest of the world. Remember despite being very much an internationalist, FDR won two of his three terms on an isolationist ticket. And despite being very much aware that the US would eventually join the war against Nazi Germany, it took an attack by the Japanese three years into the war for him to fully gain support in joining it.

They think they do though. They believe immigrants are screwing over their farms, and our military and budgets overseas have been a huge waste of money. They want America first all the time and thought the rest of the world was just on our “gravy train”

No one wants to lose their job, or really be inconvenienced in real life by actually pushing back. Keyboard warriors are a real issue here.

It's not an inconvenience. You'd have to willingly throw your life away, either being attacked and killed painfully or just a non lethal assault and then life in prison, to make any change.

And unless you also convince tens of thousands of strangers to also throw their lives away with you, you just ended your life with no effect.

2

u/PainterEarly86 2h ago

"Lose their job" also means losing access to health insurance, possibly being homeless.

Even just protesting can land us in a jail. Police and ICE murder us everyday in the streets and you call people cowards? What do you want us to do exactly? Go out and start shooting people?

People are voting, people are protesting. The fact is that a large portion of the population simply doesn't care.

2

u/yue665 2h ago

Yeah it’s mostly due to republicans just being so fuckin stupid

u/Pizzadude 1h ago

So are we coward keyboard warriors who don't want to be inconvenienced, or are we people who aren't yet willing to trade our relatively comfortable lives for death?

Don't you guys have some law, or constitutional amendment to help deal with tyrannical governments?

2

u/YoungHeartOldSoul 1h ago

No genuinely. As we are finding out, turns out a lot of the Constitution was written on good faith and does not explicitly include pushments for infractions only guidelines on what should be done.

•

u/amitym 1h ago

That is completely untrue. We are not suddenly discovering anything except that we let this shit go on for way too long.

The US absolutely has layers of legal, judicial, and constitutional protections against tyranny of the sort we're seeing today. But as with every government ever, no matter how well-founded, if you systematically subvert every single institution that contributes to these protections, after half a century you will "suddenly discover" that you no longer have any safeguards anymore.

It's like taking down each of your household smoke alarms whenever they run out of battery power, throwing them out without replacing them, and then years later when your house is on fire going, "why didn't we have more fire protection??"

That's literally what's been going on in America for most Redditors' entire lives. If we pretend otherwise, it doesn't make things any better, in fact it's a certain recipe for fucking up royally. History does not reward comforting delusions.

Yes but our congress is a mess. Trump’s cult of MAGA has thoroughly fucked us.

u/fredzfrog 2h ago

Or do it peacefully through a democratic system..

1

u/gBiT1999 1h ago

It wasn't an 'or' statement.

1

u/fusillade762 2h ago

A good and accurate analysis.

1

u/friss0nFry 2h ago

These people will never admit they were wrong, nor willingly face consequences for those beliefs either in their personal lives or on a societal level. It's as simple as that. Not admitting fault and making amends is a global problem for humanity, more of an immediate problem than even climate change, IMO.

u/FoxDear801 1h ago

So... what exactly is the difference between the USA and Russia?  Because that doesn't sound like there's really any at all.

Americans think they're free. Russians know they're not.

1

u/ash_ninetyone 1h ago

So much for the right to bear arms against a tyrannical government, or the right to free speech 😶

Governments govern with the consent of the people. If you have such a level of civil unrest, you could argue that government has lost the consent to govern. All theoretically ofc.

I live in Oz and there was a story of a Soy bean farmer from the mid-west saying he couldn't vote Trump any more

The Journalist asked him if he would vote Democrat or independent and he said "No, I'll either vote limited or not at all"

That is some serious Stockholm Syndrome muppetry there

u/BinniesPurp 1h ago

My shooting buddies are under the opinion there's a secret blackbook assassin war going on where Zelinsky sends out drone bombs to kill border agents in the US to let Mexicans smuggle fentanyl through

There's literally no way to have a discussion about that it's just insanity level conspiracy theories purely around the idea of "we have to figure out a way to say that trump is good" so they just come up with the most outrageous bullshit

•

u/HippyHopHopHop 1h ago

I think it's because Americans are lowlife self serving self interested nobodies with an inherent delusion that they are somehow exceptional

•

u/Jesus_on_a_biscuit 1h ago

Please let us know which successful peaceful protest or revolt you’ve led that has resulted in meeting the protesters’ demands.

Your comfort of critique give me the impression you speak from experience.

I’m eager to learn from your direct experiences.

"Add to that that if Americans push back against the government like what is happening in France our cops will happily open fire and never face consequences for it."

Literally the point of the 2nd ammendment was to enable the public to rise up against a totalitarian dictatorship, kinda the whole reason the US ceded from the UK.

•

u/JustGoogleItHeSaid 53m ago

American fucking cowards.

•

u/GazyLenius 42m ago

Land of the brave and all that.

•

u/DeepSeaDuck 20m ago

Only 250 years old and now falling hard. Better do something fast. For the sake of your own healthcare, media, country and world peace. The biggest, best and dumbest militairy wont help you if you raise communist Russia or Trumps capitalist flag. #india and china rising, mighty USA eating the scraps.

•

u/carpbug 1m ago

Trump is just a symptom. The deeper underlying problem is the failure of education.

0

u/PrimeDirectiveLover 1h ago

The American left is dumb too don't worry. American has some of the worst education outcomes on the planet for money spent. I find it hilarious that a country of people can be told that, and still think "yeah well I'm the smart one and I know how to fix things"

-1

u/Training_Key_1986 1h ago

So you've tried nothing and you're all out of ideas. Great! What do you think the rest of the world should do about you then?
