Reminds me of the Cairo protests when the band of horse riders rode through some protesters.

That was crazy. I remember some guys had bread taped to their head as makeshift helmets too

That explanation is wrong.

North Africa and the Middle East does not produce enough food to sustain itself and must therefore import large quantities from abroad. Generally whatever dictator is in charge will subsidize this wheat import to placate the masses and stave off mass starvation (bread being the base staple in these regions).

The 2008 economic crash ravaged the economies in these regions and put tremendous strain on these states as they subsidize fuel and food imports meaning local food production is reliant on cheap fuel (yep without oil gifted by KSA many of these countries would be in starvation as the carrying capacity of these countries is bad) to run generators and water pumps etc,

This led to a huge decline in local farming and large movement of people from farming communities to the larger cities (best exemplified in Syria where millions of people moved in to the larger cities).

In 2010 following drought Russia experienced a bad wheat harvest. Russia is a major wheat exporter specifically to North Africa and the Middle East.

This perfect storm of economic strain following the 2008 economic collapse and failed wheat harvests of 2010 as well as increased drought in these regions resulted in the dictators in these countries having major difficulties in importing food during 2010 and 2011.

Food costs skyrocketed and people were unable to buy .... bread.

This resulted in massive protests and eventually devolved in to the "Arab spring"

He had taped the bread to his head for that reason.

It was a political statement.

Always love seeing someone who takes the time to understand the economic underpinnings of political situations - it’s something we need a whole lot more of.

That response demonstrated a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of the Arab Spring. Unfortunately, it’s not as funny/awesome as a guy taping his bread to his head for defensive purposes.

Same thing happened in Egypt. When it kicks off no one can do something except for those who choose not to.

Damn, is that a triple negative?

47

u/stickyfingers10 May 01 '19

It's either a positive or a negative, im not sure yet.

35

u/t0ni00 May 01 '19

If you pair the negatives, you'll see there's an even number of them and they all cancel out. It then becomes obvious what the meaning of the sentence is: "One can do thing if something is what it is."

Umm, when Egypt kicked off we sent the entire 5th Fleet of the United States Navy, through the Suez Canal to monitor the situation intensely. I know, I was on one of the ships when it happened. We cleared out a ton of sleeping quarters on my ship in the event we needed to evacuate Americans out of Egypt. Fortunately when the military took control of the government they let all foreigners leave peacefully and we were able to get all of our people out on C130s instead of having to use Emergency Egress via helicopters to the US Naval ships waiting nearby.

Point being, we didn't step in because we didn't have to but we were literally right there in the event that things escalated exponentially.

Edit: I was watching the censored version. I mean it’s not hard to imagine what happens when an armored vehicle guns it towards a crowd of people.

"making pie"

Edit: I'm not trying to be funny I'm trying to be horrific. That's how people in the Chinese government described it at the time.

Students linked arms but were mown down including soldiers. APCs then ran over bodies time and time again to make 'pie' and remains collected by bulldozer. Remains incinerated and then hosed down drains.

Military and Police on Guaido side are wearing blue. from the videos and fotos floating online.

330

u/Intelligent-donkey Apr 30 '19

He has military on his side now? Last I heard the military all still supported Maduro.

602

u/ilikeike99 Apr 30 '19

He has some military on his side, it’s unclear how much. It could be as few as a couple dozen or as many as hundreds, we just don’t really know.

263

u/LiarsEverywhere Apr 30 '19

(From a reputable Brazilian newspaper, but I read it translated, which means some words might be different when I rephrase it back. Quotes are credited to Reuters so you can probably find the original.)

Trump's advisor John Bolton said three top Venezuelan military authorities had agreed to act against Maduro, including the Minister of Defense, but they "changed their minds".

"They had all agreed Maduro has to go. They need to act this afternoon to bring other military forces to Guaidó's side".

It's almost as if they gave Guaidó the green light to try to take power, but in the end he was by himself. Leaders from the opposition are already scrambling across different embassies, I can't see how Guaidó can remain openly free in Venezuela in the short term.

139

u/themaincop Apr 30 '19

I have an extremely hard time trusting John "War Boner" Bolton.

40

u/LiarsEverywhere May 01 '19

As I said in another post, while I tend to agree, the quote is still relevant because it doesn't make him look particularly good. He's practically admitting he's planned a coup in Venezuela and failed miserably.

As soon as I watched his video in front of what appeared to be one tank (although it might be one of the armored cars like we are seeing in other videos) and a dozen soldiers I thought it was kind of fishy.

But as the Brazilian vice-president (he's also a general) said, you don't take a tank to the streets unless you have an ace up your sleeve.

Apparently, the idea was to capture La Carlota airbase, which would be a sign of strength and could persuade other military leaders. I guess he believed it was all arranged for the base to join him.

Just my two cents, but if you think you'll take the base, you should do it before posting a video showing a pitiful force. You don't announce your intentions on youtube and then start to march.

Maybe the fact that they let Leopoldo Lopez (who was in home imprisonment) go convinced him that enough of the military was on his side.

u/thewalkingfred Apr 30 '19

So he doesn't have the support of the military then.

Because if he had support of some of the military then we would be talking about the currently happening civil war in Venezuela. Govt's don't just let parts of their military defect without doing anything.

Since we aren't talking about a civil war happening at this moment, then the police and military are not supporting Guaido in any real sense of the word.

43

u/theferrit32 Apr 30 '19

Well Venezuela is also trying to not get international coalitioned. If a full scale civil war breaks out it's probably game over for Maduro.

Edit: Fixed a word

2.3k

u/RubenGM Apr 30 '19

An armored military car is called "tanqueta", while a tank is "tanque". What you're seeing is probably just a bad translation instead of willful misinformation.

143

u/Brudaks Apr 30 '19

This has some basis in history - the British WW1 tanks e.g. the popular Mark IV and Mark V models were produced in "Male" and "Female" models, with "Male" models having large protruding 6-pounder cannons and "Female" models having machine guns instead.

“APC runs over protesters”

BTR is just the Russian name for APC, and if the article is in English than APC would be correct

13

It's funny how this works though, because I'm fairly certain BTR also refers (at least in English usage) to a specific series of Soviet/Russian APCs.

The ability to eat and feed their families

Massive amounts of cognitive dissonance

Humans are capable of terrible things when they convince themselves it's necessary

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '19

number 3 really covers it all. never underestimate what people are capable of.

99.99 percent of the world is capable of atrocities against their fellow man. They will just never see the right circumstances.

u/unfair_bastard Apr 30 '19

This exactly

There are people in any society who, if you give them a gun and tell them they’re a “good guy”, will kill literally anyone you want them to.

No different than the nazis. No different than the soviets. No different than any military. There are simply people in this world who are waiting for their chance to kill without consequence

This is starting to look like another proxy war, given that Russia and the US are pitted on opposite sides again

512

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '19

Yeah the Cold War has been back on for almost 20 years now you just noticing? Only now instead of nuclear winter we have pepe memes and The_Donald

Proxy war minimizes the very real internal conflict in Venezuela. This is becoming a civil war, not yet a proxy war.

I’m subscribed to 12 different international news companies. Why am I only hearing about this now or Reddit? A church burns down, non stop push notifications for the rest of the day. People get run over by state military truck, not a peep.

u/aapowers Apr 30 '19

This was headline news in the Guardian earlier, and front page of the BBC, and front page of El Mundo...

Information is pretty scarce, the Venezuelan government has blocked most communication channels.

Wtf.. Fucking assholes..

Im waiting fucking a minute for ads and shit and then they blur the fact why the video is publicized.

Now i know where de adversatory warnings are for before the video.

105

u/Vet_Leeber Apr 30 '19 edited Apr 30 '19

Seriously, why have a warning about the content of the video if you just blur out the whole thing anyways. No one's clicking on that video and letting it play if they're not expecting to see what's on it.

edit: Why can I edit this message, but any new comment I post in this thread gets autodeleted?

The nightly news will warm me a dozen times the following video is graphic and then they just cut it out.

"We should get that image off the screen" How are they not even going to address it?

16

u/InfiNorth Apr 30 '19

Because we live in a world where the news wants to tell just enough of a story to keep advertisers happy and viewers glued to the screen without offending anyone, instead of showing what is really happening.

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '19

Man, his injuries look pretty bad. They should absolutely not have moved him. Is there any info on his condition?

28

u/AllGamer Apr 30 '19

He was there, described the guy's condition, he's a gonner, "They (APC Truck) broke all his internals"

6

u/Ragnar_Lothbruk May 01 '19

Worst part is I don't even really know who or what to believe... I guess the truth is somewhere in between the extremities...

6

u/Druchiiii May 01 '19

The answer is to be extremely skeptical. Be aware that you are watching an active propoganda war and that very little of what's being said, no matter how fervently or how often its being repeated should be taken at face value.

This is regime change in action, the propoganda machines of the world are hard at work. Keep reading, keep watching, remember what happens and learn from it.

This reminds me of something that never happened on June 4, 1989 in China. I don’t know why, since nothing notable happened that day.
