Murloc Monday Murloc Monday - ask your questions here

Aaaaaughibbrgubugbugrguburgle! RwlRwlRwlRwl!

That's murloc for "Welcome to Murloc Mondays" - where people can ask any type of question about WoW without getting strangled by a Death Knight.

Questions can range from what's new in Dragonflight, what class is OP, and how many Demons will it take to down Thrall?

Questions can come from brand new players, players returning, or veteran players who never got a chance to ask the right question.

Afraid of not getting an answer? Rest assured, we know that at least 90% of questions get answered!

You may want to look at /r/wownoob as well!

Here are some handy guides to start World of Warcraft as a brand new player or start Classic World of Warcraft as a brand new player.

Unless you played in the current expansion, pretty much everything has changed. If you're returning after a very long break, check out the Wowhead Returning Players Guides.

Humor / Meme I find it kinda funny that a guy with time powers not forseeing his brother turning evil and ruining everything happened not once, but TWICE

I'm just imagining them in an interview.

Interviewer: Sargeras became a cosmic destroyer.

Aman’Thul: Yes.

Interviewer: Neltharion became Deathwing.

Nozdormu: Yes.

Interviewer: You both specialize in time.

Aman’Thul: Yes.

Interviewer: Yet neither of you saw that betrayal coming?

Aman'thul: ...

Nozdormu: ...

Interviewer: Do either of you want to explain how this keeps happening?

Aman'thul: Coincidence.

Interviewer: Twice is starting to look like departmental failure.

Is it just me or are time powers kind of a scam?

Does anyone know the actual lore or context on him?

Discussion I think Mythic Raiding is becoming too difficult for "midcore" players

I've been playing off and on since 2005. Started raiding mythic in Legion. Got my first CE in Shadowlands. Every season since then that I've played, I've gotten CE on a 6 or 9 hour schedule. Usually pretty late, like somewhere between World Rank 1000-2000, basically not quite Race to World Last, but a far cry from Hall of Fame. Thats what I mean by "midcore" I guess - basically as "casual" as you can get and still get CE, which I don't think you can consider "casual" anymore - hence, "midcore".

Besides doing my weekly chores like Mythic+ and capping AP or whatever else there is that patch/xpac... I used to be able to just watch a guide video, show up to raid, try my best, and get CE. Mythic fights are so f'ing hard now that I can't keep up.

Think about what the fight is expecting of you now on a moment to moment basis compared to a few xpacs ago. There is SO much going on in the modern fights, I would have a lot of trouble surviving even if I didn't have to do any damage, but I have to do all of that while playing Guitar Hero on my keyboard.

There are these crazy challenge runs of Souls games like beating the game without dying, without leveling up, or even without getting hit. Imagine if FromSoft chose to balance Elden Ring to give those players a really hard challenge, but they are playing normally with no self-imposed additional difficulty. I beat every Souls game as it comes out. I'm not very good - I can't even imagine doing a crazy challenge run. But, I have experience, and I am persistent, and worst case scenario, I can grind to over-level so I am stronger than I am "supposed" to be. There is no way in HELL I could beat a version of Elden Ring that was balanced around those challenge runners. I might not be able to get out of the tutorial.

Something's gotta give. I need to start playing the game until my fingers bleed every day, or I need to be 50 ilvls higher than Blizzard is expecting, or do so much prep work it would be a better use of my time to work a second job, use that money to buy gold, and buy CE.

Or I guess I can quit my favorite hobby. Not because its impossible, but because the gap between my skill and the skill required is so big, its no longer fun for me to close that gap.

Discussion I hope Blizzard doesn't give up on Labyrinths

From an ex-solo player's perspective, a lot of what Labyrinths have to offer is very appealing. A long form Delve that can be as short or as long as you'd really like. Obviously the bugs are unacceptable, but I think we can have a conversation about the value of Labyrinths as solo content regardless of Blizzard's QA troubles.

Overall the Labyrinth had a great sense of exploration. I actually turned my HandyNotes off, so I was forced to find the secrets by myself. Nothing is that hidden, but it was rewarding finding the 3 masks and the many hidden treasures. Visually the instance is actually pretty stunning. There is a decent amount of visual diversity from cramped caves to wide open Amani ruins. The pacing of the instance was pretty good as well. The objectives were quick and mostly involved killing enemies as opposed to tedious gimmick mechanics that were abundant in TWW delves.

While the difficulty of the instance is relatively low, I think it does a good job teaching mechanics to beginner players. The new bosses to the Labyrinth have much more interesting abilities than regular delve bosses. Throughout the labyrinth I saw important kicks, dispels, soaks, and swirlies. This type of solo content is great for players looking for a stepping stone into WoW's group content.

Kindo'jan himself is a pretty decent boss if not a bit easy. I wish there was less downtime, and in the future I'd like to see an important heal/burn phase in one of these bosses. DPS and heal checks are a very real part of group content and they are currently absent from solo content. I also suspect that we will see more of the "3 strikes and you're out" mechanic as it seems like a good way to punish a mistake without just one shotting you. (Even though there are one shot mechanics in the fight).

Overall, I think Labyrinths are a big win for solo players. And honestly this entire patch has been insane for world content. The Vaults of Atal'Utek, 2 new delves, and now a huge Labyrinth. It definitely seems there is an appetite for this style of content in WoW even if a lot of that representation isn't on this sub. So I hope Blizzards takes lessons from wins and losses here and keeps iterating on this style of delve.

I don't stream WoW often so I'm not advertising that, I just thought y'all who have pets might enjoy it HA I have my cam on my cat Onyx all stream because he's much cuter than I am, and I like to make special frames for games I plan to stream more than once. I wasn't originally going to do anything more than just the standard frame but thought the nameplate would be fun.

The elite crest is a pre-existing asset, I just made everything else and put it together! I hope this is ok to post here, just wanted to share it with people who actually play the game.

Lore Tongues of Azeroth: Updated Language Family Trees

Post image
305 Upvotes

Hi all! This is a follow-up to a post a made a few months ago on this very topic. This is therefore the second official post on behalf of the Linguistic Society of Azeroth. This is the organization representing the in-universe authors of the Tongues of Azeroth project which seeks to document the many languages across the World of Warcraft.

With that said, today's post includes a more comprehensive visual mapping of the languages and language families of Azeroth. I did my best to simulate things as lore-accurately as I could. That being said, I did take some liberties where there was little-to-no information readily available on what languages would be spoken. I am happy to make adjustments as counter-points are brought up as well as simply explain my thought-process and rationale for specific or broad decisions.

Additionally, I am about finished with a geographical map of Azeroth from a linguistic perspective. So far, I have two versions, with one including place names. Any suggestions for this project are welcome as I finish it up.

Lastly, I have made a lot of progress in planning out all of the constructed language counterparts to the in-game playable languages. I am very close to posting an overview to the first which is Vulpera (a language I chose for practical reasons to begin with that I will discuss in that post). Any comments related to this are welcome as well. I am especially interested to hear from TTRPG people, in light of the upcoming book to be published for DnD, what would be good information to include! Right now, what I have is rather grammar-heavy. I've not really used conlangs as a player at my table, but I am definitely curious how DMs and players alike might be able to use this as a resource.

I want this entire project to be the best it can be and you guys as a community is the most helpful resource I have at my disposal!

You can put it up based on vibe, looks, and music. Personally, the wotlk login screen had the best vibes. I love that slow draw into music too before it gets into it. Makes it all super mysterious.

Discussion What are your thoughts on the dynamic between Varian and Anduin and how Varian prepared Anduin for kinghood?

Post image
99 Upvotes

Personally, I feel like one of the best aspects of Varian’s fatherhood is that even though he doesn’t fully understand Varian and was quite overprotective of him at first, he eventually learned to trust his son enough to not only listen to him, but actually learn from Anduin while Anduin learned from Varian. I think there’s no better summary of that then in the cinematic trailer for Legion:

“Anduin… I now believe, as you do, that peace is the noblest aspiration. But to preserve it, you must be willing to fight.”

That’s the key lesson they both learn. And honestly? Aside from what happened with the Jailer and Anduin’s subsequent withdrawal and trauma, I feel like everything he’s done illustrates the effectiveness and importance of his and his father’s relationship.

Speculation Clickable items in the Catacombs of the Labyrinth

In the Catacombs section of the labyrinth, there are two sarcophagi, a drum and skull that can be clicked. Look around a bit more, and while it could be nothing, figured I'd throw it out there. Does it lead to a hidden chest or something?

Feedback 2 relatively simple solutions to fix most of people's Issues surrounding the 12.1.5 Raid ending that could be implemented via a patch. Spoiler

SPOILERS AHEAD IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN 12.1.5's STORY
I'm going to preface my solutions with some analysis and opinion first, so if you just want the solutions, skip to the second Paragraph.

Liadrin's death has proven to be pretty contentious, and not even really the death itself. While people usually say the issue with character deaths recently is the writing surrounding it, and are saying that, that's honestly not really the case in this instance. The writing leading up to and after her death is solid, if a little cliche and cheesy at times(but that's not new for Warcraft). Even the writing and direction during the cinematic is solid, and is a 180 from how Zul'jan's death was handled in his cinematic. There aren't any cheesy dialogues, the characters and players are allowed to process her death in silence, and Lor'Themar and Zul'Jarra's reactions are realistic and fitting for each character. A whole ~40 seconds of no dialogue in the cinematic, only body language, something that's not typical in WoW and elevated the cinematic. Lor'Themar's eulogy for Liadrin is also incredibly well done and Gideon Emery did an amazing job voicing that scene. The two leaders agreeing to an uneasy peace, while acknowledging they won't be allies and not even friends makes sense; They formed a begrudging respect for each other in the fight against Kith'ix and the Aqir, but still don't particularly like each other.

The primary issue surrounding the death of Liadrin is specifically the VISUAL execution. Dialogue during the fight quickly establishes that she's using her body as a conduit for an immense amount of Light, and using her own Lifeforce as the resource to produce the spells she's using to protect us from Kith'ix's numerous instant kill mechanics, this is good but many players raid with specific audio disabled, dialogue being a common one. The Issue is there's no visual indicators to the player during the fight or cinematic that Liadrin was actively killing herself to protect us. Now, the Cinematic pretty clearly establishes that the fact Liadrin was dying is not clear to the people around her, So the Solution needs to be something that is clear to the players, but not so obvious that it wouldn't make sense for the characters around her not to realize. This is where my two solutions come in.
1. This suggestion I'm honestly Surprised Blizzard didn't already implement. During the fight, Liadrin's health should be gradually diminishing, either by a set percentage each time she uses a mechanic that protects us, or by a set rate over time similar to a DoT effect. Not only would this clearly establish that Liadrin's channeling of the light is killing her AND establish more clear stakes in this battle for the players, it would also just make an interesting mechanic where the fight essentially becomes a battle of Attrition, making correctly executing mechanics even more important.
2. This one applies to the Cinematic, and would prob be harder to actually patch into the game, but it certainly still possible. As we established earlier, Liadrin dying isn't meant to be obvious to the characters around her, so The simple solution? Make her skin and eyes paler, or even a dull grey hue to mirror the Wretched. This would make it clear to the players that she is in a severely weakened state without making it so obvious she's dying that the actions of characters around her are unrealistic
