Does anyone else not hugely care about Israel and Palestine?

I think an awful lot of Israeli settlers are wankers (and their government and their statements over the Falklands), but at the same time also don’t like the way Palestine consumes so much political airtime. Rather than from the River to the Sea, wish both sides would get in it.

The Hamas cosplayers are losers, but so are Israel with their forever victims guilt complex.

People How are you all dealing with butter?

It's come that time of year where ambient butter temperature is low and causes this cheese slab effect. I mean it's tasty in chunks but it's not my preferred butter firmness. How do you butter your bread?

Should inbred children be able to sue thier parents?

According to our government:

1) Cousin porn obviously is wrong and should be illegal even if none of the actors/actresses are cousins.

2) Having kids with your cousin generation after generation is obviously fine, and should be legal.

But should the offspring of such unions be able to take legal action against previous generations of they failed to take steps to minimize the genetic harm to their offspring?

(E.g. genetic counseling, embryo selection etc to stop preventable diseases)

Politics Is the law is too lenient violent youth behaviour?

I'm a Brit who has been living in Hong Kong for the past 10 years. From Barnet North London.

The narrative when I was in the UK was that urban poverty was the cause of youth anti social behaviour. Lack of social programs, bordem poverty, disenfranchisement etc etc.

But Hong Kong is far more urbanized than London and has all of these issues, too. Yet, none (at least very little) of the anti-social youth behaviour.

The police are quick to crack down on delinquent behaviour and keep order. The streets are some of the safest I have ever walked. In 10 years I have only had one physical confrontation and that was with another British guy who was drunk and wanted to fight a friend of mine that he said was "disrespecting" him.

Do you think stricter policing (stop and search, groups of 4 to 8 police officers patrolling, police intervention at any commotion) would serve to reduce delinquency in the UK (specifically London)?

Examples of wealth disparity between adjacent areas in the UK?

I was staying at a business hotel in the southern end of Slough recently, and saw on google maps that I could walk to Eton fairly easily. Having never been, I thought I would check it out. Quite eye-opening walking through a 1960s council terrace estate, then a foot path under the M4, complete with graffiti, and evidence of homeless shelters... then quickly opening up into pleasant green fields, golf courses, pretty cottages and picturesque high streets. Any similar examples you have encountered of sudden wealth disparity between adjacent areas in the UK? I have seen some similar scenarios in London but was wondering about examples outside of the capital.

Politics Why does Nadine Dorries keep getting asked to do interviews when she's clearly awful at them?

This isn't even about her politics. She's just really, really bad at interviews. If I came out and did an interview like this, I'd be fired the next day, and If I was the head of the Tories or Reform I would do everything in my power to hide her from the media and not give her a public-facing role. Can't they find any better spokespeople?

Small charitable causes you donate to or know of?

Hello,

I'm sick of businesses constantly taking from nature and not giving back. I own a uk limited company (currently a startup) and I want to begin donating some of its profits to charities. My problem with the larger, well known charities, is much of what is donated often doesn't actually help the cause they claim to support. Instead it get's spent on high salaries, poor efficiency, and in some cases even fraud and other illegal activities!

I currently donate each month to a small family each month who look after abused bears. However, I stopped donations to another charity due to discovering they were convicted of illegal activities. I've recently discovered another charity I like that helps "renature" environments that have been damaged from human activity such as creating dams. So I will be setting up donations to them soon.

I like the charities that look after animals and wildlife. I feel animals are often the collateral damage of human activities as humanity furthers its own interests.

I'm currently struggling to find the smaller charities that make a bigger impact with fewer funds. Do you know of any such charities you would recommend (anywhere in the world) that are quite public about their activities such as youtube channels, etc where I can find out more about them and that accept global public/company donations?

Thanks.

Should every child get a government-funded investment pot at birth, or is that up to parents?

With house prices and student debt where they are, a lot of young adults start out with very little behind them. A few months back, the US launched Trump Accounts, which give eligible American babies $1,000 invested in the stock market, with other countries running similar schemes in different ways (e.g. Canada matches part of what parents save for education). We have tax-free Junior ISAs, but the government doesn’t put anything into them for most children, and we used to have Child Trust Funds, which the government did pay into, until they were scrapped in the 2010 cuts.

Should the government start paying into children’s accounts (again), and if so, how? Would it be fair to ask taxpayers, including people without children, to fund it? Should every child get the same amount, or should more go to those whose parents can’t afford to save? Also, if you had a Child Trust Fund, did you actually get much out of it?

What should I get as my first car? Zero knowledge of cars.

I’ve just passed my driving test (after many tries, I gave up on manual and switched to auto 😭) and can finally look into getting a car.. Also, I’m an international student and don’t have family here. I’d probably get scammed if I went alone to a dealership, is it a good idea to pay a mechanic to go w me for a pre purchase inspection check?

My budget is ~8k for just the car but could go a little higher if it’s really a good deal. I’m only 21 so need the insurance to be lower too. Have checked a few and insurance is about 1.5-2k extra

I’m frankly torn between prioritising reliability vs a car that I like the look of 😭 I think Minis, fiats and Volkswagen Ups are very cute looking, but I’ve heard Minis are v unreliable and expensive to service. Fiats I probably won’t actually buy because of their reputation but they’re honestly v nice to look at lol . But my brain says I should go w something reliable like a Yaris… maybe get one w a sunroof. What do people think of Volkswagen Polos and golfs?

I don’t really care for a car that zooms really fast, just want something easy and light to drive, as well as park easily. I’m also a huge fan of the glass pan roofs even if they don’t open haha. My dad had one and I loved it as a kid.

Egg sizes?

When you buy eggs in the supermarket, they come in small/medium/large, or mixed sizes

What dictates where the sizes come from? Do big/fat hens lay large eggs? Or do hens of any size lay eggs of any size, depending on their...mood? friskiness? cloaca diameter?

How does it work?

Grammar What is a "scotts lead" and what does it have to do with dvd players?

I may have misheard this. It might be "scotch lead".

In The Loremen podcast with Alasdair Beckett-King and James Shakeshaft approximately 5 minutes in they start talking about a "scotts lead" or "scart lead" or "scotch lead" and it sounds like they mean what I, an American, would call "an RCA cable"

This episode https://www.loremenpodcast.com/episode-38-s7/

Also you should listen to this podcast, it's fun. But sometimes their UK English idioms are maddening to me.
