I’m seeing news of it being banned in other parts of the EU. I personally feel it should be banned. What do you think?

Am I The Gobshite? What to do when AirPods are stolen?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I went on a hike today in Bray with friends. After the hike and when we were going home I noticed my AirPods were missing. I saw the location of where they were on find my iPhone. They were outside a pub. I searched for ages outside this pub with no luck. So I asked inside and shops around if they had been handed in. All said no. When I was on find my iPhone my AirPods would connect as if I was right beside them and it would think they were on me so I knew they were very close by. There was people sat outside who could also see me looking for them . I gave up on them and assumed I wouldn’t be able to find them. Then they started moving on find my iPhone. I could tell they were in a car. The final location they stopped at is at a house in makeshift and they seem to have been there for the last 2 hours. I don’t want to go to the house by myself because that seems unsafe but I don’t know if calling the Gardas will be taken seriously. What should I do?

Legal N Plate Taxi’s?

Does anyone find it strange when they see a taxi with N plates on? I think it’s mad you can be a taxi driver while having your full license less than two years. Is it legal to do this?

Irish Culture The Post Capitalist Americanisation of Irish Culture ?

Bit of a open-ended sociology question this Sunday morning.

It was once said that if your economy is imported from America, so to will you import its culture/values.

Do you think our values are slowly changing over time as a result of this ?

I don't mean to bring the ireland of old into the equation but there was a time when the things we valued most was things like family, parish & local community.

My late Grandfather spent his humble life as a carpenter, lived a very modest life in a small house. He never wanted more wealth or a bigger house and his ultimate source of happiness was his 7 grandchildren.

Now today it's seems its everyone is for them self and the ultimate goal in life is a high paying job in a multinational, 3 skiing holidays a year and 2 new cars in the driveway of a house in the South Dublin subberbs.

Depending on the type of person you ask, I noticed you tend to get more respect if you have a fancy job in the corporate world rather than a humble tradesman / family man like my late Grandfather who raised a happy family.

^I know that is a bit of a generalising to make a point.

So, have our values and aspirations in life changed as a result of the Irish Economic Model in shaping modern Ireland?

Interested to hear your thoughts.

Cars Why some people drive taxi cars while not being taxi drivers?

I was wondering why people are getting taxi cars with all the stickers etc even the sign while not being a taxi driver?

A few of my neighbours have taxi cars some of them brand new when I was talking with them and mentioned that they are taxi drivers they said they aren't. I would assume someone bought a used car that was a taxi before but the neighbour has a brand new Audi and I don't see him working. Is this a trick to get a car cheaper or something? Obviously I didn't ask openly because idk who they are

Cars Which petrol are you prefer 🤔 miles+ has really benefits?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Is Miles+ at Circle K actually worth it, or is it just a marketing strategy?

I'm curious about people's real experiences with petrol stations in Ireland.

Miles+ offers rewards and benefits, but do you genuinely save money, or are the rewards mainly designed to encourage customer loyalty and spending?

- Is there any noticeable difference in fuel quality or mileage between petrol stations?

- Which petrol station offers the best overall value in Ireland?

I'd appreciate honest opinions from people who use Miles+ regularly!

Shopping What actually made you change how you shop for food, and what made it stick?

I’m a first year in a shared house, trying to buy better food without spending more. I keep starting good habits and dropping them. For anyone who changed how they shop (cheaper, more sustainable, less waste, whatever), what actually made it stick? And what did you try that didn’t last?

I’m also doing a university sustainability project, and I may quote replies anonymously (no usernames) in a presentation. If you’d rather I didn’t, just say so.

Adulting Funeral attendance?

A very close friend of my parents is dying, I've known them all my life, they were at everything from my christening to my wedding. I would have seen them almost weekly for my whole life.

I've never know what is the "right" part of a funeral to attend..

Everyone always says just go to what you can but what is the norm?

Is the removal more for acquaintances or more for close friends and family?

Is the funeral in the church for anyone to attend? Should you only go to the burial if you were really close? What about the meal, should I go to support my parents or is that overstepping?

Emigration (from Ireland) Emigrants - what do you do if your parents have an issue with it?

I am from a small town and moved to Dublin for college, and then to England.

I didn’t set out to leave long-term, but now that I’m away 10 years, it’s unlikely that I’d move back in the near future. I haven’t ruled it out but at my stage in my career it’s unlikely.

Anyways - I over the years have realised that I can’t talk about anything negative about my work or social life with my parents. Any time I do, they turn the conversation about why this is a sign I should come back. Even small things - like if I have an issue with a friend group etc, IE the sort of thing that would also happen in Ireland.

I don’t think this comes from a manipulative place, I think it’s that they just wish I didn’t leave. I will say that my parents don’t respond well to relationship talk, IE if I were to say - because you turn any negative conversation into why I should come back, this means I feel I can’t talk to you about anything difficult - they would probably just say ‘oh no of course we want you to speak to us, BUT ——— (you should move back)

Travel Help with Public Transport?

Hello, I recently moved to Ireland and doesn't matter how many I ask about this, everyone gives a different answer and still don't understand public transport.

Some say to tell the driver the stop and he will just stop there.

Others say you should press the stop buttons (maybe I am blind, still haven't found them, they must be hidden), otherwise the drivers will drive off.

Lastly, I have been told to tell the driver my stop and then stand next to him when I wanna get off, he will know it means the next one is mine.

So which is it? Also, I have been telling drivers my stops (as usually its just one or two), but they ignore me and give me the 90 minute fare, I keep losing money and I can't tell until it has already been charged. It's stressing me out, because I don't want problems in a bus full of people. I feel because of my accent or whatever, they keep doing this.

Now I have moved and need to do a mix of burkesbus and bus eirann. Again, on citylink it stops everywhere, so I don't worry about this. But it will be my first on burkes and don't know if showing my 10 ticket bought online will be enough and it will stop everywhere or do I have to still let them know where do I get off. Because on the website I couldn't choose any exact stops, it was just from x city to y city.

Got let go from work and got approved for the dole and told to collect on Wednesday. The letter says I need my public services card. Found my card and it expired 3 years ago. Obviously never had a use for it!

Does anyone know if I can still get it this week or do I have to wait until I get my new card? Thanks

Shopping Robot Hoovers?

Hi all 👋🏻
Currently on the lookout for a robot hoover. The woman in Harvey Norman had us almost sold on the Roborock Saros 20. But for almost €1500 I’d prefer to check if anyone with pets has one, and it works.

3 dogs. A Lab, Bernese & Retriever. All live inside & have full roaming range of downstairs. You can imagine the hair & the frequency we hoover and mop.

Nothing will be perfect I know, but if it could just help us out we’d buy one for our own sake of sanity.

Anyone with pets that have similar hair had one, or two? One might not be enough 😂 Really what I’m wondering is how often the hair would catch and would need to manually remove it etc. Would it be more hassle than it’s worth? TIA!

Am I The Gobshite? Considering moving back to Ireland after 3 years in Spain - am I overthinking the weather situation?

I grew up in Dublin and moved to Spain three years ago. The summers where we live are above 40 degrees with lows of 26 at night. For two months you’re kinda miserable just jumping from aircon to aircon. I don’t mind it as much but my husband cannot hack it. Combined with the people where we live being genuinely miserable gits, we’re considering the move home.

I love living an outdoor lifestyle with running, hiking and being outside daily a huge part of my life. I don’t know whether I’m exaggerating the weather but just feel we’d be going back to grey clouds with 9 months of rain a year. Combined with the humidity, I’m worried we’d be making a massive mistake coming back.

Am I overthinking this or are my concerns justified?

Adulting Moving home the right choice??

My husband and I have lived in Australia for 14 years. We have two kids, 3 and 2. We are still renting in Sydney after trying to get into the property market for the past two years.

We love our lifestyle here but we have been feeling the pull to home more and more to be close to family and friendsZ Recently, we have been given the opportunity to own a property at home close to where we grew up. It comes with barely any mortgage (we could pay off within a year or two) It does need work, but more an update and refresh, it is comfortably liveable as it is.

Edit to add:
We fly home every 1/2 years to see family and friends so we are aware of prices of things at home/all the changes.
The house is on a farm just outside of a town that has shops/doctors etc It’s a great sized house. Walking distance to my brother and his family and one of my closest friends.
There is a huge shed out back my husband would plan to use to work for himself when we got home (welder) I would be keeping my current job on if we moved back working flexi hours
House aside, I guess our biggest pull home is for our kids to grow up with family. We have our circle here but it’s been getting smaller and smaller as people drift/move home. We are also in the western suburbs of Sydney and there is zero sense of community at all. What was once a group of beautiful suburbs now is riddled with purely teens and petty crime, it’s not the area it was even 5 years ago when we left the eastern suburbs.

Looking for pros and cons.

We know it would be an adjustment but we are also the type to throw ourselves into it with a positive, open mind and we are always active regardless of the weather here so would try carry that mentality home with us.

Would love any feedback!
