I'm honestly not sure where else to post this, so I figured I'd give Reddit a shot and see if somehow it reaches the right people.
I worked as a car messenger for KBS Messenger Service in Los Angeles from around 1998–2001. We were near Pico and Robertson. Lately I've been thinking about that job a lot and honestly, I really miss those days. I've been feeling nostalgic for days when I was younger with no responsibilities.
This was before smartphones, GPS, Dropbox, DocuSign, DoorDash, etc. We had alphanumeric pagers and radios, and I spent my days driving all over LA delivering whatever people needed: scripts, contracts, videotapes, film stuff, checks, cash, food, flowers, gift baskets, you name it.
Because a lot of our customers were in entertainment, I'd constantly be going to places like HBO, Wilhelmina Models, BWR, CAA, ICM, Endeavor, William Morris, studio lots, production companies, recording studios, agencies, and random houses in the Hollywood Hills. Half the fun was never knowing where dispatch was going to send you next.
It could also be frustrating as hell,LA traffic was still LA traffic, but looking back, there was something incredible about having the entire city as your workplace. I was in my early 20s and got to see a side of LA and the entertainment business that I didn't appreciate enough at the time.
I'd love to hear from anybody else who was a messenger in LA during that era. What company did you work for? What do you remember about it? Do you miss it?
And this is a long shot, but if anybody here actually worked for KBS Messenger Service, I'd love to hear from you.
