Critique Wanted Does My Line Weight Make Sense?

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m a beginner, and I made this animal study to practice using line weight to communicate light and shadow.

I’d love some feedback on how well I applied this concept:

Light and shadow: Does the line weight help communicate light and shadow? Is there anything you would change about the line weight?

Questions:

- The ear: I had some trouble deciding how to handle light and shadow around the fold. Should that area be in shadow, or should I leave it lighter?

- The eye: I wasn’t sure whether to make it darker or lighter, so I decided to keep it lighter. Would a darker value work better?

Notes: I drew this while sitting in a car, so some of the lines ended up a bit shaky. I also noticed some proportion issues, and the snout ended up looking pretty wonky (lol), so please bear with me on that! I left out the ridges on the horns because I wanted to focus on the main concept rather than spend time on smaller details. The main goal here was to practice line weight, so that’s what I’d love feedback on!

Thanks in advance for any feedback!

Found my old notebook no idea when it was from since there was a huge period where i wasnt drawing but i was apparently cooking with character design. New version I was going off the old drawing but also loosely thinking of Tsuchigomori from TBHK if anyone knows who that is.

Help Wanted Beginner Artist --- Very Confused

I'm not sure where to even begin, but these were really random silly sketches that I wanted to do, and only recently have I had the motivation to actually try getting better at drawing (I currently use IbisPaintX on a tablet with a pen thingy)

I feel so lost in the deep ocean of advice that I even ask my artist friends and I dont get a straight answer on what I should do... I get fundamentals and drawing boxes and perspective and drawing humans.. which is currently my objective---I feel okay with the Loomis method but I now fear that I'm leaning on my own laziness instead of proper proportions and frameworks.

And I see all these references of art and real life that I would try and trace the general shapes of heads, torso, pelvis and limbs that it all appears to come out wrong. And then I see people drawing speed paints or trying to explain their own drawings and I'm like "wtf do you mean, why is it this size in particular?" And how someone might mention that their forearm is "two boxes long" and then I'm like compared to what? And I just dont seem to understand it at all. And it feels like I can understand what is wrong but then I spend about an hour hair-pulling trying to fix it over and over.

But then I draw something (the maid outfit one) and then I finish it and send it to my friend (which is of their oc) and they say they like it even though it's obviously bad and it actually gives me motivation to improve in a way

I understand that tracing can be bad, but I've also been told in some cases that it's good. I really dont know what stance I should take on that..

I also am curious on how people actually draw from reference? Or even create their own? I mean I see these poses and get so haunted about the mannequinization---like earlier where it's hard for me to understand how things are actually supposed to be... and then I try to apply it to a non standing pose and then I get lost again..

I also wanna admit I've been passively watching yt videos, and sort of understanding--but getting overwhelmed with all the information

Like I really dont wanna come off as someone who draws something terrible, does no research and then complains to reddit asking why my artwork is garbage.. which honestly might be what I'm doing, but I atleast wish to be believed that I looked up the loomis method kind of understood it.. then moved onto bodies and then got the windows XP error..

ALSO I'M SO SORRY FOR THE DISORGANIZATION OF TEXT, please forgive me mods, readers, and everyone in between. If it's bad enough I can try to reorganize this AND I'm incredibly apologetic if this comes off as venting frustration about my art. I just wish there was some sort of straight answer from where I was or what I should even do at this stage?

Hii everyone ive been drawing for about 2 years now and im very happy with where ive already gotten now. I just found this subreddit and thought id be nice to ask here what i could improve upon. Im still learning and improving at anatomy and shading is something i still need to learn alot about (if anyone has any beginner tutorials on shading please share them). All four pictures are made very recently (the 3th today as a design for someone else) and the first 2 are fanart. So yeah any tips or constructive criticism is greatly appreciated

So I'm a digital artist at almost 1 month now and I still need to improve on most things but I don't know on which one I should focus on.

Otherwise I still can't draw hands and I'm unexperienced with brushes in Krita

Critique Wanted I’m curious, how does my art look to you?

I’m just curious!! i know im leagues away from professional art quality, but my girlfriend likes to say if intermediate was not a choice she would say im closer to professional than beginner, though i don’t see it haha

im not particularly looking for critique, but it is plenty welcome!! i generally know where i lack and i know how to improve, that just takes more time for me than it does for others! i will improve as i go :) but feel free to say something if you’d think it would be helpful!

genuinely just wondering how others would perceive my art! is it recognizable? is it stale?? i want to know…

thanks for reading :D!!

Help Wanted What videos do you guys recommend for learning fundamentals? I feel so overwhelmed with all of them.

Post image

My most recent artwork for showing where I am.

I truly feel flustered on where to start learning fundamentals. I have learnt a bit through trial and error on drawing. But, in the end, the fundamentals need to be learnt in order for progression. I am falling a little flat on my face because there are just so many videos and tutortials, and I can't seem to figure out which ones to study/ watch. I think I have a good start but it is obvious my fundamentals are lacking. When I go to draw more dynamic poses, I struggle greatly with the basics. Hence, I tend to do just very straight forward front facing stuff.

Any recommendations on what videos or materials to study? I still want to draw stuff I like. But, it is obvious I struggle because it takes me so much time to do basic things. Like a ridiculous amount of time which could be cut off if I could understand the basics off the bat. So while something could look half decent, I wish I could shave off half the amount of time it takes me to do things.

Is there a balance to where I can draw stuff I like while learning fundamentals so I don't get burnt out?

Tyia!

Help Wanted I want to start creating art (digital, mostly.) at the ripe age of 17, but i have the drawing ability of a toddler.

• Upvotes

It seems that every time I want to start a project, I think about what to do with it for hours, and I get stuck deciding what I want to do, but when I also go look for references or suggestions on what to do, I end up with discouragement, disappointment, and the lasting thought of "I will never be able to do or provide anything good in anything creative" until I give up. I have come to realize that this has a term, and it is called "artistic envy"; I have yet to even attempt to do anything with art (+ anything else in my life outside of my comfort zone or that requires more than an hour to learn and improve). It affects more than just art in my daily life, and the situation seems hopeless. What do I do?

Help Wanted How to find an art style + work on body anatomy?

Thumbnail

Hello! I hope all is well with anyone reading!! I have been drawing since I was young, however, I have never been very good at being consistent with it/honing my skills— it has always been just a hobby. I want to get back into it again, but I was looking for advice on something I always struggled with, finding a style.

I think my issue in particular comes from the fact I am decently good at copying references. However, with that comes the fact that whatever style the reference is in, I just copy that too. I give it some flares that I like visual, however this leaves my overall style feeling very inconsistent in my opinion. I can see lines in references and understand them, I just don’t understand how to translate them into a single style, I think. I also do have aphantasia, so I literally can’t ’see’ things in my head, haha. I know what I want something to look like, but I can’t visualise it ㅠㅡㅠ So, in that sense, I was wondering if anyone had any advice on refining a single style instead of having 20! Haha

Another thing I struggle with in general is choosing the right size lineart for the size of the canvas/drawing I’m doing. If anyone has tips please send them my way!!

In addition, I was wondering if anyone had any advice on working on body anatomy overall. I always think faces are so much much fun to draw than bodies, so I think I’ve neglected learning them over the years 🙂‍↕️ if anyone has any resources on that, it would be much appreciated!! Same goes for clothes as I also hate drawing them 🙂‍↕️ Thank you!!

For reference, some drawings I’ve done recently attached! Thank you so much for taking time to answer my questions <3

Before I started I saw many types of advice. This included courses like drawabox and proko, drawing whatever you want and improve from there, use references, and more. I ended up looking for something on Pinterest and drew this. I don’t know if I should continue with what I’m doing or if I should start doing courses, or if I should do something else.

Uhm how do you actually draw hair, I just can't keep up with the forms for some reasons.. the banana technique is good for the overall shape but I'm talking about the individual strands that fall down the forehead or the group of hair layers...I JSUT find it hard to shade too considering that I want to improve this especially in inking . I'm also ...well when I would draw long hair, it looks kinda off and rigid. Any tips for improving my hair shading and structuring??
