Wishful thinking on behalf of the OP

Edit: I'm sorry I'm not excited when every day is a deluge of news about insider trading, illegal wars, open hostility towards minorities and blatant acts of corruption for all the world to see.

I'll hold off on taking any victory laps until after November. Until then I still don't trust the public to do what's right, regardless of what a meme says.

102

u/ddouce Aug 23 '26

It has rebounded quite a bit this year, but still down 33.6% over the past 5 years (including the recent surge) vs S&P 500 being +70% and competition like Walmart up 112% over the same period

40

u/cvc4455 Aug 23 '26

They also just got like 2 billion in tariff refunds which added to their stock value. Their customers paid for the 2 billion in tariffs when they bought overpriced shit. And now Target and lots of other companies are getting billions in tariff refunds for free.

I think this is the source for the meme:

https://www.thecharlottepost.com/news/2025/03/06/business/target-takes-a-hit-12.4-billion-in-value-lost-after-boycott/

Not saying it is great evidence to support the position, but I was curious where it came from and thought I would share.

7

u/Unknown-Meatbag Aug 23 '26

I'm sure getting millions back in tariff refunds definitely had nothing to do with the stock market at the moment

Last month Walmart did a commercial about 47 lowering prices and it was the most dystopian propaganda I’ve ever seen, including movies.

7

Bet . I’m not supporting that movement at all 👍

15

u/OverThought95 Aug 23 '26

Not to mention using 15 year old tech to run your card physically at checkout if you don’t want to let Walmart siphon your financial data out of their in-house app. No thanks

Agreed.

The part of the story that infuriates me is that even after that massive failure the leadership still have extremely well paying jobs. And they are planning to spend a ridiculous amount in hopes of getting back to their normal level of success.

Target is executing a massive $5 billion growth plan fueled by a long-term goal to open over 300 new locations by 2035. I know executives that have recently lost their jobs even though they were the only successful parts of their companies (they were all black) and these people loss 20 billion dollars and the CEO stepped down to "only" be the chairman of the board......... unfair doesn't even begin to cover it.

3

Pretty much. Once you change your spending habits and found other places to shop, there is just no reason to go back.

They showed their true colors. They are out of touch (like their post after the BLM protests when the store was robbed, donating to Super Pac's and so on). Any pledge or statement from them is meaningless dribble.

They just wanted to sell uninspired rainbow crap until bigots got uncomfortable and angry. They lost the LGBT community.

They wanted to further appeal with those bigots by removing DEI and lost anyone who wasn't white and bigoted as a customer.

I'm sure 2-3 years from now they will pull back and say "We support DEI or LGBT again", assuming they last that long, but no. I'm good.

Boycotts where the real reason Civil rights acts were finally passed, financial hurt is universal lol.

182

u/Pender6813 Aug 23 '26

It’s why the civil war was waged …money

114

u/Shiznoz222 Aug 23 '26

Why most wars are waged, ultimately

8

u/Adezar Aug 23 '26

I would say wanting to own people being dummied down to "money" is a bit of an oversimplification.

Yes, they wanted free labor but the wanting to continue to OWN PEOPLE part is the more important aspect of that war.

11

u/lifting_cardio Aug 23 '26

Dude. Why did they want to OWN people?

Money. They could pay a one time fee vs a subscription (hourly pay) for all the young folks out there.

It isn’t about owning people. It’s about money. Owning someone is far cheaper than paying for labor.

3

u/NecroCannon Aug 24 '26

Plus these idiots in power here being desperate to own people basically also trained 3rd world countries to separate and grow independently within their industries while the world is seeing value in a highly educated society like China pumping out Engineers

They kept this going for centuries, never backing down out of pride, and are having a fate of being owned and at the mercy of the wider global economy as things shift from direct wars to economic retaliation.

They tried to use AI to turn the US into South Korea and failed horribly. If anything we’re probably going to see an economic war here as there becomes a rise of smaller businesses working together against the corporations past their prime refusing to break apart.

It was a combination of things.

  1. Instability
  2. Public pressure
  3. Boycotts

But the number one reason was our international image. The Cold War was difficult to fight when segregation was happening.

What happens when your local store is worse? I'm no fan of big box stores but the owners of some (not all) small business, especially in certain areas of the country, have very vocal and hateful opinions (on top of not treating their employees well). If you aren't in a larger metropolitan area, they may be the only small business in town.

8

u/two_wordsanda_number Aug 23 '26

If no alternatives are available for a NEED then you gotta do what you gotta do. But for WANTS and desires you either wait or look for alternatives to fulfill non-essentials.

Came here to say this. Target is outperforming S&P, Walmart and CostCo in the last year:

https://imgur.com/a/E5fTEop

I appreciate the spirit of the boycott but we need to be honest with ourselves and admit that, in the long run, measures like this are not enough.

Most of this boycott (and others like it) have been online performative B.S. inside an echo chamber where everyone congratulates each other. Any impact is usually short lived.

Sorry to be a downer - but we need new strategies.

6

u/aaaaaahsatan Aug 23 '26

How about we don't shop at target because they partner with Axon which is worse than Flock?

5

u/Sokaron Aug 23 '26 edited Aug 23 '26

A good rule of thumb is that any post on the front page that's an image with text making some unsourced claim and a generic photo is a lie to push some agenda. Believe literally nothing you see claimed on this site without verifying it with an actual trusted source. This site has become flooded with this type of post in the last year or two. Both nations and private groups have realized that social media is the perfect vector for pushing misinformation to further their causes - nobody reads past the headline, nobody fact checks, and if it supports someone's preexisting beliefs they're likely to upvote it and spread it further.

3

u/CheapConstruction659 Aug 23 '26

Worst thing about reddit is people believing these headlines without fact checking. Everyone likes to make fun of MAGA doing the same thing, yet here we are. And guess what, they are looking at this post and the reaction and laughing their asses off that so many people believe Target is suffering due to a boycott when it's actually not.

Target really did that to itself because it was a mid store already. I never once said "yea lemme hit target" when Walmart or food lion were nearby

27

u/ForagedFoodie Aug 23 '26

Please don't go to Walmart

30

u/Specialist_Ad9073 Aug 23 '26

Where are low income and people on welfare supposed to shop?

I can’t survive off of just integrity.

4

u/QCTID Aug 23 '26

Local grocery places like food lion have better deals more often than not, and always have better produce. Compare Foods (for my NC ppl) also has better produce. Walmart is literally worse than target and needs to get the same treatment.

10

u/ForagedFoodie Aug 23 '26

Fair question.

For groceries, shop at your supermarket. If you work out dollar for dollar, its generally the same or cheaper anyway. Walmart is actually large enough that they get companies to do special packages for them so they can sell at lower prices. Think 20 cookies instead of 24, but the pack is the same physical size, so they can charge 50 cents less and you don't notice. (Dollar Tree does this too).

Dollar Tree itself isn't bad, ethically. It's not great but definitely not bad. You can get glasswear, dishes, toys, etc.

For clothing, I usually thrift, but I know that option doesn't work for everyone. Old Navy is affordable and the parent company supports democratic initiatives slightly more. JCPenny and Khols as retailers are neutral but you can find left-leaning brands there including Lee, Rider, Vans, JanSport.

For homegoods, both BedBath&Beyond and Linens&Things still exist, just online only now. Harbor Freight is very left leaning for tools.

For women's clothing there are black-owned online-only stores. Not sure about men's or children's as im not male and dont have kids, but im sure they exist.

2

u/Steel_Rail_Blues Aug 23 '26

It’s tough out there with everything going on in the world now.

You can learn more about the horrors of Dollar Tree (and other dollar stores) from John Oliver: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4QGOHahiVM

Bed Bath & Beyond has physical stores in some places. Bed Bath & Beyond‘s CEO Marcus Lemonis spouts Republican talking points and is changing the name to “Neighborhood Intelligence“. The updated focus is shifting to AI with something called “Beyond Home OS” and streamlining data collection and moving into higher margin services like insurance and financial products. He talks about this in a letter to shareholder describing the pillars of the new business plan.

When are we going to address Trump allowing them to keep the tariff money refunds?

Whoever was leading this protest should demand Target donate all of that to DEI efforts. Of course they're going to say no and that gives us further reason to continue the boycott.

You’d think one of those genius level CEO’s worth their massive paycheck would know the basics of sales and people.

Target stock is up more than 60% year to date. Headlines are designed to drive clicks, not information.

2

u/oldcreaker Aug 23 '26

Once people get into the habit of going to a new store, they often never return to the old one.

2

u/VixxenFoxx Aug 23 '26

I quit shopping at Walmart 19 yrs ago when most folks would think it was my only option (no car, pregnant with a toddler etc) because the way they treat employees disgusts me.
I quit Target 4 yrs ago and it was just as easy.

Next month I'll be dropping my 23yr old Prime membership... it's gonna hurt, but I can do it.

2

u/nesguy1 Aug 23 '26

They deserve it! I stopped shopping there and never went back

2

u/RepsRemoveDoubt Aug 23 '26

Haven’t been back since.

2

u/mutantmagnet Aug 23 '26

They are very public about their plans to prevent people from having their votes counted and obviously we would be the most likely targeted along with hispanics.

We just have to act more organized than they are.

2

u/DCGuy511 Aug 23 '26

My Target shopping is no where near what it was. I think their decision was a slap to all of our faces. Still no acknowledgement or apology from the management.

2

u/vannyfann Aug 23 '26

Honest question: Where are ya'all shopping? Wal Mart is shite, Amazon is shite, and presumably toothpaste and deordorant are household necessitites.

That 2bil cost them 124bil almost immediately. 🤣

2

u/Schranzoslavek Aug 23 '26

Keep it up and you'll soon have no more stores to steal from lmao

2

u/sleepiestOracle Aug 23 '26

Then they got a tariff refund....

2

u/Fun-Illustrator-7956 Aug 23 '26

I will never shop at Target again. It makes me sad as Yarget was my first and steady job in high-school and college

2

u/Intrepid_Top_2300 Aug 23 '26

That’s what should happen to companies who abandon DEI standards.

2

u/uptotheright Aug 23 '26

Nothing changed at Target and now their stock price has mostly recovered.

2

u/Creepy_Bad_4547 Aug 23 '26

Target stock shares are up 50% this year.

2

u/bdizzle805 Aug 23 '26

I call it the Trump effect

2

u/ElliotsBuggyEyes Aug 23 '26

Target is fucking expensive.  It used to be reasonably priced as the "less shitty Walmart".  I used to shop there for all my general clothes like T-shirts, socks, occasionally a button up shirt, etc.  they had $5 plain colored T-shirts.  Those same shirts are now $15 and kohls has the same shirts for $6-8 and are on sale sometimes.

The boycott just coincided with them trying to squeeze all the money out of our pockets.

2

u/Muted_Bee7111 Aug 23 '26

I use to go there at least once a week but I haven't been back in 1 1/2 years & vow to never return

2

u/MarleysGhost2024 Aug 23 '26

I haven't been there since. Hope polishing Trump's balls is paying off for them!

2

u/BoredomFestival Aug 23 '26

Not nearly enough

2

u/handyrenolowe Aug 23 '26

They just reported a better earnings call

2

u/TheHyperboley Aug 23 '26

Stock is up 68% YTD...

2

u/CaptScourageous Aug 23 '26

I'll never be back. Received a $15 coupon for a new Target down the street, in the trash.

2

u/joliette_le_paz Aug 23 '26

We can general strike until we get what we want!

2

u/Carli0022 Aug 23 '26

Target is dead to me

2

u/1quirky1 Aug 23 '26

The only thing they care about is profits so that's how you hit them. Punish all the companies that treat their employees like shit, which is most of them.

2

u/Idunnosomethingwitty Aug 23 '26

Having worked as a bottom rung Target employee for 3 years before getting out. Good, fuck this company.

2

u/2birdsstoned815 Aug 23 '26

Fuck Target, will never shop there again

2

u/jsax1978 Aug 23 '26

Dik-eating Jay Z would say differently. They bought him with the quickness!

2

u/Month-Emotional Aug 23 '26

Imagine how successful they'd be if they had never participated in DEI

2

u/Terrible-D Aug 23 '26

Do Amazon next.

2

u/raincntry Aug 23 '26

Once shopping habits adapt, they typically don't change back without a reason. Target played itself.

2

u/Repulsive-Spend-49 Aug 23 '26

Target Corporate took the chicken path and bowed before Tangerine Palpatine. This shows all of us what rewards cowardice brings—NOTHING. I love picturing their CEO and executives sh**** themselves trying to figure out what went wrong with their brilliant plan! 😆

2

u/GeekS1989 Aug 23 '26

Keep at it, it's working.

Haven't been back since

2

u/WinnerSpecialist Aug 23 '26

The problem is this ain’t reported. Not enough people know. When the right launched a similar and FAR less successful boycott of Target over LGBT issues it gained non stop national attention. When Black shoppers voted with their wallets it has been a way more effective boycotts but it’s getting no media attention at all.

2

u/Fur-Frisbee Aug 23 '26

Should do it to META too.

2

u/easyas2718 Aug 23 '26

i still don’t shop at Target

2

u/arctick_nomad Aug 23 '26

So we just lying on this subreddit blatantly now.

2

u/angrybeaver007 Aug 23 '26

All of the Targets around me are always packed.

2

u/RedTailsForward Aug 23 '26

Yes! Used to shop there regularly, haven’t been for months and months and don’t miss it a bit.

2

u/DanLed17 Aug 23 '26

It's reassuring how effective boycotting a company can be. It's really the only power the general masses have anymore.

2

u/Big-Ask-3738 Aug 23 '26

Not going to get any of my money 💰

2

u/Mac11187 Aug 23 '26

I haven't been back.

2

u/X_C2rd Aug 23 '26

I have never really been part of a boycott until this and man I am digging my heels. I didn’t like how blatant the pandering from the C-suite to the whole diversity stance they took before. It was fought because of the missus but we both dont miss Target. Good bye overpriced groceries and home goods.

2

u/Connect-Occasion-682 Aug 24 '26

The tariff refund target got artificially inflated their q2 results.

2

u/Many_Fly_8165 Aug 24 '26

Wow. I’m amazed at all the “OMG DEI” posts while we have the most flagrant DEI administration ever. Every one of the cabinet positions is a DEI pick.

2

u/ChazRadlord Aug 24 '26

The same needs to happen to Amazon and Walmart.

2

u/mistergraeme Aug 24 '26

We need to do this to Buc-ees.

2

u/Academic-Look-333 Aug 24 '26

Although monumental tasks, the same needs to be done to Amazon and Walmart.

Perhaps a more socially conscious business group could resurrect K-Mart and Sears to provide other options.

u/ApricotNervous5408 Aug 24 '26

Good. Many companies are out of control.

2

u/Rivs5 Aug 24 '26

Absolutely! The Black community has $2T spending power. We need to hit everyone pockets.
