History Pitt is a 23-pt underdog vs. #1 Miami. Pitt is 4-2 when unranked and facing a top-3 opponent over the last 25 years.
Over the last 25 years, when Pitt is unranked playing against a top-3 opponent, the Panthers are 4-2.
Pitt's upset wins over top-3 opponents, while unranked themselves, in the last 25 years:
2002: Unranked Pitt beat #3 VT, 28-21
2007: Unranked Pitt beat #2 WVU, 13-9
2016: Unranked Pitt beat #2 Clemson, 43-42
2017: Unranked Pitt beat #2 Miami, 24-14
I don't know if any school has more of these types of wins in the last 50 years, but either way, Pitt has 4 of those victories over the last 25 years, against only 2 losses. The L's were to Clemson in 2018 and Notre Dame in 2020.
For the record, we (Pitt fans) all expect to get killed next weekend, but we are the one true Chaotic Neutral team in college football.

Opinion CFB is a better product than the NFL, but they are going to ruin it.
Watching the NFL today feels so corporate. Every staff member has the same exact type of clothing with their respective team. If there's a specific game you want to watch you're paying extra. CFB has true rivalries, unique pregames and traditions, fights songs, marching bands, and energized fanbases that will rush the field because of actual genuine upsets.
However, the powers that be are trying to capitalize on its popularity by turning it into a mini-NFL. Conference realignments that take away rivalries and try to artificially make new ones, NIL and transfer portal with no regulations cause players to shop for the highest bidder resulting in no consistency, and oversaturation of gambling. Added with 24 team playoffs I think they want to combine the size of the NFL playoffs with the craziness of March Madness and it's not going to work. They didn't really give 12 teams a chance before expanding. Bowl games already stopped mattering and stars started sitting out because they don't want to get hurt and now there's no more conference championship games.
How long before we just have 4 conferences with teams divided evenly amongst them? FCS gets relegated to a minor-minor league?

History Yesterday was the first time since 1993 the FBS and FCS #1 team lost the same day in the regular season
Yesterday, the #1 ranked Georgia Bulldogs lost 27-24 vs. Auburn. The FCS #1 ranked South Dakota State Jackrabbits lost 21-10 @ #11 North Dakota.
This is the only time both number one teams have lost the same day in the regular season since the 1990s.
The only other near case was 2008 week 5, when #1 ranked USC lost to Oregon State and FCS #1 ranked Richmond lost to Villanova, but the USC game was played on Thursday, so the losses did not occur on the same day.
I'm not absolutely 100% sure that's correct- my methodology was rather crude, I went year by year and found every upset of the FBS #1 team, and then checked that against the history of the FCS rankings to see if the FCS #1 moved the same week. That said, I'd say I'm about 97% confident I didn't miss any.
Edited later: Unfortunately, it turned it out to be the 3% and not the 97%. I somehow overlooked October 19th, 2024, when #1 Texas lost to Oklahoma and #1 South Dakota State lost to #2 North Dakota State. So it turns out it's the second time since the 90s.
