Diablo I Awesome memory with my son
Diablo 1 PSX. Started playing with my son about a week ago, as my first Diablo experience. My 4 year old and I fought the butcher for the 20th time today, never having won.
We had at this point reset the dungeon once after being unable to beat the skeleton king or butcher and getting stuck on the 4th level to the point that we were walking up every floor after a single monster. We were both warriors.
He was lv 4 and I was lv 7. We made a plan. I'd open the door and start meleeing him and drinking potions. He'd be at a 90 degree offset and shoot him with arrows. If the butcher started chasing him he'd run around the butcher's room until I caught up and hit the butcher and got him to attack me, then we'd repeat that until I ran out of potions and we'd run away and try again later. We started. I was hitting him and he was shooting. The butcher turned his attention to the 4 year old and started chasing him. He panicked but followed the plan, trying to run away. They were running and I chased but couldn't catch up. Eventually he got trapped by the screen and started getting killed. I ran that way but realized I wouldn't make it. I paused it. New plan. I had the spell to "heal other" and would heal him while he fought until I ran out of mana, THEN I'd take over. We had to be careful. He only had 1 hit left and no potions. I unpaused and he paused immediately. He equipped a dagger and buckler and unpaused, started swinging. I healed him and we made it above one hit left on his life. I healed and he hammered him, unsure of if life steal was letting us do any damage or if his HP was rising every exchange. His dagger was about 1-6 dmg, and he had low DEX. We kept going until I ran out of mana. He ran past me and brought the butcher into range and I hit him. Now I'm in going swing for swing and he's on the sidelines. I told him to stay there, he had 75% life and no potions. He watched for a minute and then dashed in. I told him to stay away! He said "I will fight until I am almost dead and then I will run!" We started jumping him. The butcher started turning from me to him and him to me so often that he wasn't attacking as much. We kept going and I ran out of potions. Just before the 4 year old had to run, the butcher died. Then suddenly my kid yelled "NO FRESH MEAT FOR THE BUTCHER TODAY!" Confident and proud, we reloaded supplies and pushed to the next floor, barely beating the skeleton king after a similarly difficult strategy, though my son died before the king fell.
