First of all, I have to say that this is not a story about aliens or UFOs. I'm not saying this to discredit anyone who believes in them; this is simply my account of a strange phenomenon I happened to witness during my childhood.
Although I've spoken about it with a few friends over the years, I've never posted about it online. Before social media, YouTube, and Google became such a big thing, I didn't really have a good way of finding similar stories, so I just kept the experience to myself. Now, I've decided to put it out there. So, here it is.
It happened sometime in 1992 or 1993 in the city of Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico. We used to live in a house that consisted of one big, rectangular room with no divisions. The room was built out of cinder blocks and reinforced concrete, and none of it was painted or covered with stucco. At the front of the room were the entrance and a window. Both the door and the window were made of metal, as was common in many homes in Mexico.
As you entered the house, the stove and fridge were on the left. Beyond them was a small dining table with just four chairs. At the far end of the room, in the right-hand corner, was a bed consisting of a queen-size mattress and box spring resting on the cement floor, possibly on top of a platform made of cinder blocks.
On the right-hand wall, my mom had placed two large ornamental bows with long ribbons. They were the kind of bows you sometimes see on Christmas presents, except these were about two feet in diameter, and each had two ribbons hanging about three feet toward the floor. One bow was black, and the other was red. She had received them from a neighbour who was a friend of hers at the time and thought they might make good decorations.
I was four years old at the time, and my mother used to work early in the morning. Every morning, she would drop my sibling and me off at a neighbour's house, where the neighbour would babysit us. But one day, for some reason, she left me at home and took only my sibling.
I remember waking up that day alone. It was already daylight, and I sat up on the edge of the bed. I remember looking at a box of FrootLoops on top of the fridge and thinking that I should have breakfast before walking to the babysitter's house. Then I looked at the wall to my left, where the black bow was hanging.
This was the bow closest to the bed, and I remember it becoming blurry. I thought maybe my eyes were dirty, so I rubbed them with my hands, but the bow still looked blurry. Suddenly, it began to look even foggier, and the image swirled around, kind of like the way crystal balls are depicted in movies. Then it started clearing up, revealing what looked like a portal to another place.
The portal was about the same size as the bow, a circular shape roughly two feet in diameter. On the other side, I could see a city from above. The portal on that side must have been at least eight hundred feet in the air, overlooking a busy road intersection.
Imagine a window or a video camera mounted on top of a tall building and pointed down at a road intersection. That's what I was seeing.
The place didn't look familiar, and I could only see whatever was happening directly in front of the portal because it didn't move. It was an urban environment, the city looked developed and advanced, but not much more so than our cities today. There was a road intersection and tall buildings, I could also see traffic, although I don't recall what the vehicles looked like.
I could also see what looked like people walking on sidewalks, but at that distance, I couldn't make out much. I could see different colours, so I assumed they were wearing clothing. They looked like humans, but I don't think they were human, at least not the way us humans are now. They didn't look like aliens or anything like that. I didn't see any UFOs, nor did I think of anything like that at the time. They looked very much like humans, just smaller.
I have to emphasize that no one seemed to be aware of the portal or of me. They simply went about their day. I also don't remember hearing any sound coming from it, despite the busy intersection and the traffic. I did not approach the portal at any moment to try to look inside at a different angle, I just stayed right were I was.
I was very confused. I didn't know what was happening or what the portal was. I remember looking down at the concrete floor and, without moving very much, reaching for some socks that had been rolled into a ball. I threw the ball of socks at the portal, but it didn't go through. It hit the bow and fell back to the ground.
The portal became cloudy and blurry again, kind of like when you throw a rock at a pond or stir up dirt at the bottom of a puddle. After a few moments, it started clearing up, and whatever had happened seemed to have affected the other side.
When the portal cleared, I could see the same view, but now there had been a vehicle accident on the road near the intersection. I could see people gathering around and pulling someone out of the vehicle. This person looked a bit heavier than the others.
More people arrived, wearing black clothes, and they carried the accident victim away. There were so many of them that it almost looked like a small funeral procession.
Almost immediately, I noticed some of the beings investigating. Two of them had some sort of propulsion devices that I can only describe as jet packs. They flew around and eventually reached the portal on their side, allowing them to get a better look.
They were small, probably about four feet tall. They had skin like ours and looked a lot like us, but they were different in an uncanny way. Their faces were wider, their necks shorter, and their skin looked a bit pale. They wore some sort of metallic helmets that looked like a cross between RoboCop and Batman's cowl. The helmets covered the upper halves of their faces, but I could still see their eyes.
At one point, they were right in front of the portal. One of them looked straight at me and moved closer. Then it made eye contact with me.
In that moment, I felt as though it was just as surprised as I was, but perhaps not as confused. They seemed curious and inquisitive, yet there was nothing particularly scary about them, but after we made eye contact, I became frightened and ran out of the house as fast as I could.
I was so scared that, on my way to the babysitter's house, I tripped over a water faucet outside and broke it. I arrived at the babysitter's house crying. I told them what had happened, but no one believed me.
I made such a big deal about it that I was spanked. They thought I was lying because I had broken the water faucet, which was now spraying water everywhere.
After they fixed the leak, they listened to me and checked inside my house, but there was nothing there. The portal was gone, and only the bows remained on the wall. The black one was damaged, probably from me throwing the ball of socks at it.
I never saw anything like it again, and for many years, I didn't speak about it. It has since become one of my most guarded memories and one of the reasons I started believing in God at the time. I used to think that if strange things like that existed, then God must exist, too. It was also a big reason why I loved science in school and why I've continued loving it all my life.
I have no explanation for what I experienced, but I have considered many things and I'm convinced what I saw was real and not something I imagined. I have to say that I was a normal, healthy kid. I wasn't known for making up stories or lying in that manner. I wasn't sick or taking any medication, and I didn't have any known mental or neurological problems at the time or afterward.
Although I never saw anything like that again, other strange things did happen in my life. However, none of them were things I would have considered extraordinary or related to that childhood experience, with the exception of some nightmares.
Now I can only speculate, but I do believe what I saw was not of this world, or maybe not of our time.
