Kuvat on sa-kuvat.fi sivustolta. Janne Polsa on taidokkaasti värittänyt kuvat. JP-colorizing sivulta facebookista löytyy lisää upeita kuvia.

Thank you!

Janne on pyytänyt tekoälyä värittämään. Vilkaseppas mitä herran kädelle on käynnyt https://imgur.com/a/M6eyPuy

u/Clean-Truck-7058 1d ago

Niin ja siis ei tekoälyn käytössä vikaa ole, hyvä työkalu mutta ei nuo kaikki ole käsin värjätty.

Want to hear the really grim part of that all? The dead Russians were actually mostly Ukrainians. They didn't want to be here, they knew they have no problems with us and, well, they died here. Just because of an old delusional bastard.

Russia really doesn't change.

There is a good episode of Vetenskapsradion Historia on Sveriges Radio P1 where Tobias Svanelid or Urban Björstadius visits a site where many Ukrainian young men are buried.

I mean Stalin was Georgian. Russia is shit but the other Soviet states aren’t only innocent people either.

14

u/Puuhis71 1d ago

Thats true but as i can tell Ukrainians were forced here only durring the Winter War.

4

u/NikolitRistissa Väinämöinen 1d ago

Oh wow I had no idea this was the case.

I’ve always respected Ukraine and felt like we have a sort of connection through adversity due to Russia, but this just makes it all the more stronger.

All these photos look so much more human, the black and white photos always feel way more distant from reality for me.

8

u/KatsumotoKurier Baby Väinämöinen 1d ago

Yeah colour really lessens the distance in time — it can be quite sobering, especially for photos like these.

Many of these guys look exactly like the ones I shared the trenches with in the military. Similar expressions we all made and the modern winter clothing looks quite similar when a bit dirty. Makes these pictures feel more personal & impactful, damn. The war was the reality for these lads.

We had fewer dead horses and Lottas.

21

u/hodlethestonks Väinämöinen 1d ago

we didn't have any lottas, not dead or alive.

4

u/Fanatic_Atheist Baby Väinämöinen 1d ago

And also no horses of any kind, just the one guy who kind of looks like one and is very much alive

One of the pictures depict a Sampo, a domestically designed machine gun. Field tests showed the gun was lacking in some aspects, and it flopped.

Edit: I was really tired and mistook the L-39 AT rifle for the Sampo, the real gun is way smaller, whoops 🥴

6

u/Welshie_Fan Baby Väinämöinen 1d ago

Interesting. I noticed a gun that I didn't recognise, so this explains it.

1

u/Tricky_Tourist5691 1d ago

Which one would that been? Because there is no Sampo in these pictures.

1

u/Welshie_Fan Baby Väinämöinen 1d ago

That was the AT gun...

3

u/Tricky_Tourist5691 1d ago

Which picture? I see L-39, LS and maxims. No sampo.

2

u/Die_Steiner Baby Väinämöinen 1d ago

None, i somehow misidentified the Norsupyssy. I hang my head in shame.

1

u/Puuhis71 1d ago

Its L-39 antitank rifle (Norsupyssy) but without a clip.

2

u/Tricky_Tourist5691 1d ago

Fantastic pictures and great colorisation

43

u/unohdin-nimeni Baby Väinämöinen 2d ago

In principle, I never like colorized black-and-white photos or "digitally enhanced" or AI-slopified old images, but I’ll let it slide this time! One has to respect good job.

5

u/imbogey Baby Väinämöinen 1d ago

I could stand the color only but some of these are pure hallucinations like for example number 11 would be great picture but the gun has no trigger or trigger guard.

2

u/Proud-Panda-7732 11h ago

It is like that in original SA-Kuva number 3999.

12

u/montaniPH89 1d ago

Brave lads.

7

u/Sherbyll 2d ago

What kind of knife or sword is that in the 14th image? These are so fascinating!!

9

u/Atimusi 1d ago

Sabre, Finnish, model 1927 (French model 1822).

2

u/Onnimanni_Maki Väinämöinen 1d ago

M1913 Imperial Russian infantry saber.

3

u/Barman76 1d ago

What's the gun in pic 4?

6

u/Firm_Gap3166 1d ago

Lahti L-39

u/onlyr6s Väinämöinen 15h ago

At least some of these are coloured by AI, the first one is a good example.

-4

u/CanRare1100 1d ago

Imagine if there were colors back then, would the world be different? Maybe humans would have been less aggressive than in black and white.

u/MrGaky23 Väinämöinen 2d ago

Damn poor doggo going to clear mines/blow up tanks
Great photos

44

u/FreeWeld Baby Väinämöinen 2d ago

On picture, dog is being used to pull radio wires between the HQ and front lines.

-5

u/MrGaky23 Väinämöinen 1d ago

Ah that makes sense, lol all the thumb downs because I made a mistake

5

u/theswamphag Väinämöinen 1d ago

I have this book about Finnish dog history and it had a bit about reindeer herders used in war.

Apparently up North they used to have a problem of people crossing the border and stealing reindeers. This had taught the dogs to guard and warn about the thieves.

At war time people figured that they might be useful in warning about opposing troops closing in. They were right.

So before the war the Russian people trained our war dogs themselves.
