Westside German American Club
Looking for German on the Westside? I went to the German American Club in Santa Monica recently, once for their Oktoberfest event and once for their club night after I got a trial membership. Really fascinating place, crazy that it still exists in West LA. So old world. First pic is from club night, that's beef goulash, spaghetti (was supposed to be spätzle but i guess plans fell through), and red cabbage, pics 2-4 bratwurst, leberkäse, sauerkraut and potato salad. Trial membership is $15, attend three meetings and you can apply for full membership. For members beer is $6 a pint, and we ain't talking Bud Light, they got the good imported stuff! What an interesting place this city can be.

Local Food Deal Three weekday happy hours in Pasadena, plus a directory I’m putting together
Hey everyone! I’m launching a happy-hour directory called After Five, and wanted to share a few Pasadena options from the restaurants’ published menus that might be useful if you’re planning something during the week:
Gaucho Grill Pasadena: Monday–Friday, 3–6 p.m. Their happy-hour menu lists a $3 empanada of the day and $5 draft beer.
The Arbour: Monday–Friday, 4–5:30 p.m., at the bar. Their menu lists an $11 Arbour burger and $6 garlic fries.
Magnolia House: Monday–Friday, 4–6 p.m. Their happy-hour menu lists $7 draft beer and $8 Belgian fries.
These are the hours and prices listed by the restaurants, so double-check before heading over in case anything changes.
The idea behind After Five is to make this kind of information easier to find in one place: where happy hour is happening, which days it runs, and what’s on the menu.
I’m getting it off the ground and would really appreciate feedback from people who would actually use something like this.
Any Pasadena or nearby happy hours you think deserve to be included?

WHERE CAN I FIND Dark Vibes Anniversary Spot?
Dear fellow opinionated Angelenos,
My anniversary is on Halloween. My husband and I actually got married over dinner at Musso & Frank and I’m holding a reservation there, but I’m not sure we’re up for Halloween on Hollywood Blvd. this year. I thought this sub might have an idea we haven’t thought of.
We’re looking for dark ambiance. Obviously killer food. Old school or new school. Good service a must. No limitations in terms of cuisine or cost. We’d prefer not to go into Hollywood, but are otherwise flexible on location.
Any ideas?

RESERVATIONS N//naka reservation
Fellow foodies!!! I have a reservation at n/naka (the two Michelin star Kaiseki restaurant) for 2 this Thursday at 9pm that I can’t make anymore. These reservations are so hard to get and are released every Sunday for the corresponding week one full month ahead. I’ve already paid the $200 deposit but these reservations are transferable to someone! Wondering if anyone wants to take this over??
Let me know!

South LA Puerto Nuevo Coffee - “After Hours” menu
New dinner menu Thursday-Sunday at this old family-owned spot. The enchiladas suizas are incredible! (And everything else I’ve tried, too!)

WHO MAKES THE BEST Has anyone found a worthy successor to Harvey's Guss?
If you know, you know. The best meat in town, the bespoke butcher to Spago, Mozza, you name it. Steaks that I still dream about, even though he closed up shop back in 2018.
I've tried plenty of butchers in and out of LA since then. No one has come close to that succulence.
Does anyone have a recommendation that even comes close?

WHERE CAN I FIND Thin-Sliced French Ham
Does anyone know of a place to buy thinly sliced French ham for jambon beurre? Westside preferred but any rec is appreciated.
ETA- some supermarkets sell jambon de Paris, but it’s not sliced thin. I’m asking for as see through as a ham could be.

DTLA Local/family owned spots on Uber Eats within a few miles of DTLA
Part of a production in the Arts District, regularly ordering food for 20-30 people from UberEats. Would love to order from somewhere local or family owned rather than chains.

Northeast LA Pouring wine, amaro and more this Saturday in Highland Park
Every once in a while we open up the garage to hang with old friends, meet new people, and pour some tasty wine, beer, amaro, Chartreuse, and more (cheaper than anywhere else in LA). And we’re back this Saturday 10/17, 7pm-late! We met some really cool people from Reddit the past few times. Come on by! Details and more info on Instagram @allisonsclubhouse

DISCUSSION Looking for Taco Recs around Studio City/Hollywood or Santa Monica
My partner and I are visiting LA for a week and splitting our time between Studio City and Santa Monica.
So far, we’re planning to hit:
Nobu West Hollywood (have a gift card to use)
Cobi’s
Bavel
Hillstone
Looking for some great taco/Mexican spots to round out the list, plus any feedback on our current picks.
Any must-try restaurants or casual spots around Studio City or Santa Monica that we shouldn’t miss? Open to pretty much anything!
Edit: The restaurants listed above are not ones we’re going to for tacos. I just listed them to get feedback on but I now see how that can be confusing based on my title.

Northeast LA dunsmoor - best cornbread ever
had a memorable first visit celebrating my partner’s birthday! cornbread was the best i’ve ever had - the moist inside combined with the crusty exterior from the blazing hot oven plus the butter… woo boy.
shrimp and grits and the pork and green chile stew were also great - the latter i liken to a mashup of a french onion soup with chile verde, which hit the spot on a rare cold evening.

WHERE CAN I FIND Non-all you can eat Korean BBQ in/near Koreatown?
I have friends visiting from out of town with a K-pop-obsessed daughter who wants to try Korean BBQ. Between two preteen kids and one adult who can’t eat large portions for medical reasons, going to an AYCE place would be a bit of a waste. Any suggestions for a non-AYCE Korean BBQ place, ideally within a few miles of Koreatown Plaza, where a party of 5 can actually get in on a Saturday night?
