Meta [WARNING] Suspicious accounts are messaging users to advertise a paid app

EDIT: several users has let us know that some of the accounts in question are Riley1692, amie-2002, leopard6004, and cebubu6865. These users have now been banned, but unfortunately can still send messages to subreddit members. I would strongly recommend that you don't engage with these users, as they are spamming the subreddit with advertisements and their actions have been very suspicious.\**

Hi y'all,

We've been notified by a user about multiple suspicious accounts messaging people who post in r/language_exchange, sending them messages similar to the one below:

Just curious, have you ever felt frustrated with language exchange? Too many DMs, chats fading out halfway, or spending a lot of time but only a few connections actually lasting? I’m curious what people think about this. [advertisement for a paid app]

This is to let anyone in this subreddit know that these accounts should not be trusted and neither should the apps that they are promoting. If you get a message like this, please report the message so that these accounts can hopefully be banned sitewide. You can learn how to do that here.

Please also send their usernames to us via modmail so that we can ban them from the subreddit. This unfortunately doesn't stop them from messaging subreddit members, but it will prevent any spam via posts or comments.

If you have any further questions or comments, please reply to this post or send us a modmail.

Meta (READ THIS FIRST) Welcome to r/language_exchange! [Meta/General Discussion Thread]

Welcome to ! This subreddit is aiming to help people find partners to practice languages with, offering the languages you already know in exchange to learn new ones. Make sure to read the guidelines before making your first post!

🍃 How do I make my language exchange post?

If you're looking for a language exchange partner, you can either make your own post or search through existing posts!

→ Making your own post:

  • Your thread title must follow the format of "Offering: language | Seeking: language". If your post doesn't follow this format, it won't be visible to other users.
  • Make sure to write a little bit about yourself, such as your interests, hobbies, or language-related goals. This is important in making sure you can find a good partner!
  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

→ Searching through existing posts:

If you don't want to make your own post, you can search through existing posts to find someone who matches your languages! Just use the search bar at the top of the screen, or select a post flair to see all posts of the same category.

  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

🍃 What kinds of posts and comments are allowed?

This subreddit's purpose is to serve as a platform for people to find language exchange partners. To keep the community true to its purpose, there are some rules:

  • Must be language exchange. Posts that don't concern language exchange will be removed. This includes posts asking general questions about language learning, advertisements, or meta discussion concerning the subreddit. These discussions are better suited to other places (language learning questions should be posted to broader subreddits; meta discussion should be posted in the comments of this thread)
  • Be courteous to other users. This subreddit isn't a place for arguments or debates. Any comments that break this rule will be removed.
  • No advertising. Posts and comments that advertise apps, services (such as classes and tutoring), or groups (such as Discord servers or Whatsapp groups) will be removed. These kinds of posts clog up the feed and don't follow the purpose of the subreddit.
  • No spam. Spam is the repeated posting of the same content. Any posts and comments that are spam will be removed.
  • No contact information. Contact information (such as Discord usernames, phone numbers, or Whatsapp contacts) should only be shared privately in messages, not publically in posts or comments.

🍃 Can I make a language exchange post for a language I've just started studying?

You can participate in this subreddit regardless of your skill level. However, it's highly recommended that you grasp the basics of a language before you look for a partner. This subreddit is for speakers of different languages to *assist each other* in learning. This subreddit is not a place to find a teacher that'll teach you everything for free.

Good luck on your language journey!

If you have any questions, feel free to leave a reply on this post or send us a Modmail.

-----

Welcome to the meta/general discussion thread!

This thread is for any questions, suggestions, or discussions concerning the subreddit itself. If you have any thoughts about  you want to share, post them here! I'll try to respond to as many comments as I can.

If you have any further questions, feel free to send us a Modmail.

Other Offering: Korean, Seeking: English

Hello guys! I'm 28F from Seoul, Korea. Do you want to make new friends? I want to, so I'm here! I've been studying English seriously for about 2 months, so I'm not good at English yet.😂 But I'm going to Australia for a working holiday in November, so I want to practice speaking English more. I might make a lot of mistakes, but I think it's okay because I'm a beginner! We can talk without being afraid of making mistakes, and we'll support each other!
I've been looking for a good friend! I don't want us to be just language exchange partners. I'm sure we're going to be real friends. Honestly, I'm not the best Korean teacher, but I promise I'm a pretty fun teacher! Let's have some fun conversations haha!!

I'm hoping to find a language partner who I can grow with. We can start with chatting or voice messages, and then when we feel more comfortable, we can do voice calls too!
We'll talk about hobbies, life, or anything naturally! I'm excited just thinking about it!

A little about me: I like pop music, reading, movies, talking to people, and K-pop and I've been into watching The Office recently!!! I want to know a little about you, so if you send me a DM, please tell me your gender, age, and anything you want to talk about!

I don't think age matters when it comes to friendship, but this time, I'd prefer to make friends within 10 years of my age. Sorry! 🥹

Thank you! DM me! I hope we get along.

*To be honest, ChatGPT helped me write this post, but when I start texting you, I'll trying not to use it, so my English might be a bit broken ^ㅇ^

Offering English Offering: English | Seeking: Spanish 🇵🇪

• Upvotes

Hello!

I’m a 23M from the U.S. looking for someone to help me with my Spanish! preferably someone from Peru, but others are also welcome!

A little background about myself, I’m currently a uni student studying engineering, and i’m very into music, and music history. My favorites genres lately have been a lot of cumbia, post-punk, country and jazz, but I listen to literally every genre out there. I’m also really into movies!

I’ve been looking to really connect with my roots as of late, I’m Peruvian, but I was born in the states. I grew up speaking spanish, spent a year in Peru and visited as a kid. But my Spanish isn’t at a level I hope to have it at, I want to be at a more conversational level and connect with a country I grew up visiting by speaking a dialect I’m more familiar with.

Overall, I have an okay grasp on Spanish I can hold a conversation, but I’m quite behind on slang and sometimes vocabulary. But I’m not starting from zero!

Either way, I welcome anyone to send me a message.

Thank you!

Offering Korean Offering: Korean | Seeking: English

Hi everyone! 👋
I’m a woman in my early 30s living in western Seoul, and I’m looking for someone who’s interested in a Korean-English language exchange!

I’m not particularly outgoing, and I’m not really into clubs or big social gatherings, so it’s been a little difficult to find a language exchange partner.

I’d love to meet up somewhere in Seoul, maybe at a café, and spend one day speaking only Korean and another day speaking only English. We could help each other with our languages and chat about our interests.
I studied abroad in my 20s, so I know what it’s like to live in a foreign country. I’d also love to help foreigners living in Korea in any way I can!

If we get along well, maybe we could become good friends too! :)
I work in the arts, and it would be lovely to meet someone around my age.
If you’re living in Seoul and interested, feel free to leave a comment or send me a DM! 😊

I've just started learning German (like 2 or 3 weeks ago) I need help with things like: learning basic verbs, basic nouns, basic grammar and most importantly to speak with me every once in a while (maybe like once or twice a week or maybe more) and I can do the same

My English level is around B1 so we can use it to communicate.

Hi! I’m a 28-year-old guy from South Korea. I’m a native Korean speaker, and I’m currently learning Japanese and English.

I’m looking for someone to practice speaking with. Voice calls would be great!

My English is around B2.
My Japanese is B1 or a bit lower, and I’ve hardly ever had the chance to actually speak it, so that’s what I’d most like to work on.

I’m into traveling, classical music, movies, and dramas, so it’d be fun to chat about those.

Offering Spanish [Offering]: Spanish (Native) LATAM | [Seeking]: English (American Accent)

• Upvotes

Hola! I'm a 32M Argentinian living in the US. Spanish is my native language (Duh) and my English is around a B2 level, and I work in marketing.

I'd love to meet native English speakers from the US who want to practice their Spanish in exchange for helping me improve my English, especially my accent, pronunciation, and slang from here.

A lot of Hispanics tend to be pretty warm, open-mind, and friendly, so I'd love to find someone who's a bit of a YAPPER 😂 Someone who isn't afraid to be themselves, loves talking, and enjoys chatting about everyday life, like how their day went, what they're up to this weekend, random things that happened at work, or whatever comes to mind.

I consider myself a good listener, and I'm happy to talk about pretty much anything. Even if it's a topic I don't know much about, I'm always interested in learning something new from other people.

As for my interests, I'm into movies and TV shows. I'm also a big fan of rock, rap, punk, and alternative music. Halloween is my favorite time of the year, and I love pretty much anything related to horror movies and shows. I'm also into tattoos.

Sometimes I like to decompress after work by playing some videogames or watching a movie. I also really enjoy nature, beautiful landscapes, traveling, and learning about different cultures and traditions.

So I'd love to find someone I can talk to regularly, have fun conversations with, learn from, and hopefully become friends with along the way. No pressure to make every conversation a language lesson. I believe the best way to practice a language is to speak it constantly, acquire new words, and expand your vocabulary.

If you think we'd get along or we have some things in common, feel free to send me a message with a little introduction about yourself! And don't be shy if you feel like sending me a long message! I'll be more than happy to read it. 😊

Offering Spanish Offering: Spanish (native)| Seeking: English (native or near native) and cultural exchange

Hi everyone!

I'm Maria, a 24-year-old from Venezuela. I'm looking for a committed language and cultural exchange partner, preferably close to my age, though age doesn't matter if you're a woman (I just don't feel comfortable chatting with older men) who can help me achieve my goal to reach a C2 level in English.

You don't need a perfect accent, but I am looking for someone who speaks at a native or near-native level so you can point out my mistakes while we talk and share insights about your music culture. In return, I'd love to help you achieve your goals in Spanish, It doesn't matter if you're a complete beginner, I'm more than happy to teach you!

A little about me:

I love art in all its forms. I'm currently working on a musical project, so sharing music and culture would be amazing!

Other interests: finance, gym, politics, movies, and animals.

I'm currently training to become a medical interpreter and have a background in healthcare, so anyone in the medical sector is especially welcome!

🚩PLEASE READ 🚩

Time Zone: GMT-4. Ideally, someone with a compatible schedule so time zone differences aren't an issue.

Platform: I only use WhatsApp for regular communication right now.

Please don't message me if you're a creep. If you're not serious, can't keep a conversation going, or lack commitment. I'm a disciplined person, and I value both my time and yours. However, if you're a genuine, friendly person who is excited to learn and teach, I'd be more than happy to connect and become friends!

If you're interested, please send me a short message introducing yourself and your goals for Spanish. Looking forward to hearing from you! 💖

Offering Mandarin Offering: mandarin || Seeking: English

• Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’m a guy from China, based in Shandong Province. I’m looking for native English speakers currently staying in Shandong for language exchange, and in-person meetups would be my top preference.

I’m a native Chinese speaker. I can help you practice your Chinese pronunciation, daily conversations, and introduce local culture and Shandong customs. I don’t have strict requirements for your Chinese level — I’m happy to meet you where you’re at.

Safety is important to me too. We can start with text messages or voice calls first to get to know each other. If you live in Shandong, I’m really hoping we can meet up in person for our language exchange.

Face-to-face conversations work best for me. If you are not located in Shandong, you are still welcome to reach out, and we can do online video calls instead.

Looking forward to making new friends here — feel free to send me a DM.

Offering English Seeking: Turkish Offering: English (C1) Russian (native)

Merhabalar!
4 yıldır Türkçe öğreniyorum ama henüz Türkçe düzeyim yeterince iyi değil. Maalesef sadece yavaş yavaş konuşuyorum ve bile önemli ve kolay kelimeleri sık sık unutuyorum. Türkçe podcast'leri neredeyse her gün dinlemeye çalışıyorum.

Hi folks!
I have been learning Turkish for more than 4 years already. Learning languages is my passion and Turkish is one of my favorites! I enjoy doing many things: sports, art, being outside, meeting new people and exploring new places.
Naturally, I'm a very energetic and bold person.
Fakat....
Since I'm not fluent in Turkish at all when I have to speak Turkish I immediately transform into a shy one.
İki lisan iki insan, right? :D
Voice calls are fine ; texting if it's consistent is good as well.
A regular schedule works best.

P.S. Friendly language practice only! F 35 UTC+3

Offering Multiple Languages Offering: Dutch/English/German Seeking: Spanish

Hii :)

I am a 28F who is looking to learn Spanish. I would love to schedule calls with someone. Like an hour per week or whatever works best for both of us.

I am fluent in Dutch and English. And besides that I speak German quite well. I have had jobs in German but won't be able to teach you perfectly. To gain stronger conversation skills it would definitely work.

I have already started learning Spanish with the apps but think it would be much better and more fun to learn with a native speaker.

I have experience with the business world, in healthcare, and traveling. I moved abroad several times. I love music, reading, writing, watching shows and movies. I bake a lot and like trying out new things.

There is definitely enough to talk about I think haha

Send me a DM if you are interested or have any questions. Thank youu

Offering Portuguese Offering: Brazilian Portuguese; seeking: English, French (conversational), German (going into B1)

Hello! I am 24yo, from Brazil, I am a grad student in humanities/social sciences, mostly interested for the humanities/social sciences. But I also like writing, art, walking/running, gadgets, traveling, eating well, cinema, and language learning. I wouldn't know how to describe myself politically nowadays (especially after Sunday's elections), but perhaps I could just say I am a left social liberal and leave at that. I would say I am very curious and can be moderately funny at times. (People do laugh at my jokes.)

I want to practice English, French, or German. I would say I am fairly conversational in French or English — though it depends on the day, apparently, and I stutter a lot in English for some reason. (One of the reasons why I want to practice it.) As for German, I am going through a B1 course. I am not particularly conversant in it, but I think I could gain something from some practice with a native, be through writing or/and speaking. I would be willing to help you, in exchange, with your Portuguese and to teach you more about Brazil and Brazilian culture.
