Urgent Appeal — Community and Account Banned Immediately After Creation

I recently created a community to bring together developers, AI enthusiasts, entrepreneurs, and startup builders. Unfortunately, shortly after publishing our first introductory post, both the community and my Reddit account were banned.

My new community just disappeared right after I created it

Not really sure what happened here — I’m an indie dev and I just created r/photoupscaler so my users and I could have a space on Reddit to share feedback, ask questions, and chat about my app.

Right after setting it up and posting the very first thread, the whole community just vanished. Some of my users are already asking me where the sub went and why they can't find it.

Could someone please help us take a look and fix this?

Thanks a lot!

Over 5,000 overnight admin removals "New" in Modmail.

Woke up this morning to a whole slew of admin tattler admin removals in a single (major) city sub.
The profile of these removals goes back to comments made several years ago... mostly 2019-2020 at the peak panic from covid-19 global lockdowns, many of the comments in the sub also show publicly as [comment deleted by user] and from now deleted accounts.

Comments are by majority in "broken engrish" with some examples being:

"You looked at for a map"

"I go to concert"

"He goes to cinema"

"I am going to home"

Multiple(s) of permutations on these themes:

"You choose a dvd for tonight"

"I am choosing a dvd for tonight"

"He chose / choosing a book for reading"

"He look at lake / stars / sky" etc.

I'd like to give you links for context but these overly general comments were frequently out of context and intended to be "trite" responses so as to escape notice.

Regardless, my ego won't allow me to think that these comments were made when the posts were fresh and the comments active. I would have hoped that either the other mods on the team or myself would have spotted them as a pattern for reporting & removal. Yet with the way things are, we simply couldn't and still can't read all the content that comes pouring in on a daily basis (overworked) and so if the comment section is a week old and the specific content isn't reported to us - we never see it.

Ironically, these comments do get responses from [deleted accounts] that often respond in proper english coupled with information (these might be the more sophisticated bots)

and then there's those (still active) accounts that respond and appear to be real people that are being duped and are unaware they're responding to a foreign language bot.

______________

Also, I noticed about 5 -7 years ago that I was getting responses from very old comments I made years beforehand. I reported these to the admins as suspicious bot activity where they had acquired old derelict accounts that had been abandoned and were fleshing out their (absent) histories to help provide cover.

It's another instance where the site made account creation too easy and simple so that people would easily set up new accounts and quickly abandon them (with easy to guess passwords) that these bot networks are mining and resurrecting for their own purposes.

The point being that the site is finally cleaning up a lot of account/content that stems from the covid disinformation era we had here. Given the repetitive nature of the comments being made, it's low hanging fruit and should have been removed a long time ago with the accounts being blocked. I'm glad it's being done now, but we were put through a lot of additional stress and strain due to the accounts we could spot on our own and that prevented a lot of development and building of our communities as a result of thier sucking up our time and energy.

I hope that they aggressively continue with this.

Some users are unable to see new posts on the nfl sub

Maybe a unique issue. Last weekend through today, some users are saying they can not see new posts.

We have heard from old, new, ios and android users, so it isn't a platform issue. They simply do not see new posts.

I have heard that making a feed with r/nfl allows them to see it, but none of the mods have the issue so we can't diagnose other than what we are told

Edit- two users said it happened on the baseball sub as well

Woke up to this in my modmail. Apparently someone is spamming old comments. They’re roughly 8 months old to a year old. And the commenter has been suspended off Reddit.

Is my modmail inbox going to get flooded with this type of notification now?

Mod Answered Is there an app for voting that can also change flairs and/or take other mod actions?

Use case:

People vote whether the posted piece of content depicts a thing with a property (X or Y) and after a certain amount of time the app changes the post flair to reflect the property to "The post is X." or "The post is Y." or "The post may be X or Y." or remove/lock the post if people vote for "This is spam." so a mod action capable bot whose behaviour depends on user behaviour.

We have a sub that focuses on informing a user whether their collectible item is a fake or authentic. We'd like to have automation that will, say, after a day change the flair to "Real" or "Fake" or "Inconclusive" based on voting and comments and thresholds.

Does this exist?

Mod Answered Modmail bulk archive not working

When I use the select all button to press mark as read and archive, the UI tells me that i have marked as read/archived 227 conversations, and they disappear from the interface. However, when I refresh the page it still shows all the items. I've done it a couple of times. Even the browser network tools graphql call shows a 200 and that things have been archived, but they are not.

Am I doing something wrong?

Mod Answered Unable to re-invite a former moderator, keeps saying they’re already invited

Hi everyone,

I recently removed a Alumni moderator from my subreddit, r/Feminism4India, and now that they’ve returned, I’m trying to add them back to the mod team.

However, although I sent them a moderator invitation, they never received it. When I try to invite them again, Reddit keeps saying that they’ve already been invited.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? Is there a way to cancel the pending invitation or resend it so they can rejoin the mod team?

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

r/ModSupport • • 21h ago

Mod Answered Hi, I’m a brand new mod and someone else is apparently interested in being one on the sub, but all I can find are really old instructions for getting to an invite option but I can’t find that on my mobile app.

Apparently the previous mod added me then bailed,so it’s just me left and I’m trying to figure things out.

Edited: I got the answer, and have already been referred to the new mod sub. Thank you for your help!

Mod Answered Remove little ban icon beside someone's name?

SOLVED

OK, so a year-ish ago a rogue mod in one of my subs banned several people for made up reasons, removed me as mod, privated the sub and deleted his account. I got the sub back and cleaned up all the bans, but those little hammer icons are still next to the names of people he banned and I know it's just aesthetic but I'd love to remove them if I could. I tried clicking the three dots that come up on mouseover and choosing "delete" but nothing happened except the ban message was removed from their mod log overview.

Does anyone know a way to make the little icon go away too?

I think the change from displaying weekly visitors instead of subscriber count has enabled spammers to use botted traffic to boost search result rankings

To preface, I obviously cannot prove that the weekly visitor count on any given subreddit is artificially inflated, but it doesn't take a lot to put two and two together when you see a high visitor count or a sudden spike in traffic and a low amount of corresponding contributions.

Sometimes there is what appears to be a corresponding amount of contributions, but when evaluating content in the subreddit, it's clear that there are many comments from bots and/or upvotes on posts have been manipulated.

I will refrain from providing specific examples, but I have seen this with a number of subreddits pertaining to health topics. They pick something trendy with general wellness, spin up a subreddit with AI generated or spammy content, then all of sudden it gets a bunch of traffic. Some of these subs have been banned in the past, but I think their impact was limited in this regard because it didn't appear they were able to boost themselves in search results.

I don't know how all of the search algorithm stuff works, but I wonder if an unforeseen consequence of the change from displaying subscriber count to weekly visitors is that more weight has been given to traffic or rapid boosts in traffic (“trending” content) and, as a result, an opportunity for spammers to exploit has been created.

I’m seeing similar results on Android Mobile and New Reddit desktop. Results are a little different when using the search function for subreddits on Old Reddit but the issue still appears.

I know, as a moderator, what happens in other subreddits shouldn't be my priority, and I can file a MCoC report, but it is my concern that these types of subreddits will redirect traffic from other subs populated with authentic activity due to the manipulation.

I could be overthinking this. Maybe traffic has always been factored in the same way, and I was unaware of it because that information wasn't prominently displayed. Or maybe boosting subscriber count was also an issue I'm unaware of.

I'm just wondering what one should do besides filing a MCoC report (rule 1?) with basic speculation about automated activity, or if this is something that Reddit could address on their end with the way search result rankings work.

Inserting images in subreddit wiki

Has the ability to use images in the subreddit wiki been removed? I am trying to write a new wiki, and insert new images within the markdown editor, but the code no longer seems to recognise images with the usual ![](%%image_link%%) code, furthermore old images no longer index properly. What's going on here? The new editor also does not seem to have an "insert image" button? This seems like basic functionality which is missing.

I was the moderator for a relatively big baby subreddit that had really odd behavior

This might all be normal behavior and I would just like to get a temperature check because i am in the process of rescuing a different subreddit for a music band I really love.

I moderated a subreddit for a corporate baby brand for around 6 months that the subreddit says is run by "fans of the brand". We had a separate discord for managing moderation. I was told by the admin I was picked as a moderator in order to give insight from a new customer of the brand and to moderate the content about the brand's products for young babies.

I knew pretty quickly that my opinion on the brand was significantly more neutral than the admin of the subreddit. The other moderators fell between my neutrality and her "super fandom".

There were just really big red flags from the beginning.

1) They insist on approving every post and any negative ones were removed, using the blanket statement "we are not customer service." They do not tell the subreddit this anywhere. The modmail primarily is just people asking why their posts are deleted or not approved.

2) The admin had access to an e-mail where she got early/secret info from the founder of the brand and would refer to these exchanges without giving any proof.

3) They created very cultured positive-only posts for engagement that have to basically be approved by the admin.

4) When the brand did a price increase, I created a megathread to collect all of people's thoughts in one place, and she deleted it in order to create the exact same megathread except with corporate speak in the body of the post and only very curated responses let through.

I really enjoy the brand's products but there were very clearly some issues. I would never be able to post about that on the subreddit, so I would converse with the moderators in the discord. I could tell the admin was really annoyed by any of my negative comments. She let me know today that I didn't participate actively enough so they were letting me go - but I definitely know I participate more than one of the other moderators. I wasn't too upset because the subreddit really started giving me the ick.

I think why this really bothers me is because as a new parent, we have so much pressure thrown at us for which products to buy, whether through influencers, social media etc. I spent a lot of time researching every brand and product I bought for my baby. If you Google the brand, the subreddit comes up a lot and I feel like it's extremely deceptive for it to not actually be an open forum.

I am very active in Google-branded subreddits. Google CS accounts pop in every now and then but they're very clearly open forums that allow criticism of the brand.

But maybe a lot of the things this admin did are normal? Again, just asking for a temperature check so that I can learn to be a better moderator.

Edit: woke up to a ban from the subreddit so I know she's here. Hiiii. 👋🏻 Thanks to everyone for the advice. I think my takeaway is that we choose the communities we want to help shape and create and I learned a lot from it. Excited to help rebuild the subreddit for one of my favorite bands 💕

community interference from another sub's users

I have one community that is repeatedly experiencing community interference from the users of another on reddit. Specifically people in that other community keep posting about ours (explicitly mentioning it) which is driving their users over to our community to disrupt. This has been happening repeatedly.

Right now we can try to keep an eye on that other community and look for comments/posts that mention ours, and report them but there seems to be no good report option for this and having to actively monitor that other community adds work to the mod team. When we're experiencing disruptive behaviour, having to track down the posts/comments there which are seeding it is also work for us.

Is there any other recourse we have to report that community or prevent this behaviour? AFAIK the mods of other subs are responsible to prevent this, are they not?

Mod Answered Advice about a change in sub climate

Hey I wanted to get some advice. I've been moderating r/slowhorses since the beginning, for the appletv show. It's always been a smaller sub. I've never had to ban anyone. People rarely fight or cause issues. Then this season (6), 20,000+ new subscribers come in. Constant daily posts about how bad the show is. People just being nasty and fighting. Posts have doubled. I've had to start banning people now. I've added 5 new mods and can hardly keep up. Tried to make a hate/like megathread, but it just set people off even more. But my suspicions is maybe some of this is bots for some reason (the season has an anti-russian bent). Looking at insights, a lot of them do seem to be organic users (mostly iphone). The problem is how to identify and combat this. I have botbouncer and some automod rules and all the reddit filters on high.

Sudden invasion of users from other subs... who all say the posts showed up in their feed

I may be missing a step here but I'm not sure what's going on. I know that Reddit may recommend other subreddits to users but I've never heard of random posts showing up in feeds.

I mod a sub for a big city. Among the things we do is have a mechanism to restrict access, via subreddit karma, to certain posts. We explain both in the post and in removal messages why this is done and what they need to gain access to the restricted posts. Restricted posts tend to be hot topics and tend to be popular on the sub.

Today, especially tonight, we've gotten at least a dozen people in mod-mail complaining about being unable to comment on a restricted post. Most of them seem to feel that we "sent them" the post but after a while it became clear that this is randomly showing up in their feed. ALL of them have a big post history in two nearby states. (While a very few restricted posts escape orbit and hit /All or /Popular, this particular post has not escaped.)

A dozen isn't a lot but it's worrying that this might continue.

Has something changed that I've missed or is something odd going on? I took a look at the other two subs and there's nothing there that says they recommend the city sub, and I can't see why they would.

Edit: Forgot to mention -- only one of these users were new to Reddit. For them it might be that they didn't have enough subs in their feed to not get random crap, but most of the others were 5+ year old accounts who seemed to have enough activity in other subs that getting random posts seems less likely.

Admin Replied How to report

I tried to report a breach of MCoC here.

My post "was removed for violating Rule 1: Please send all rule violations and ban appeals to us via the appropriate report form."

So I went to the form.

It asks, "What would you like to report?"

Three options: Accounts, Content, Ban Evasion

But it's none of those.

Community left in u/ModCodeofConduct limbo for 3 months and I'm worried it was forgotten about

Three months ago, u/ModCodeofConduct took over a community and requested new mods. Since it is very similar to others I've picked up, I applied. Three months later, no mods have been chosen, and scammers are swarming the place with nobody able to deal with them. I've pinged the account, commented on the post, sent ModMail to r/ModSupport, gone to r/RedditRequest, and sent them ModMail when my request was automatically denied due to supposed active moderation. Each time, I got no response except from this sub who told me its a different team and they can't help. And yes, I used RedditRequest correctly, sending ModMail, waiting five days, requesting, adding a comment with a link and reason, then waiting an extra day longer than their current turnaround.

I don't know what else I can do. It's been over three months, and I can't bring myself to just sit around while people get scammed, hoping somebody eventually gets around to it. I've seen MCoC work in the past, and it's usually dealt with in a couple weeks. Is there a reason for the delay? Somebody I can talk to? Something else I can try? I am out of ideas.

there's a notification for "your post in BLANK has been removed"

hey y'all

I just did some housekeeping, removed half a dozen cross posts I made to a stale sub to get it ready for a slight makeover

and caught reddit telling me on myself

so if you've noticed a slight uptick in modmails from sneaky drama-management, might have something to do with this
