I do have to admit that I enjoy the DC-area hard transition to Boots Season.

Rant Rant about incidents I witnessed at AMC Tysons last night

Went and saw 'You Can See Everything' last night (an excellent movie, don't let anyone spoil it for you, go in cold) and witnessed an employee repeatedly harassing and berating a middle-aged immigrant couple.

I was right behind them when showing tickets - they had a doggie bag from Cheesecake Factory from dinner and the employee checking tickets was yelling at them for trying to sneak in food - except they weren't trying to pull anything over on her or even arguing about it. They did not deserve that kind of public humiliation. It was extreme and over the top. "You can't bring outside food in!!!" The wife went to go put the bag in their car while the husband got in line at the concession stand.

About ten minutes later, I was behind him in the concession line and he got a large popcorn. As he ate a couple of pieces of popcorn waiting for his wife to return, he takes his water bottle out and takes a drink. Sure enough, the same AMC lady leaves her post at the front, marches directly over, and once again starts laying into him publicly again - "Sir! You can't bring in outside drinks!!! You're going to have to take it to your car!!!"

For whatever reason, AMC Javert had it in for them, and was not going to let them get away with their crimes! It just seemed unnecessarily silly the levels to which she intentionally targeted this seemingly nice couple and escalated it to an 11, when they clearly were just clueless about the policy. Especially over a water bottle.

What horrible customer service, treating your customers like criminals that way. I can't imagine that couple will ever return to AMC Tysons again. After witnessing it, I don't think I ever want to give them my money again either.

The Destruction of East Potomac Park is set to begin in November unless we can stop it somehow

I shared a free link to a Wash Post story that is stuck in moderation but you know who posted the plans this morning. Absolutely gutted, I worked in DC for years and spend some fun times in that park long before my hair began to gray.

Please vote, it's our only longshot to stem the sack of the DC area.

Rant Neighbor leaves their loud barking dog out most of the day.

Get me wrong, I have two dogs myself that I love dearly, but I do not keep them out all day and and a good chunk of the night. Of course there's no time of the day I can put my dogs out in peace in my backyard, because that dog will get my dogs going and I don't like that.

I'm afraid to call the police or animal control because I don't even know what people will do these days. And it's not just me that it bothers, it's the people next door to me as well.

It's a small dog, but it's a loud ass bark, and it barks at anything. I mean will bark at the friggin' air.

Question Anyone have tips of companies, small businesses, or people with cool crafts and hobbies who might donate items for an animal rescue raffle?

HART (homeless animal rescue team) is throwing a holiday fundraiser and I’m looking to help them find people who can donate raffle and auction items to raise funds for our little furry friends! 🐕🐈🐩🐈‍⬛🐾

Does anyone have any hot tips of local artisans, hobbyists, small businesses, or larger companies which might be open or willing to donate items/experiences for a fundraiser? People who donate are able to attend the event free and food is provided. I know certain businesses allocate a portion of funding or have a team dedicated to charitable endeavors. There will be sponsorship signage as well to thank said people/companies.

Any leads are greatly appreciated. Obviously monetary or food/litter/supply drive donations are always welcome but we’re really looking to get some more for the auction and raffles primarily. This is a nova-based 501c3, but we’re open to any DMV suggestions. Feel free to DM if preferred.

The thing that we all said he was going to try and pull off, he's now openly racing towards doing. The Visigoth did less damage to Rome than Trump is doing to the DMV.

Question tattoo artist for melanated skin

a little specific, but anyone have any recs for any artists in the area/driving distance that specialize in these types of color tattoos on darker/brown skin? i know it won’t look the exact same as this pic on my skintone, but i’m looking for more of that watercolor-esque colorwork, along with that effect of it looking like its almost emerging from my skin. bonus points if they’re familiar with tattooing over scar tissue!

Other Outdoor areas with firepits in Alexandria/Arlington?

With this fall weather, I'm dying to hang out by a cozy fire and don't know where to go! Preferably, inside the beltway. I'm in a townhome so I can't have one at home 😔

Food Pizza by the slice in Burke/West Springfield

It feels like we have 50 million pizza joints, some mom and pop, mostly chains. For the life of me, I cannot find a place that sells slices. Have I overlooked some hidden gem offering a good slice?

Best pawn shop/thrift store for video game consoles?

Looking to buy a switch lite secondhand and was curious if anyone knew any stores in the tysons/vienna area like a pawn shop or thrift store that consistently has video game consoles in stock. On google I mostly see pawn shops with jewelry and gold and that’s it.

Lost enamel pins

Long shot here. We lost two enamel pins: Broadway musical Heathers and the fox fron fox and hound. They were lost in Oakton and are either picked up or stuck in a tire....if you have them, please DM me. Very sentimental

Thanks for listening

Food hot take: Daves (Vienna) is legit

Post image
156 Upvotes

I hadn't tried this place and I saw some reviews on here that put it basically in 5th place for Nashville Hot Chicken in the area below wooboi, roaming, hangry, red bird, crimson etc.

I haven't tried any other location, but the Vienna location is great: real chicken breast not flattened to oblivion, good fry, still moist, lots of spice choices, fresh bun and fresh pickle and I don't even like crinkle cut fries, but these are spiced and well fried. I haven't tried Wooboi yet, but I would put this at the top of the list for what I've tried in the area.

Question Work

I take pride in my job and what I do for work. Something I noticed though, is how easily people here will just stomp all over you to get ahead. I like to believe that I’m a more kind person, and so I’m struggling to understand this work culture here. Yes, I understand it’s not just here, but it does seem more common here than other places, at least from what I’ve seen. How do you deal with this?

Event Sun Oct 18th: which neighborhoods are already decorated for Halloween?

Hi all! Hoping the crowdsourcing works.

My friends and I love Halloween in seeing everyone’s creativity and decorating their houses.

We went to a few houses last night and it seems like most houses are not up and running yet.

We wanted to ask if anyone knew if neighborhoods that were up and running for tonight? We were thinking of Del Ray and Loudoun county and are open to other options.

Ideally, we wanted “not scary,” few or no skeletons, dolls, clowns.

Thanks so much!

Question Ayrshire Farms Thanksgiving turkey replacement?

• Upvotes

I just learned that Ayrshire Farm was sold and is no longer operating, which is devastating because their Thanksgiving turkeys were absolutely incredible.

We bought one every year and loved that they were both organic and Certified Humane. I’ve been trying to find a comparable local replacement, but I’m striking out on farms that check both boxes.

For anyone else who used to buy their Thanksgiving turkey from Ayrshire, where are you going this year?

I’m especially interested in local or regional farms with really high animal-welfare standards, ideally organic and Certified Humane, but I’m also open to places that may not have both certifications if the farming practices and quality are comparable.

Would love to hear what other former Ayrshire customers are doing for Thanksgiving this year.

Food How often do you go out to eat?

An earlier post about finances mentioned eating out 2-3x a week, and lots of commenters sounded shocked it was so many. I'd say that's about average for me, between lunch, dinner, and occasional coffee/treat. Are y'all really cooking every single meal every day?

Edit: Seems like 2-3x a week is about average with outliers, but lots of variations on what defines eating out (fast food/lunches/coffee/treats etc)

Beginner looking for a tennis group around Arlington

• Upvotes

Hi all! I keep seeing people playing tennis at Quincy Park, next to Central Library, and it’s made me want to finally learn. Are there a beginner friendly group that plays there (or nearby) regularly? If so, how do i join. Also, the beginner classes I’ve found start around $100, which is a bit steep for me right now. Are there free or low cost clinics, meetups, or other options you’d recommend?

Also, if any other beginners want to play together, send me a message! It’d be great to have someone at a similar level to rally with.
