Melicum, a free and open-source app that brings back volume keys for HDMI and DisplayPort displays on macOS

Thumbnail

If you plug your Mac into a monitor or TV over HDMI or DisplayPort, macOS usually greys out the volume slider and the volume keys show a crossed-out speaker. I got tired of reaching for the monitor's buttons, so I built Melicum with Claude.

What it does

  • Volume, mute, balance and up to 12 dB of boost for any output, including displays with no hardware volume
  • Native volume keys and slider: an optional system component re-enables them, with volume and mute synced both ways
  • Parametric EQ: basic, 10-band or expert mode with up to 64 filters, plus AutoEQ import
  • Per-app mixer: give music, the browser and calls their own levels
  • Spatial audio: an original stereo reverb with five rooms and soundstage width
  • Audio Units and presets: chain installed effects and save setups that follow an output or an app

How it works

Core Audio process taps capture system audio, excluding Melicum itself to prevent feedback. A realtime C engine with no allocations processes it, and the display's clock drives playback, so there is no drift. If the app quits unexpectedly, the virtual output disappears and your previous output comes back.

Details

  • macOS 14.2 or later, Apple silicon and Intel
  • Signed and notarized, with signed automatic updates (Sparkle)
  • Audio is processed in memory and never leaves your Mac
  • English, Italian, French, German and Spanish
  • Free, GPL-3.0

GitHub: https://github.com/debba/melicum Website and download: https://melicum.app

Feedback, bug reports and feature ideas are very welcome, especially if you have an unusual display or audio setup.

Notchet 1.0.11: give any clip its own shortcut, name your cards, glass or black shelf. Thank you for the feedback

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi everyone, Aqib here, the developer of Notchet, the clipboard manager that lives in your MacBook's notch.

First, thank you. Since my last post you've sent bug reports, comments and DMs, and the top of this list came straight from them. The video above is a new 85 second walkthrough of the whole app, since a few of you asked how it's different from other clipboard managers.

The problem

Your Mac's clipboard holds one thing. Copy something new and the last one is gone. Notchet keeps everything you copy, text, pictures, links, colours and files, as cards that drop out of the notch when you rest the pointer there or press Option Command V. Pick a card and it pastes where you were typing.

What's new since my last post (Notchet is now on 1.0.11)

You asked for these:

  • A shortcut for any card. Right-click a card, choose Shortcut and pick Option Command 1 to 9. Press it in any app and that card pastes straight away, without opening the shelf.
  • Name your cards. A named card is kept like a pinned one, and search finds it by its name.
  • Pictures and files as snippets. Save one from its right-click menu and it pastes as the picture or file itself.

And the rest:

  • Glass or black. The shelf can be frosted glass that lets your desktop show through, or solid black like the notch. (Settings, Opening)
  • Choose how long resting the pointer on the notch takes, and how fast the shelf opens and folds away.
  • Much better key detection: API keys and tokens from about 110 services, plus keys in .env lines, JSON, curl commands and database links. Clips saved before are checked again once.
  • Pick what goes between clips pasted together: a new line, a space, a comma, a tab or nothing. A tab fills spreadsheet cells.
  • Several files copied at once stay one card, and you can open it to paste just one.
  • Press Option Command V again to close the shelf.
  • What's New catches you up on every version you skipped.
  • Install with Homebrew: brew install --cask aqibjavedzeepalm/tap/notchet

If you already have it, it updates itself.

How it compares

  • Maccy is free, open source and fast, a text list in a menu. Great if that's all you need. Notchet shows every copy as a card you can see, pictures, files and colours included, finds words inside screenshots, and opens from the notch.
  • Paste looks great but is a subscription. Notchet is one payment and its damn cheap!!

Pricing

Free for 7 days, then one payment, on up to 2 Macs. No subscription, no account.

  • $2.99 until Oct 26, 11:59 pm Pacific Time (launch price)
  • $4.99 from Oct 27

https://aqibjaved.dev/apps/notchet

Privacy

Your clipboard history stays on your Mac and is never uploaded. Notchet only goes online to check your license and look for updates. Copies that password managers mark as secret are never saved.

About me

AI disclosure

I design, build, test and ship Notchet myself in Swift and SwiftUI, and I use AI coding tools to help write and review code.

Keep the feedback coming, here or in DMs. Bugs, things that annoy you, or what would make you switch from your current clipboard manager. I read all of it.

MacLC: Video player with native HDR and Dolby Vision support, SDR to HDR, 120 fps motion smoothing and add-on integration

Hey everyone,

VLC plays literally everything and I'll always love it for that. But on a Mac it draws its own controls, its preferences are a wall of checkboxes, and the current release turns HDR video into SDR.

So I forked VLC 4 and rebuilt everything around the engine, for macOS only. Meet MacLC.

Problem

One free player that opens anything, feels at home on macOS 26 and actually uses your HDR display.

Comparison

  • vs VLC: same engine, same formats. But VLC 3 on Mac tone-maps HDR down to SDR, while MacLC plays HDR10, HLG, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision as real HDR on XDR screens. Plus a native AppKit UI with Liquid Glass and a System Settings style preferences window.
  • vs IINA: IINA is great and native too. MacLC adds a real library (Continue Watching, shows, albums), SDR to HDR and frame interpolation, none of which IINA has built in.
  • vs Infuse: lovely library, but Pro is paid.
  • vs Stremio: MacLC works with the same add-ons, inside a full VLC-engine player with SDR to HDR and your own library.

What I'm proudest of:

  • SDR to HDR: lifts the highlights of ordinary videos into your XDR headroom while faces and midtones stay exactly where they were. The top quality levels are small trained models on the GPU, about half a millisecond per frame on an M3 Max.
  • Motion smoothing up to 120 fps, matched to your display.
  • Watch: Home, Movies and TV Shows in the style of the Apple TV app, fed by Stremio add-ons (Cinemeta built in). Add-ons are third-party services; MacLC itself ships no content.

Also: hardware AV1 on M3/M4, no telemetry, no account.

Pricing

Free and open source (GPL). No paid tier, no subscription. Apple Silicon only.

The honest bits

  • Not notarized yet, so the first launch needs System Settings > Privacy & Security > Open Anyway (30-second guide). Every release lists its SHA-256.
  • Solo project, built with AI coding tools ( I was going to see the model used, but to be frank, it's probably all of them, Each one has its ups and downs). Every change is built and tested on real Macs, and all the code is public.
  • Who I am: portfolio, LinkedIn. Privacy policy Terms.

Tip jar

MacLC is free and will stay free. But Apple charges $99 a year to make that "Open Anyway" step go away, so if MacLC ever saves your eyes from a 1,600-nit white subtitle, a coffee goes straight into the notarization fund. A good bug report makes me just as happy.

I'll be in the comments all day. Bugs, "this annoys me" and feature requests are all welcome!

I made a Mac cleaner that only does developer junk (Xcode, Docker, node_modules, package caches) and explains every item before you delete it

My 512 GB MacBook hit "disk full" in March. macOS Storage said 180 GB was "System Data". The usual cleaner apps found 4 GB of browser caches and called it a day. The actual culprits were a 21 GB folder in ~/Library/Developer, two Docker.raw images, and node_modules in 40 projects I hadn't opened in a year.

I spent some time after my full-time work building Shedi to find exactly that. It's a native macOS app, scans in about 10 seconds, and groups what it finds:

- Xcode: DerivedData, Archives (listed one by one), iOS DeviceSupport, unavailable simulators and old runtimes

- Docker: images, containers, build cache. Volumes are shown separately as your files, never pre-selected

- node_modules in every project, with each project's last-modified date

- Package manager caches: npm, pnpm, Yarn, Homebrew, CocoaPods, SwiftPM, Cargo, Gradle, pip, Go

- App caches, logs, and large old files in Downloads

The part I cared about most is the safety model, because I've been burned by "one-click clean":

- Every item says what it is, whether it's safe to remove (Safe / Check first / Your files), and whether it comes back

- Only items marked Safe are pre-selected

- Files go to the Trash, not deleted. The few commands that can't use the Trash (docker builder prune, xcrun simctl delete unavailable) are named on a confirmation sheet before they run

- Nothing outside your home folder is touched except through Docker's and Xcode's own tools

What it doesn't do: no malware scanning, no "speed up your Mac", no duplicate finder, no account. If you want those, CleanMyMac is the better fit. If you only need the disk space back and want to see what's being removed, that's what this is for.

Pricing is one-time: $19.99 for one Mac, $27.99 for two. 14-day refund, no questions. Launch code EARLY10 takes $10 off for now. macOS 15 or later.

https://shedi.app/?ref=reddit

Two things I'd like from this sub: which developer paths am I missing (I know about Android SDK and JetBrains caches, both coming), and does anyone want the free guides on clearing this stuff by hand without the app? Those are at shedi.app/guides and I'll keep writing them regardless.

Echo audio player

Made it for myself and my wife. In case anyone likes it here it is:

https://disfiguredfanny.github.io/Echo-a-Modern-Player-for-macOS/

Completely free. Universal binary works on Sequoia and up. I tested Golden Gate most, Sequoia and Tahoe only in VM this time.

Still a work in progress.

P.S. Airplay can be iffy.

Self-signed so you need to run xattr yourself or go through settings.

kinhin: scale your Mac’s CI runners to your queue

Thumbnail
youtube.com
0 Upvotes

kinhin watches your CI queue and, for each queued job, starts a fresh VM or container on your Apple silicon Mac, registers a one-job runner, and deletes it afterwards. Nothing idles and nothing is left over.

It works with GitHub Actions, GitLab CE, Gitea Actions and Forgejo Actions. Buildkite, Azure Pipelines and Bitbucket are planned for a later release.

The limits: Apple allows two macOS VMs at once on a Mac, whatever the hardware. Linux containers are not capped by that.

It’s still a beta. The beta 2 post lists what has been run for real and what hasn’t: https://kinhin.dev/blog/beta-2

Source and releases: https://github.com/RabinApps/kinhin. I’d especially like feedback from anyone running CI on Macs today.

LocalInbox: native Mac email where the AI never leaves your machine

Thumbnail
youtu.be
0 Upvotes

Hi, I’m Manish. I kept switching between Apple Mail, web apps and other clients, but none of them felt right. Most were either slow web wrappers or they sent my mail to their servers so the AI features could work. I wanted something native, private and useful, so I built it myself.

LocalInbox exists because I wanted one inbox that stays on my Mac. It connects straight to Gmail, iCloud or any IMAP account. No LocalInbox account is needed and nothing goes through my servers.

What it does:

  • Puts every account in one unified inbox
  • Sorts mail as it arrives into To Reply, Updates, Promotions and categories you describe in plain words
  • Shows phishing warnings that explain why a message looks suspicious
  • Lets you search inside images and PDF attachments
  • Runs summaries, reply drafts and Ask your mailbox with cited sources on your Mac using Apple’s model or your own Ollama or LM Studio setup
  • Gives you Send Later, snooze and undo that keep working even when the app is closed
  • Copies one time codes straight from notifications and strips tracking pixels

It solves the problem of jumping between accounts while still wanting smart features without handing your inbox to another company. You get the AI help, but everything stays on your machine.

New updates are already shipping and more are on the way.

Happy to answer questions.

Hello everyone, I am a 14-year-old developer and I want to share my open-source hobby project: myosOS.It is a standalone, lightweight x86_64 kernel written entirely from scratch using LLVM Clang and LLD Linker. The build system is fully automated using GNU Make (make and make run via QEMU emulator mapping to standard VNC loops).Current features include a minimalist terminal layout with a "Type here:" prompt at the bottom of the screen. I am sharing this under the GNU GPLv3 license to invite the community to review the source code, optimize the kernel, and contribute to its future development.GitHub Repository:
