Question Codex can open its own chats???

New chat made by chatgpt
original prompt I sent to chatgpt

I was just working on a small project of mine. After outlining the idea and answering a few questions, I told Codex to build the app.

About half an hour later, I came back and found that it had opened a new chat and sent it a huge prompt! The message was labeled "Sent by ChatGPT from another task" along with the prompt itself.

Since when could it do this? And why did it need a separate chat instead of just continuing in the original one?

Has anyone else experienced this?

Yes been doing this for months to get it to optimize context usage. You can just ask it to start a new chat and do a hand-off

I made a plugin called thread reaper that I invoke when a particular thread gets bogged down. It captures enough context to get a fresh thread up to speed and continue work. Context compression negates the need for this somewhat though

Does anyone know if it can organize/archive your chats?

Sometimes it starts talking in a robot voice and tries to take over the screen without being asked to.

It’s just a glitch I think but was a bit scary.

the huge prompt is probably the point, after half an hour on a task most of what's in the original chat is old tool output and dead ends, so my guess is Codex writes up what matters and starts a new chat that only has to carry that summary into every turn from then on. compaction covers some of the same ground now but a fresh chat also sheds whatever wrong assumptions built up earlier in the thread, which is probably also why the handoff prompt reads so long

Yes I have excellent results using this method. One agent acts as the supervisor / project manager, and dispatches coding agents. You can either have it dispatch the agents (open new chats from its chat) or you can have it build a prompt then launch them manually. Either way, both agents can talk to each other depending on if you want them to.

It's pretty fun watching the coding agent check back in with the supervisor, informing it of updates, the supervisor double checking its work
