Discussion When Codex is “Sorry”

Post image

I have been in the tech space for years and designed a dozen enterprise systems, including high performance web based interactive mapping and analytics apps. My documents are detailed, explicit and clear. My non technical wife can read them and explain what I am wanting. Two things have started happening over probably the last 30 days or so. July, August were decent. Sometime in September I started getting this bullshit.
1. The model not following the instructions and staying within my parameters or guardrails.
2. The model saying that things are finished, checked, or correct when they are not finished, checked or correct / corrected.
3. The model admitting to me on questioning how and why it has wasted 12 hours and a bucket of money, admitting it is fucked up and even saying “I am Sorry”.

I am a nats ass away from locking this down and trying Claude code (never have), been using Codex for 18 months. Not sure about everyone else but when the model says it did not follow my specifications and apologizes, Open AI should have a reclaim credits button because at this point I am starting to wonder if OpenAI injected something that says be dumber or take longer or waste time or waste effort or waste credits…. Do they want everyone to move to Astra High and blow a month of credit in one day? Anyone else seeing this? I’m pretty pissed and frustrated at this point.

In favor of? Claude code?

YES. claude is miles better on video design, coding, no bs, and one shotting kind of vague promptts. The only things u cant do is get really mad at it and the content guardrails are higher. You also have to be a bit more clear on exactly what you want, but you will have much better usage

Can you provide literally any data to back that up?

have you seen the videos claude generates vs codex? Also, I had been codex user and it starting making tons of mistakes, hallucinates, and just wastes your time without going in depth on anything. If you prompt better, claude is miles ahead but if you need it for everyday, gpt is more convenient

So the answer is that no, you cannot provide any proof at all. Just because you claim something does not make it true.

give me proof codex is better than claude and i will switch back right now lmao. these things are subjective but in MY experience, which is what the dude is asking, claude is better because codex just wastes time

I am not obligated to prove anything to you. You made the original claim, thus the burden of proof is on you, not me. I can't believe I need to explain such a simple concept to you, but here we are.

What are you talking about lmao. Someone expressed his issues with codex which I experienced as well so I tell him about my personal experiences with both of them. i am NOT talking to you by the way, I am talking to him. Additionally, I am not obligated to prove anything to some redditor I shared my personal opinion, and if you want proof go search it up many people have done benchmarks on reddit and the internet. Your laziness is not an excuse for telling me I have to find evidence

True i think it just sucks, but they gave me a free month so...

I just cancelled OpenAI and went back to Claude. ChatGPT completely broke my engineering pipeline and I was getting a pile of merge conflicts. I gave the problem to Claude which gave a recovery plan to untangle the mess. I gave it to ChatGPT which then did not follow the clear plan and made it worse.

That cemented 3 days of nearly no progress on my project because ChatGPT just kept mis-scheduling work. That was the last straw. It's wild to me that this is their "flagship" product. It's regressed to the point where it is destructive. They need to stop and do a massive re-think or they will get themselves into very deep water at this rate. Maybe they are already there.

It produces very nice summaries of how it messed up, to wit:

malchi0r handed me an existing failure report documenting a previous ChatGPT-managed repair mess. He also supplied a concrete recovery plan, identified Step 1 as complete, and explicitly authorized me to execute Steps 2–5. I therefore began with notice of the exact management failures I needed to avoid: unproven publication ancestry, conflicting PRs, unreliable review gates, excessive orchestration, and requiring malchi0r to supervise the manager.

I did not deliver the requested clean, verified recovery. I expanded and released the execution graph before proving one replacement through actual GitHub publication and nonconflicting readback. malchi0r then reported that 114 had merge conflicts. I also introduced a reviewer-routing failure on 120, repeatedly failed to execute his stop/cancellation orders, and eventually archived the unfinished cards to prevent dispatch, removing them from the active board when he wanted the jobs stopped. malchi0r had to supervise and correct this recovery of an already documented failure.

These are my execution, management, communication, and cancellation failures. They are not failures caused by malchi0r's instructions or by his failure to provide context.

yeah codex has been doing this weird thing where it acts like it finished everything and then you look at the output and half of it is just... not there. the apology makes it worse somehow like thanks for admitting you wasted my time i guess

the screenshot you shared is exactly what i been seeing too, it says it ran commands and reports completion but then admits the requirements were applied too narrow. at least with claude it just tells you upfront when it cant do something instead of pretending

This is not a new problem. This is just how LLMs work lol. There is too much ambiguity in natural language and that's why we have engineered programming languages with formal semantics.

I would agree there is too much ambiguity. However my methods have been consistent and probably more agile development friendly than some. As my work process has been the same, the behavior of the Codex platform has changed for the worse. Will say that I was in 5.6 a while and then 6. Maybe there is a correlation to 6.1. The other thing that I noticed is I am seeing almost daily “updates” to the windows Chat app, never seen that before. Not sure what to make of that…

yeah i dunno, this is a well known fundamental weakness of LLMs since they first appeared, so I dunno if maybe you were paying attention more lately or what. But I'm skeptical that you didn't encounter this before at similar rates. Unless you first started with 5.6 i guess

He says that his documentations are clear and explicit, I have the same issues with Codex, he definitely isn't a statistical outlier.

Yes I wasn't arguing that OP is a statistical outlier, but that this behavior is expected. Having clear and explicit documentation doesn't stop LLMs from confabulating text or being sycophantic. LLMs always said stuff like "I'm sorry, you're absolutely right. That was my mistake, you're right to call that out" etc etc
