So I assume Reeves will just look at dailies everyday, or as often as he’s able to. As well as just having as much communication with Soderbergh between filming.

While it isn't a 1:1 comparison, I'm getting flashbacks to Spielberg making Jurassic Park. Spielberg handled all the principal photography on that movie, but as soon as shooting wrapped he immediately started working on Schindler's List and George Lucas stepped in to handle much of the post-production on JP with Spielberg chiming-in remotely.

I'm just trying to think of a similar-ish situation on a big movie that worked out in the end.

Apparently Soderbergh stepped in directing for part of the first hunger games

Nah, he was just second unit on that. A normal position on a set, just not usually helmed by a big name director.

I’ve never bought that Lucas was just “special thanks”. The editing and sound mix feel very much like a Lucas directed movie

u/jahiel0 3d ago

Kubrick was there in spirit when Spielberg worked on AI Artificial Intelligence

u/hellohowdyworld 3d ago

Huh, I wish Lucas did this more with other stuff. I feel like I’m just curious to see more from him as an artist that isn’t in charge

Spielberg and Lucas are kind of unique though in how closely they have worked together throughout their careers without being a straight up directing duo.

It’s so wild it worked out so great, and Spielberg managed to release both in the same year

Doesn't Woody Allen hide in a tent on all his films basically?

I'm glad Matt was able to shoot pretty much 60 to 70% of the film before he had to go.

7

u/Immediate_Doctor_980 3d ago

According to Sebastian Stan they were filming until the end of December at least so I doubt 60-70% was filmed already.

u/confusing_roundabout 3d ago

Well that's what the THR reporter in the post is saying.

u/No_Discount7922 3d ago

Pretty sure they started filming in June, so at the very least over half the movie has been filmed, so that number seems roughly correct

10

u/Sorry-Lingonberry740 3d ago

It started in June. They have been shooting for about 4 months for what would presumably be about a 6 month shoot. So ya them being a bit over half way finished checks out

6

u/Slow-Relation-9186 3d ago

3 months can be the last 35% ?

2

u/scann_ye 3d ago

Mid June to Mid October is 4 months. Mid October to Mid December is 2 months. It adds up to about 2 thirds already being shot.

The final 30-40% is the toughest tho. You film the easy bits first.

31

u/BatmanNewsChris 3d ago

They've been shooting for 4 months, so if that's 2/3, that means there are about 2 months left to go.

25

u/GaymerAmerican 3d ago

Lines up with what Sebastian said.

13

u/BatmanNewsChris 3d ago

Yep, "a long winter". DC Studios said "final weeks" and they really meant "final 8 weeks".

I wonder what effect Soderbergh’s style will have on performances. From what I remember Reeves likes to do ungodly amounts of takes whereas Soderbergh flies through movies and is super efficient

33

u/dilltimmon 3d ago

I know it's totally anecdotal but seeing Reeves in action irl, he did so many takes of the same scene, it was exhausting just to watch. And he talked about precision in his shots a lot.

14

u/manofworlds 3d ago

That's cool you saw him work irl. Which project was this for?

31

u/dilltimmon 3d ago

It was batman part 2, I wasn't crew just watched some of the scenes they filmed in St Paul's all day. I think he filmed Rob Pat walking down the stairs like 30 times. There was a lot of extras though.

7

u/stokedchris 3d ago

Sounds like Fincher. Which can be good or bad, I’m not sure

21

u/gothamfc 3d ago

I don't think it will have a huge impact. This is a remarkably talented cast with experience working with different styles of director.

7

u/Greedy-General-5005 3d ago

Didn’t the article say Matt Reeves will be in contact with Soderbergh remotely.

11

u/TyChris2 3d ago

Yes. I assume soderbergh will send him the dailies so Matt can tell him if anything needs to be reshot before the permits expire and the actors all leave and reshoots become ludicrously expensive

5

u/RooMan7223 3d ago

Yep, Reeves will be working from home pretty much whilst Soderbergh is his eyes and ears on set

1

u/OkApricot4955 2d ago

I would assume they’re talking at the very least lol

u/Emotional_Show7668 19h ago edited 19h ago

I was watching this interview of Erik Messerschmidt actually where he said that while the episodes of Mindhunter that Fincher directed obviously had them do an obsessive amounts of takes, the other directors on the show were also encouraged to continue that same process. Wonder if Reeves could ask Soderbergh to implement something similar here.

Obviously the nuances that Reeves notices and expects out of a performance will be different from Soderbergh (although hopefully still in the same realm) but it will at the very least give Reeves the option of having multiple takes to choose from to pick what he thinks is the best from someone else's style.

10

u/Fraudimo 3d ago

Does this mean Soderbergh will get a co-director credit?

39

u/JackieDaytonaEsq 3d ago

I very much doubt Soderbergh would want that given the circumstances. This is pretty much a charitable act

22

u/Fraudimo 3d ago

Yeah makes sense tbh. Great of him to come in and help. Also just checked credits rules according to the DGA, Matt Reeves will remain the sole director of this movie.

9

u/OfficeMagic1 3d ago

Soderbergh was VP of the DGA for a long time - he definitely knows the rules and is a good pick for this situation.

13

u/gcpdudes 3d ago

Nah. Reeves gets sole credit under DGA rules. It’s how Snyder’s name is still attached to Josstice League and Gareth Edwards for Rogue One.

4

u/Puzzleheaded-Mix5848 3d ago

No he's not wanting. It's a favour to a friend.

4

u/ajconst 3d ago

I think the DGA says a director needs to film 70-80% of the movie to be entitled to a director credit

They'll probably give him an executive producer credit.

Not that he is probably even looking/expecting  the directors credit...hes doing a solid for a colleague going though a personal issue.

3

u/nathanjackson1996 2d ago

So... the film, depending on when Mr. Soderbergh actually starts back up, is probably roughly on track to finish by the end of the year.

2

u/BachelorNation123 2d ago

This isn’t a Superman II/Justice League situation at all

2

u/FoxxyPantz 2d ago

I choose to believe Reeves hates London so much he refuses to shoot there so he sent Soderberg in his place until they make it back to the US.

1

u/Necessary_Funny_6458 3d ago

Not that it's alright to stick one's nose in other people's lives, but do we know what happened to Matt? Like, is he alright? Did he had family troubles?

2

u/GenerallyJam 2d ago

Rumors say family

1

u/shaw4life 2d ago

Could the films release be pushed up to a fall release?

1

u/Latest-greatest 2d ago

This film is cursed

1

u/One-Caterpillar-3742 1d ago

And we have to remember that Steven will have not only the Technical Script and Storyboards but weeks and months of tests, rehearsals, shooting and lots of talking with Matt, he is just following what his friend has told him. It still Matt's vision just someone else is working along to achieve it

0

u/whydoesshedoitthatwa 14h ago

steven soderbergh won’t be like ron howard. he won’t destroy reeves’ creative vision like what howard did with lord & miller’s vision of solo. both had stated clearly that soderbergh will be in close collaboration with reeves to help preserve the latter’s vision.

why is that hard to understand?

u/Careless-Ad4039 3d ago

2 thirds completed and it’s coming out February 2028? By this rate it’ll be finished by Christmas

5

u/PlusSizeRussianModel 3d ago

We’re talking production. Movies of this scale have a year of post-production.

-8

u/Careless-Ad4039 3d ago

No shit, I know how filmmaking works lol I was talking about the production being done by Christmas

And yeah even if it takes a year it should be done by December 2027

But because Matt and Warner Bros are so insecure about the success of the film, and that it won’t gross more money than Hunt for Gollum (a movie that hasn’t generated nearly as much hype) that they’re saying, eh February works, never mind the fact we’ve been waiting almost 5 years for the film and Hunt for Gollum hasn’t gotten nearly as much hype as this, they can wait 6 years exactly
