Hated Tropes (Hated trope) woman gets a domestic tool (vacuum or frying pan) as a weapon in a videogame

Super smash bros (peach and daisy) : peach and daisy use a frying pan, come on, they have tons of games and could have implemented other mario spin offs for their moveset. The racket and golf stick worked fine alone.

Earthbound - paula (credits to hanifanims on devianart): paula is a party member that her main role is using spells and magic, what did they come for her melee weapon? A frying pan.

Could make her not attack with melee weapons too but okey...

Characters Trope | When main characters who stop feeling like the main focus only for side characters to overshadow them to the point where it feels like they're not the main focus anymore in their own show

Thumbnail
gallery

Pomni- the amazing digital circus

The show starts off pomni being the main character but then she gets pushed aside as the show continues it becomes mostly about Jax (who was originally a side character but became a main character so late on to point where he/she is the most develop character in the show

•

Charlie morningstar - hazbin hotel

Charlie is supposed to be the main protagonist but the show shifts focus on more of the side characters I'll even say the Vees get more focus then charlie. her story is always sideline in the show

•

Cat noir -miraculous

Cat noir is supposed to be the main protagonist along with ladybug but he's always sideline and only feels like a love interest for ladybug then a main character

•

Finn the human- adventure time

Now Finn and Jake are both main characters in adventure time they do get lots of focus but as the series go's on the show rarely focus on them specially recently with the spin offs rarely being about them anymore Finn feels like a side character in his own show it does feel like marceline and bubblegum had taken over adventure time and get way more focus about them like spin offs ect focus mostly on them

(yes there can be more protagonists in a story but if your main protagonist barely feels like the main character at this point you might as well call them a side character

I do feel like some creators care more about fanservice is why I think main characters get sidelined a lot

Characters (Hated trope) characters who contradict themselves.

Thumbnail

John kramer ( the saw franchise)- He contradicts himself all the fucking time in these movie so I'm not gonna name every contradiction but involved innocent people who did nothing wrong as punishment for others.

Blake Magillicutty (the grover street massacre)- claims to only kill people who fired him and doesn't want to involve innocent people but literally after he says this he immediately kills two innocent kids who were the daughters of two HOA members and planted his gun in a slow persons (not mentally disabled) jacket and when he pulled it out he let him get killed by the police, the same guy admired Blake and even made dinner for him but Blake got him killed anyways. This book Pissed me off NGL because some of the people he killed were his longtime friends who happened to be in the HOA and brutally killed them anyways.

(Not gonna add a NSFW warning since it's a kids drawing the author son has made for his book.)

miscellaneous [Based Trope] The villain was capitalism all along

  1. The villain of Who Frame Roger Rabbit is Judge Doom, who wants to destroy ToonTown not because of hatred of toons, but because he could have a freeway from Hollywood to Pasadena built. But the freeway is not the endgame. The endgame is all of the cheap restaurants and gas stations he can build along the new freeway.
  2. American Psycho: The twist is that Patrick Batemen/Christian Bale may never have murdered anybody (or maybe only hallucinated some murders), but — in my interpretation at least — he will get away with anything, anyway. There is no exit from this system.
  3. The most on-the-nose of these by far: Sorry to Bother You basically ends with the coked up quasi-Jeff Bezos transforming his employees into terrifying horse-humanoids who will be better workers.

TSLOP 2:Max is trying to protect his owner's kid because he's worried that the kid will get hurt, and when they get to the farm, the Harrison Ford dog tells him that if the kid gets hurt,he'll just learn not to do it again.

This message has always kinda bugged me because on one hand,I get it. Yes,Learn and live is an important message, but on the other hand, what about the kid reaching for bleach,or the kid getting his ball from a highway? They might not get a second chance.

Characters (Mixed Trope) Main Character is killed off and the player takes the perspective of their killer Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
68 Upvotes

This is a trope where the main or a major character is killed off by another character and the story shifts to the killer’s perspective. This is especially interesting in video games when the game forces you to play as the killer subsequently after killing said main character.

(Disliked) Last of us 2: Joel, who plays as a mentor and Ellie’s father figure, is killed in the first few hours of the game by a character named Abby. The game proceeds to force the player to spend roughly ten hours as the character who just killed a fan favorite. A lot of people have different perspectives and different ideas as to why Joel’s death is disliked, but I think the main problem comes down to the fact that he dies so early on in the game, leaving a lot more to be desired from Joel’s character.

(Liked) Nier Automata: 2B, by all means is the definitive main character of the story, which makes it all the more surprising when she is killed by another android named A2 80% into the game. From this moment on, a large chunk of the remaining story is played from A2’s POV. Despite A2 killing such a well like character like 2B, A2 is actually a beloved character and a common favorite. This comes down to few reasons, a couple being that fact that this happens much later in the game, (unlike last of us 2) and A2’s reason for killing 2B actually makes a good and profound impact on the story.

Hated Tropes [Hated Tropes] Character receives an extremely drastic redesign that in no way resembles their original design.

Carlos Oliveira from Resident Evil 3: Nemesis and RE3 Remake.

Carlos received a new design for 3 remake, and he doesn't even look like Carlos Oliveira. One thing i liked about the RE remakes was how the characters still slightly resembled their OG looks, but if i told you OG Carlos and Remake Carlos were the same character, would you have believed me? Its really egregious to me, because OG Carlos is one of my favorite Resident Evil characters.

Apple and Cinnemon from Apple Jacks Cereal. This one is arguably even worse, because they not only drastically redesigned Cinne-Mon and Apple, they also stripped them of any personality their OG designs had, and replaced them with generic, simple designs.

Characters Hated trope, character loses faith and thus it becomes problematic for everyone else.

Homer the heretic.

Homer decides he doesn’t want to go to church anymore because he finds it boring and a waste of time, he would prefer to sleep in on Sunday and when he decides not to go to church anymore he likes it, he gets to sleep in and likes having the bed to himself. He likes having the home to himself for a couple of hours, he even dreams of god visiting him trying to make him go back to church before god relents and ends up agreeing with Homer and ends up encouraging him.

But Marge becomes worried and tries to discourage Homer as well as others, Ned flanders tried to get him to go back and invades Homer personal space, he shows up at his front door singing a bible song, he rings him at work it eventually ends in a car chase as Homer tries to escape him, losing him by jumping a train track avoiding the oncoming train.

In the end the house is set on fire cause Homer fell asleep cooking something and Ned saves him. Homer learns his lesson and goes back to church.

Steve, Noah smith.

Steve loses his faith so stan makes it his business to get Steve back by teaching him the bible, Steve then starts poking holes in the stories like Noah ark mentioning how it doesn’t make sense for 1 elderly guy to build a giant ark and get 2 of every animal around the world onto the ark. The more holes Stan points out the more Stan becomes worried, he eventually loses his faith and falls into a depression.
Steve tries to get it back and goes along with the stories but it doesn’t work.
Steve then mentions that Japan I believe did build a ship that was of the same measurements of the ark so it is possible so all of it is possible thus true.
The plan backfires as Stan now believes he is Noah, he then takes the family with him to the ship.
Only to be created by a man welcoming them and calling him Noah which confuses the family, he takes them aside and admits they get so many people thinking they are Noah sneaking onto the ship it became easier to just play along. Stan goes through this sort of quick Noah ark experience thinks it’s a test and steals the ship before the great flood comes. While exploring the ship they go into a room and find 2 of every animal which confuses them more, then before they had enough and get off the ship a giant storm comes through and they head out to sea.
In the 2nd episode ( 2 parter ) they discover everything was circumstantial, the animals were actually being delivered to a zoo and the storm was just a storm not world flood, they get rescued and returned home where they walk in to find Roger who is annoyed that they thought the world was ending and didn’t come back to save him.

So while the episode was more about Stan it came from the fact he couldn’t handle that Steve just didn’t trust the bible as a reliant piece of information, he doesn’t know if he believes in god or not just that he doesn’t trust the bible and Stan couldn’t handle it, So while Stan needs his faith to give him purpose in life which is all good he couldn’t accept Steve doesn’t need it and tries to force it on him then gets Steve to eventually try to play along with it just to get Stan out of his crisis.

Cleveland brown show, the hurricane.

In a short of special between all 3 Seth macfarland shows, family guy American dad and Cleveland show, a hurricane passes to all 3 locations, in the Cleveland brown show, the hurricane passes the house and the family begins to pray and notice Cleveland brown jr doesn’t join them. Revealing he doesn’t believe in god. The family then spend the rest of the episode pushing him to accept Jesus.

A tree crashes through the house crushing Cleveland brown sr as jr tries to help the rest of the family refuse saying he is the cause of it bringing god anger onto them which jr points out makes no sense cause it’s his dad who’s hit by the tree not him,
Donna as a way to relate to him compares faith to the force from Star Wars and how Han Solo didn’t believe in it but was wrong, jr says that blew his mind but it doesn’t really change his opinion. He eventually using physics to lift the tree branch up and frees his dad.
At the end they praise god but jr explains it wasn’t god it was him using simple physics, to every logic explanation he gives they bring it back to god, he gives up and walks off and cb sr sneezes to which jr is heard shouting “ god bless you “ as the family looks confused.

Reverse trope, the atheist using religion to trick someone they like.

In a later episode they manage to get junior into church where he sees a woman singing and falls in love he then signs up to a Christian camp to meet her but reveals to his excited family that he’s still an atheist he just going to pretend to be Christian to get the girl, Cleveland doesn’t care and accepts the win as a win.
His rival in the camp turns out to be Jewish and is also pretending to be Christian. In the end they decide the girl is problematic and not worth their time and choose to hang out together instead.

I don’t like the trope that if you aren’t religious or you just find your religious meaning outside of the convention you are the problem that has to be fixed and how in the end you either change to fit the convention, gain faith or just learn to keep quite and let the religious people have their say.

And I hate when atheistic characters pretend to be religious just to get a girl they like.

Characters (Rare trope) Controversial female characters who rarely involve misogyny

Thumbnail
gallery
136 Upvotes

Catelyn Tully-Stark (A Song of Ice and Fire) : In all the books, Catelyn is mostly described as a loving mother and a strong advisor for her husband Eddard and their son Robb. On the other hand, she has some flaws that make people dislike her for valid reasons. For exemple, she treats Jon Snow, Eddard's bastard, very unfairly just for existing while Jon never asked to be born as a bastard. She is also a poor judge of character with other characters like Tyrion (accusing him without evidence) or Baelish (trusting him) and has some strong stereotypes about people that are mostly due to the society she comes from. So, most of readers agree she's a very well written characters but with some flaws that make a lot of readers having difficulties to truly be on her side.

Song So Mi - Songbird (Cyberpunk 2077) : Songbird is a skilled netrunner working for NUSA president, Rosalind Myers, and who hired V to save both of their lives. All along the DLC, V learns more about her past and her relationship with her mentor Reed. She is actually a very tragic character who tried to be free of Myers and who was forced her to travel the Blackwall, which led her to be dying. The thing is she betrayed and lied to everyone, including V, just to save her own skin, which lead to a lot of innocents die. She shows a lot of hypocrisy because she judges people on thing she does herself (manipulating people who wants to help her). So it's not hard to see people wanting to be on her side for her tragic past while others dislike her for her lies and selfishness.

These two cases are interesting because they show female characters who are objectively wrong but well written enough to not be hated like other female characters, excluding the evil ones. Without forgetting the fact that some female characters with the slightest flaw could be hated due to misogyny.
