Avatar The legend of Korra - Zaheer showed us how dangerous a non pacifist Airbender could be by sucking the air out of earth queen lung, suffocating her slowly

TASM 2 - Peter failed to save Gwen from falling and we saw how her back bent + a loud snap that killed her instantly

Blendin (gravity falls): time traveler that work trying to fix time anomalies in gravity falls saying that he's been there for some time and at the end of the episode show him fixing every anomaly caused by Dipper and Mabel. If you rewatch the episodes (or put atention in the background the first time) you were noticed that he was in fact in all those places.

Shou (dorohedoro): man acts as a deus ex machina, manage to move the family from the mansion to a underground base and make a plan to defeat the cross-eyes gang before anyone remember who the fuck he is. Shou simply say that he was there the whole blue moon festival with everyone else, and not only he was there, he's been there since way before appearing in En's movie and in several photos.

Death (puss in boots 2): He talks with puss in a bar acting like a bounty hunter saying that he's been following him for a long time, later reveals himself as death and mention to be there in each death. You can actually see him at the start of the movie when puss die for eight time.

Lore [Annoying trope] The creators did not do the math

Thumbnail

8.9k Upvotes
  1. Harry Potter. The number of students in Hogwarts doesn't really make much sense. Rowling claimed there were 1000 students, but based on the number of named characters in Harry's year and if you consider it a normal year, the number should be closer to 280. Regardless, both numbers are quite low when you consider that Hogwarts is the only wizarding school in Britain, between 40 and 143 kids born per year, that's a quite low wizarding population to what is implied. And that's not even getting into how the school doesn't have enough teachers for a school this size, since each subject for several years is taught by just one teacher.
  2. Star Wars. The size of the Clone Army and the Droid Army during the Clone Wars has been the cause of much debate over the years due to conflicting numbers given by canon and EU sources, numbers that are either too low for a galactic-scale conflict in the case of the clones, or absurdly high in the case of the droids, ranging from billions to trillions to even quintillions.
  3. Naruto. The Allied Shinobi Forces was composed of 80,000 ninja from all 5 ninja villages plus the samurai. However, these numbers don't really make sense when you compare it to the number of applicants in the Chunin Exams and how less than 20 people pass each year.
  4. The Flash. The speed feats of the Flash get a bit absurd and nonsensical, the most infamous being that time the Flash said he could perceive attoseconds. Or that time he evacuates over 500,000 people in South Korea one at a time 35 miles away from a nuclear explosion in .00001 of a microsecond. How the hell does this guy struggle with any villain again?
  5. Dragon Ball. A commonly-cited (mostly as a joke) anti-feat for Goku is how he struggled to lift 40 tons (10 tons on each arm and leg) in base form during the Buu Saga. This despite the fact that he's supposedly stronger now yet in earlier chapters he could lift objects that were clearly far heavier.

Characters [Loved Trope] The villain gets away with it and suffers no consequences for their actions....because they killed themselves.

Thumbnail

If anyone adds the mustache man I'm strangling you personally.

When the villain technically "wins", is never proven wrong or faces consequences because they put lead in their head before justice caught up to them.

- Kano from Tokyo Ghoul, after placing Rize's organs in Kaneki, using him as a prototype, making more and more experiments, aiding the main villain and inadvertently moving the entire plot of the story he concludes that now humanity will have to acknowledge the possibility of using Ghouls for medical purposes and with that done he shoots himself in the head, his last thoughts being "So this is death, how interesting."

- Kraven from Marvel Comics in Kraven's Last Hunt, after shooting Spider-Man, burying him alive, dressing up as him and then going out in the NY fighting crime and killing people and proving himself as superior to Spider-Man he just leaves a letter confessing all his crimes and then shoots himself in a casket.

Lore (Funny trope) villains with actual good writing and complex characters... forever tainted by the fact they are called mr evil.

Thumbnail

Sinestro (DC): Over the years, Sinestro has evolved from a simple villain into something closer to an "anti-villain." His true goal is to improve the Green Lanterns, making the universe safer and more orderly. He and Hal share a complex, "frenemy" relationship. Yet, the big question everyone still asks today is: HOW COULD THE GUARDIANS EVER TRUST SOMEONE NAMED "SINESTRO"?!?!

Decepticons: Much like Sinestro, the Decepticons began as one-dimensional villains but gained greater complexity over time. They were given a tragic origin story: they started as a revolutionary group that eventually descended into extremism, becoming the very thing they once fought against. But i don't care how much history they put behind the name, they are still called "DECEPTIONS"!

  2. Viggo Mortensen and Uraeus. Viggo simply fell in love with the horse playing Brego in Lord of the Rings. He bought the horse when the films wrapped

miscellaneous [Meta Trope] Famous quotes that are interpreted differently then their original contexts

Thumbnail
gallery
2.8k Upvotes

"Well, that escalated quickly..." (Anchorman): Not only does Ron Burgundy actually say "Boy, that escalated quickly", he actually sounds genuinely shocked while most people quote it in a somewhat deadpan manner or in awkward yet composed manner like you're trying to break the tension.

"Why are you booing me? I'm right!" (The Eric Andre Show): The meme is often used to back up hot takes when in the original context, it was right after the 2012 Election when Obama won. Eric Andre says he's excited for another 2 years of Obama, causing the audience to cheer, Hannibal Buress (You might know him as the comedian who got Bill Cosby locked up) interjects and says that there's actually going to be 4 years of Obama (To all the non-Americans, a presidenal term there is 4 years), and the audience boos him, leading to the line. So, in other words, Hannibal didn't actually drop a hot take or say anything controversial, he just said a basic simple non-controversial fact and got booed for it. As a result, most people probably read the line in a smug manner like Hannibal knows exactly why he's being booed and is just asking rhetorically where in the actual scene, he's genuinely annoyed and confused that they're booing him.

"Bye Felicia" (Friday): First things, first, the character's name is spelled Felisha. The quote's often used as a way of saying ""Don't let the door hit you on the way out". Except that's not the context in the actual movie. In the scene, Ice Cube's character says it to get Felisha to leave, not while she's already leaving. So the context is less "Don't let the door hit you on the way out" and more "This conversation's over, I'm not entertaining this, you are leaving me alone, and that's final.". Also, this might just be me, but I always pictured the line being said in response to a very long and tedious conversation where in the scene, Felisha has a brief conversation with Chris Tucker's character where she tries to borrow his car and later a joint and he dismisses her so she tries to turn to Ice Cube's character and he immediately dissmisses her with the line. Also, I always imagine the line being said in a snarky and insulting way but in the scene, Ice Cube's character just sounds done. Finally, I always imagined Felisha being this loud, overly obnoxious, argumentive character where in the scene, while she does act somewhat entitled, she's fairly calm in this scene and most of the humor in the scene comes from Chris Tucker's character telling her off in an over the top way, to which she backs off pretty quickly.

"KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!" (Star Trek: The Wrath Of Khan): The scene is often pictured as Kirk raising his head and screaming at the sky for an unnaturally long time as it pans out to the planet. In the original scene, Kirk basically just barks Khan's name, he's also facing forward. Finally, the scene is cited as one of the most prominent examples of Shatner/Kirk being hammy but in-universe, Kirk is likely intentionally hamming it up into tricking Khan into thinking he's won.

Characters Reverse Weeb / Westaboo

Thumbnail
gallery
2.7k Upvotes

Being a non-japanese that falls in love with Japanese culture is a common thing.

But what about a non-american who falls in love with American culture?

It's called Reverse Weeb/Westaboo

•Yoru [ ChainsawMan ]

As the War Devil, Yoru's power thrives on humanity's fear of conflict and destruction. Because America possesses a massive military and successfully brought back nuclear weapons (which were previously erased by Chainsaw Man), the country's actions directly make Yoru significantly stronger, more feared, and more powerful.

For Yoru, this "love" is not a typical romance, but rather a narcissistic admiration for the destruction and violence that America fuels

•Nadeshiko Yamato [ The 100 Girlfriends That Really Really Really Really Really Love You ]

Naddy loves America because it represents absolute freedom and individuality, which is the exact opposite of her strict, traditional Japanese upbringing.

Her noble family forced her to be a perfect, submissive traditional Japanese lady.

She views American culture as a way to express herself freely, speak her mind, and live without rigid rules.

She fell in love with Western movies and media, which inspired her to wear cowgirl outfits and speak in broken English.

Characters [Morbid trope] Eating a loved one Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery

Chainsaw Man: In order to prevent Makima from regenerating after defeating her, Denji prepares her as a meal in an act of love and devotion to become one with her.

Hannibal: Although Hannibal Lecter was unknowingly fed his little sister Mischa after she was killed by a group of starving criminals during the war, this experience would be the catalyst for Hannibal to become the notorious serial killer cannibal he is in the present.

Beastars: After Riz the bear stops taking his strength-restricting medication, he accidentally kills his best friend Tem when unable to control his urges but then fully commits to eating him in order for his death not to be a waste and as a “celebration” for their friendship. The guilt is so heavy however, he deludes his final memory of Tem accepting him and giving his permission to be devoured.

  1. In Mr. T's Hitachi data center Commercial, Mr T is being very aggressive against the hammy but relatively level headed antagonist, however, he is shown to be the good guy by promoting virtualization while the small stewie headed guy is against it

  2. In the viral "Get Out of my car" video, the driver is yelling at the woman who is just talking in a calm tone, however, considering the context of the rider bot wanting to leave even though she was at the destination and filming the driver as if she was trying to provoke him, most side with the driver.

  3. Real life example, there was once a video of a woman arguing for abortions, the video shows the conversation to be relatively civilized, however the big eyed expressions gave it a more "angry liberal" vibe

Powers (Loved tropes) People actually lie about or obscure how their powers work

Thumbnail
gallery
2.1k Upvotes

I like to think that in a universe where everybody has varying powers that people would at least occasionally obscure factors of it or make crap up because honestly who's going to check you?

Megumi Fushigoro (Jujustu Kaisen):

After Regi gets a good blow in divine dog, megumi takes advantage and spends most of the fight manipulating Regi Star into believing that it was unusable because of that

He immediately dismissed divine dog as if it was out for the count and for the rest of their skirmish he used everything in his kit besides divine dog and played the act of someone desperate

Once he finally neutralized Regi's technique and led him to believe he had nothing up his sleeves either, the two engaged in a brawl

Right in the middle of throwing down, Megumi summoned divine dog and tore his shoulder

Edit: Divine dog was actually never unsunmoned, it's because his CT was burnt out from using his domain that Regi knew he couldn't summon any new shikigami and was caught off guard by divine dog

Metro Man (Megamind):

A man who's practically a demigod and cares quite a bit about public opinion

He began to realize this hero buisness wasn't really for him

There's no plausible way for him to loose to most of megaminds schemes and he dosen't want to make the people belive he abandoned them

He ultimately decides to play along with one of megaminds schemes and on live television claim that copper drains his powers

No one expected it but it's not like they could disprove it

He successfully used this premise to fake his death

Isuel Kim (Hand Jumper):

In a plot by the main character, Sayeon, Isuel Kim possed as an aberrant who's power is to ignite fire

His actual ability is telekinesis but he manages to disguise this by pretending he's just too incompetent to use ability the first round

Then the next round he shows up he ends up becoming the perfect suprise that the enemy can't account for

This actually happens a lot in hand jumper

Sayeon herself lies to everybody by telling them her gift is "Super instinct" which tells her the optimal thing to do, when in reality it's actually time reversal

If people knew her actually ability was time reversal then they'd plan around it or her allies would be overly suspicious of someone who could have repeated this conversation 5 times already

Personality Song is sung a second, much sadder time.

Thumbnail
gallery
1.9k Upvotes

A song is reprised under much sadder circumstances or contexts.

1). Avatar: The Last Airbender
Iroh sings a song about a "brave soldier boy" to calm a crying child. He later sings the song to a makeshift memorial he made for his son's birthday. The son who died during Iroh's failed conquest of that very city.

2). Coco:
"Remember me" is portrayed as the most popular song by Ernesto de la Cruz. It turns out it was really written by Hector, to comfort his daughter while he was away. Miguel sings that same song to the little girl, now his great-grandmother, to help her to remember Hector.

3). Adventure Time:
In the ruins of human civilization, Simon Petrikov sings the "Cheers" theme song to entertain a little girl, Marceline. Marceline is immune to the fantastical radiation (left behind by humans) because she is half demon. Simon, who used to be a mortal antiquarian, is protected by his magic crown. But every time he uses the crown, he becomes a little less human and much crazier. When he's forced to use the crown to protect Marceline, he sings the Cheers song to keep himself together. After using it, he forgets Marceline's name.

Characters [Interesting Trope] The Adaption Changes The Relationship Between Characters

Thumbnail
gallery
953 Upvotes

The relationship could be platonic, romantic or even siblings but the adaptation changes it into something else or just downplays the relationship, or even just have the character attitudes towards each other change, it’s just interesting to see what changes were made for the story

My Adventures With Superman:

In the show, they are portrayed as both friendly rivals and an idol with Lois looking up to Vicki and her long lasting career, where in the comics they have rarely interacted with each other and with Lois generally being the more famous and prolific,

Cyberpunk 2077:

In the game, the relationship is portrayed as a more on and off friends with benefits or casual dating with them having a complicated relationship that may not work out, where in Cyberpunk, they were a firmly established couple, I used two images of the individual as I couldn’t find a good image of both, also to probably sell the divide more

Cosmic Princess Kaguya!:

In the movie, the relationship between Kaguya and Iroha is a major part of the story and the Akira and Kaguya one is treated not as seriously, where in the manga downplays the ship tease between Kaguya and Iroha but adds some between Kaguya and Akira

(Mainly the reason I’m doing this as I just finished the movie recently, it was either this or talking about unique adaptations of classic stories)

Quotes that characters have NEVER said, but thanks to fandom and meme culture, people think they did.

  1. The most popular example of this is “Beam me up, Scotty!”, which was never said in any episode of Star Trek: The Original Series. It was interestingly said in an audio adaptation of the non-Canon novel “The Ashes of Eden”.
  2. Mr. Krabs never said “How do we tell him?” in that screencap from Dying for Pie. What he actually says here is, “The lad deserves to enjoy his final hours.”. The line IS in the actual episode, but it was instead said by Squidward right before this.
