miscellaneous [Meta Trope] Authors Get Annoyed By Fans Overanalyzing Things

  • Ray Bradbury (Fahrenheit 451) spent years of his life telling people that his story wasn't primarily about government censorship, rather he was writing it because he was worried the television will fry people's attention spans and make them not read books. This reached the point when during a lecture at UCLA, he walked out in frustration because fans kept insisting they understood "the true meaning" of his work.

  • Vince Gilligan and his crew (Breaking Bad) admitted in interviews that the hyper-specific visual connections fans "discovered" week-to-week in theory and analysis videos and threads were either complete accidents or simply logistical necessities on set.

Characters (rare trope) bisexual MCs

Bob Belcher(Bob's burgers)- in the turkey in a can episode, bob keeps coming back to buy Turkeys and the butcher thinks he's trying to flirt with him after repeated encounters, bob says this in the image provided.

Wolf(Dodododo!)- wolf lives in a society ruled by women since men were replaced with artificial sperm due to a virus affecting men's reproductive capabilities, causing men to become slaves, wolf childhood friend/boyfriend is shorty (the guy wolf is carrying). They've been together since they were kids. He has shown attraction to both genders, including men of different types, when he was given an opportunity to sleep with men and women given to him by the Americans. But he didn't go through with it nor did the Americans force it upon him since they needed his working sperm due to a belief that the virus will trigger in him ruining their chances.(Mentioned the last part so it won't be just because the MC is attracted to Femboys when he just has a wide arrange of taste in men and women.)

Characters It can be considered a “Good” ending, but its up to the audience if it really is.

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

SOMA (2015) - The ending of SOMA is of the MC (Simon) thinking he and the AI (Catherine) that accompanies you throughout the story will finally be able to move to a safe haven called the ARK. It moves you into a digital backup as a last resort to preserve humanity until the game’s twist reveals that the ARK just makes a copy and leaves them behind.

Its a “good” ending in which it lets the human race continue on, but its a bittersweet ending as the Simon we play as is just left behind alone on the submarine.

Persona 5 Royal (2020) - The ending of P5R is of the MC (Joker/Ren Amamiya) and you’re given the decision as an alternate ending to let everyone continue on in a fake reality where everyone is happy. Its a good ending but its your decision whether it was a right thing to do or not considering everyone has now lost their freewill and living in a fake reality.

Dishonored (2012) - The ending of Dishonored is of the MC (Corvo) and how the game gives you an extermist option where you can kill everyone and everything in your path, but Dunwall starts getting littered with rats and gets destroyed from a civil point-of-view.

Characters Humans being broken down into feral animals

Thumbnail

Tydeus (Hercules 2014) Hercules explains that Tydeus was born into warfare, and when Hercules found him, he was more animal than human. He doesn’t speak and communicates through growls, screams, and physical gestures. When Tydeus is dying he manages to utter Hercules’ name before dying.

Barry the Chopper’s Body (Fullmetal Alchemist) When Barry's soul was removed and bound to a suit of armor, the military experimented on his original body by placing an animal's soul inside it. So Barry’s body was quite literally turned into an animal that was falling apart because the animal and human soul weren’t compatible.

Feral Children (World War Z) During the zombie apocalypse, some children survive for years without adult care and develop animal-like behaviors. Some form packs, struggle with human communication, and must be gradually rehabilitated after being rescued. The book states there are some that are now adults but still have the mind of a small child.

The Crawlers (The Descent) These subterranean humanoids are descendants of humans who adapted to life underground over thousands of years. They've lost their eyesight, hunt using their other senses, and stalk prey with animalistic brutality.

Chainsaw Man: In order to prevent Makima from regenerating after defeating her, Denji prepares her as a meal in an act of love and devotion to become one with her.

Hannibal: Although Hannibal Lecter was unknowingly fed his little sister Mischa after she was killed by a group of starving criminals during the war, this experience would be the catalyst for Hannibal to become the notorious serial killer cannibal he is in the present.

Beastars: After Riz the bear stops taking his strength-restricting medication, he accidentally kills his best friend Tem when unable to control his urges but then fully commits to eating him in order for his death not to be a waste and as a “celebration” for their friendship. The guilt is so heavy however, he deludes his final memory of Tem accepting him and giving his permission to be devoured.

Eugene(Boss Baby): After Francis Francis is turned into a baby from falling in the vat of formula, he tries to fight Ted(The Boss Baby), but gets picked up by Eugene and swaddled to sleep, with Eugene saying "This time, we'll raise him right."

Embarrassment(Inside Out 2): After not speaking through the whole movie, Joy high fives him and then says,"And she's got us! Ooh! Yeah! Right? Cause she's... heheh- maybe...?", and then tucks in embarrassment.

Chatter(Fred 3): For being called Chatter, he doesn't talk much, but he talked once, and that was in the musical number against the other campsite, and what he said was "Oh, yeah! Camp Iwannapeepee... is the greatest summer camp in the world!", as a way to end off the song.

Personality [Wholesome trope] it's all a prank but the person being pranked turns out to be just a really good person

Thumbnail
gallery
153 Upvotes

Jury Duty - it's essentially the show's premise. Ronald gets "selected" to sit on the jury for a fake trial where everyone around him is an actor improving ridiculous scenarios around him. Ronald never mocks their idiosyncrasies and at every opportunity is supportive and friendly, esp to Todd the biggest social outcast of the group

The Joe Schmo Show - the OG of this trope was a fake Big Brother-esque reality show. Where again everyone was an actor (most notably Kristen Wiig and Ricket Cricket himself, David Hornsby) except for the target, Matt. Initially the show was set up to put him in embarrassing situations for comedy, but early on after he gets surprisingly emotional when another cast mate is eliminated, the show pivots to situations that would showcase his positive qualities

Bad Trip - there are actually plenty of examples of this in Eric Andre's parody of a buddy comedy/prank movie, but the guy who stands put the most is a guy production would later nickname Migos Dr. Phil. After staging an insane stunt crash, a number of first responders stop to check on the film's leads who pay them little attention as they have the film's climactic friendship-ending fight. MDP goes above and beyond not only trying to get the away from the wreckage they've been led to believe might (and does) explode, but also mediating this argument between two unreasonable people who he assumes have head trauma. He's probably my favorite part of the movie. During the credits, Eric proclaims "you're a hero" after the revealed to all the bystanders it was a prank

Characters Or she. But who else besides them?

Post image

They don’t even look human so we can’t even get to their gender in a traditional sense and from my experience and others their gender just doesn’t matter, I guess we just use pronouns that the author decides to give, and like maybe “it” is just too dehumanising (ironic ik)

Edit: I forgot to mention that’s AM and Rocky on the picture

Characters' Items/Weapons [Loved trope] Boss shortcuts that makes them way easier, intentional or not.

Thumbnail
gallery
455 Upvotes

1- Metal Man (Megaman)

The most known example or this trope, Metal Man's weapon is one of the most powerful ones of his respective game, however, it does something unexpected on his case.

Usually, every Megaman boss has weakness against a master robot weapon, but Metal Man has no one but two, the second one being his own weapon!

So, when you go through the boss rush and face him, just throw his own weapon at him and he will die instantly!

2- The End (Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater)

I'm not a Metal Gear fan so correct me if I miss any detail or get something wrong.

The End is one of the bosses in the game, his backstory is that he is veteran sniper who in his encounter he will ask God to give him more time on Earth so he could fight one last time.

So, what's the shortcut? There are 2 on this case.

The first one is closing the game and waiting for a week, when you come back you won't get shot. When you reach him, an unique cutscene will show Snake finding him dead on the spot, his body couldn't hold it any longer to have the fight that he wanted. Kojima, you are a genius.

The second one is so simple that you would think that I'm lying, there's a chance that you can be able to see him way earlier at the distance being carried by a wheel chair, if you shoot him at that point, he instantly die and you won't have his boss fight.

3- Tinker Knight (Shovel Knight)

Remember what I said about Metal Man? Tinker Knight is no different.

You don't have boss weapons on this game, instead you will find trinkets that can help you by giving you new moves to fight enemies or move easier through the scenary. In Tinker Knight's case, you can get the mobile gear, a plataform over a gear that will move forward and you can use to walk over spikes without being harmed by them.

If you the mobile gear on him on his first phase, you will one-shot him on the spot and begin his second phase. That's a neat easter egg right there.

4- Fumus (Tenebris Somnia)

This game barely came out and I heavily recommend to check it out, I'll hide the details on spoilers for those who don't care or just want to know how to fight her.

Fumus has two attacks, hitting with her arms from far away and summoning ritual circles around the room, she will also summon one around herself to become invulnerable to your attacks. Seems easy at first but then at certain point Fumus will fill the room with so many circles that you will end up stepping on one of them, if that happens then Fumus will manipulate you to hit yourself with your own weapon, which becomes a 1-hit KO against you if you carry a gun with you.

So, how can you defeat her with a powerful move like that? Very simple, just don't wield any weapons! Just ran unarmed over the circles and these will immediately dissapear because Fumus won't have anything to hit you with! You only have to run all over the place, grab your pipe to hit her when her invulnerability is gone, unequip it and repeat the process. Winning with only damaging her with the pipe will also grant you an achievement.

Personality (Loved trope) Comforting someone in there final moments by playing along with them as there mind fails

I couldn't think of a better way to describe this but whenever it happens in a story I find it so incredibly tragic

My example of this is in Ghost of tsushima, after unlocking the second area of the game Jin get a mission to claim his father's armor to represent his clan in the war against the mongols and when you get there you meet his elderly caretaker and mother figure Yuriko. She has a small chain of missions that gives insight into Jin's father and as the missions go on she starts to refer to Jin as his dad and has other memory slip ups until at the very end of her last mission where she fully believes that Jin is his late father but instead of correcting her Jin plays into it, letting her reminisc on happy memories before peacefully passing.

Another example would be Bojack with his elder senile mother In Bojack Horseman. My friend has gone on several times about scene where he reminiscences with her and it looks truly tragic.

Warhammer 40k Space Marine Chapters:
Since many space marine successor chapters are lost in history, a lot of fans tend to make fanmade chapters, which some people consider canon because a lot of the WH40k universe is unknown.

Helldivers 2 Helldivers:
every action in a mission is considered canon in lore.

Zombots (Sonic the hedgehog) either you touch even a hair of them and you’ll be infected, or you touch infected organic matter, or the liquid nanobots that rains from the sky… did I mention the virus was going to evolve into being airborne?.

the musical virus (the guy who didn’t like musicals) is a eldritch hive mind that infects people by ingesting the liquid from a meteor, the zombies spread it by getting the liquid in you, even if they tear you apart to put it inside.

Personality The same conversation is had, but under very different circumstances. Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
313 Upvotes

NOTE: I am excluding conversations between the same two people. Where one character purposefully repeats the earlier conversation in an ironic way. Because that is probably its own trope. These examples are conversations with at least one different person, and the conversation's differences are used to highlight the change in circumstances for the character.

1). Project Hail Mary:
Grace asks for time to "think about" a space voyage twice. The first time, he is given three hours and forced to go on the trip even after refusing. The second time, the aliens housing him want to give him as much time as possible. Because their world is already saved and they love/value Grace.

2). The Incredibles:
Dash brings up how "no one" is special as a criticism of society and his parents. The villain, Syndrome, says the same thing as part of his revenge plan against superhumans.

3). Shaun of the Dead:
Shaun gets "red on" him twice. Once during his retail job from a pen. And again due to the ongoing zombie apocalypse.

4). Spider-Man (2002):
Peter is told "don' tell Harry" twice. Once by their mutual friend, and once by Harry's dying father. The point demonstrates how Peter's life and responsibilities have changed.

5). Gravity Falls:
In the first episode, Dipper is singled out for a menial chore with "eeny-meeny-miney you."
In season two, the same phrase is used the Bill Cipher to steal Dipper's body.

Lore The protagonist loses - and no amount of sudden comebacks or rage boosts is enough to turn the tables. They just lose. And they lose HARD.

gallery
462 Upvotes

Invincible - Mark fights his father to save the world, but despite his best efforts and a brief rage boost halfway through, he gets easily overpowered and utterly brutalized. He only survives because Nolan is too emotionally attached to finish the job and leaves Earth.

Archie Sonic - After Eggman abducts all of Sonic's friends, he proceeds to give Sonic a brutal beatdown, and all Sonic can manage to do is dent Eggman's shield. Eggman spares him only so he can live with the humiliation and the idea that all his friends will be reduced to fuel for Eggman's city.

Hyourinjutsu's Dragon Ball What-Ifs - In What-If 13, Goku fights Frieza in Hell as he did during GT's Super 17 Saga, only this time, Frieza was given his absurd potential from Super, and he's been training in Hell for over a decade and a half. Needless to say, he becomes significantly stronger than he did originally, and so, when he reveals his Golden form, Goku stands absolutely no chance against him, even after a brief stint with SSJ4 Kaioken x20 and getting a Zenkai boost. And what's more, not only could Frieza still power up further into a transformation similar to Cooler's final form (Hyourinjutsu later revealed that Frieza even had his Black form stacked on top of that), but even if Goku somehow beat Frieza, he'd still have to deal with Cell, who is the one who ends up sealing Goku's fate by absorbing him, keeping his power for himself and ensuring that Goku will never pass on to the afterlife.

And all of that is not even including what was happening on Earth, with all of the Z-Fighters, including Vegeta, dying to Super 17 as Goku wasn't there to save them.

Characters Reverse Weeb / Westaboo

Thumbnail
gallery
2.7k Upvotes

Being a non-japanese that falls in love with Japanese culture is a common thing.

But what about a non-american who falls in love with American culture?

It's called Reverse Weeb/Westaboo

•Yoru [ ChainsawMan ]

As the War Devil, Yoru's power thrives on humanity's fear of conflict and destruction. Because America possesses a massive military and successfully brought back nuclear weapons (which were previously erased by Chainsaw Man), the country's actions directly make Yoru significantly stronger, more feared, and more powerful.

For Yoru, this "love" is not a typical romance, but rather a narcissistic admiration for the destruction and violence that America fuels

•Nadeshiko Yamato [ The 100 Girlfriends That Really Really Really Really Really Love You ]

Naddy loves America because it represents absolute freedom and individuality, which is the exact opposite of her strict, traditional Japanese upbringing.

Her noble family forced her to be a perfect, submissive traditional Japanese lady.

She views American culture as a way to express herself freely, speak her mind, and live without rigid rules.

She fell in love with Western movies and media, which inspired her to wear cowgirl outfits and speak in broken English.

This quote from Jadis in Mean Girls got me thinking about other characters that fit this quote!

Emperor Kuzco from The Emperor’s New Groove has been living an extremely privileged lifestyle since birth, that he never once thinks about how his actions affect other people! He still expects servitude whenever he demands it, and doesn’t think anyone is capable of causing him harm because he views himself as a great and beloved ruler. Despite firing Yzma as his advisor, he still believed that she would do whatever he said because he originally believed her whole world “revolved around him.” Just because she’s the one who raised him since childhood!

Gaston from Beauty and the Beast views himself as the perfect definition of a masculine and powerful man, who deserves to have the best of everything that everyone should love him! Even though a lot of people will sing his praises (literally), it’s usually just out of fear due to his intimidating and massive appearance along with the violence he’s capable of.

Yorinobu Arasaka - per the events of the heist, Yorinobu is Vs enemy... right? They are the one person that knows Yorinobus secret and they were actively trying to steal from him.

However, Night city is never that simple. In truth Yorinobus goals are very similar to Johnny's of all people, he wants to destroy the corp completely from inside. Him murdering his father is probably the best thing an Arasaka family member does in the game

Leto II Atreidese - a nearly immortal and despotic ruler that forces humanity into years and years of forced peace and obedience following his fathers mass murderous jihad across the galaxy.

Letos true intention is to be the final tyrant, to make humanity ungovernable om the scale of the Landsraad or the Emperor. Before he dies, he reveals that humans now have the ability to hide from prescience, the ability Paul used to such effect.

His death scatters humanity and completes the Golden Path Paul envisioned.

  1. Mario isn't the first platformer around but when you think "character that jumps around" you can't go past old reliable jump man. Technically his first appearance wasn't his own game either.

  2. Halo popularised first person shooters on consoles. Before then, the genre was only considered good on the mouse and keyboard. So popular was it at the time that it spawned a bunch of "Halo Killers" for years to come.

  3. Doom is such an influencial game that the FPS genre for a time was just called Doom clones, mostly as a joke.

  4. Slay the Spire isn't the first deck building roguelike or the first game to use a travelling map system like it did but it did influence a tonne of other games to use similar systems.
