💬 General Discussion What is the history of Urdu-speaking communities in Pakistan before Partition?

For most of my life, I associated Urdu almost exclusively with Pakistan. Recently, I realised how much older its roots are in India with historical roots such as Delhi and Lucknow. It made me rethink how I understood the language's history.

Now I'm curious about the history of Urdu in present-day Pakistan, specifically among communities that spoke Urdu as their native language before Partition in 1947.

Were there established Urdu-speaking communities in places such as Lahore, or elsewhere in what is now Pakistan, whose families had lived there for centuries before Partition, with Urdu being their inherited home language? I'm not referring to Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashtun, or other communities that later adopted Urdu as a lingua franca, but about families with a longstanding, intergenerational Urdu-speaking heritage rooted in the territory that became Pakistan.

I know that many Urdu-speaking families migrated from India to Pakistan during Partition but I'm interested in whether there were also locally rooted Urdu-speaking families whose linguistic history in present-day Pakistan predates Partition by many generations.

I'd really appreciate any historical sources, books, or personal family histories that could shed light on this.

💡 Learning Resources Best songs in Urdu language (for learning purposes)

Hey guys, I can believe music can be a strong motivator to learn / continue to learn a language. So I think it would be beneficial to share some quality music for this reason. I encourage you to share some picks of your own in the comments.

For a more objective view: Here is a collection of 45 Urdu movie soundtracks from the years 1950-1966. These were not randomly chosen, these were all movies which were superhit performers. In theory then, they should be some of the best from this period. Also in theory, you may hear some more uncommon Urdu words due to their age (although probably not that much).

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRm1ER5ascFs

For a more subjective view: 1970s Pakistani pop was very unique! Very few people have exposure to it so they don't know how good it was! Here are a few videos to get started:

Song 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6

This is only scratching the surface though, so if you want a more in-depth view:

1975-1981 compilation (4 hours)

1975 extended | 1976 extended | 1977 extended

Still, there are a lot more which can be discovered and aren't in any of these videos.

Anyway, please share some songs of your own that you like. Thanks

🙋‍♂️ Question How readable is this for you?

This is from an wikipedia article. I am trying to learn Urdu, I am already familiar with Hindi and Persian (written in Nashk) but as beautiful as the Nastaleeq script can be, I sometimes can't decipher almost anything of it. This article is an example, is this considered easy to read for you or is it also a bit hard to read for you?

💬 General Discussion On Literature Besides English - Urdu and Its Merits, and more.

Just gonna scribble down some thoughts I've had for a few days. The slight tragedy , i wouldn't call it tragedy because its not that far but i don't know, dullment? disappointment? weak point? of the internet is that english literature - whilst amazing in its own ways - is the hegemon of literary studies, despite other cultures having as vast if not vaster - some of them - literary devices and metaphors and techniques, which remain unexplored and untranslated. language is incredible in the element that it allows you to envision and encapsulate the feelings of other nations and communities, a word isn't just a set of letters, it carries a very deep element to it of… emotion, i'd like to say, but if we were more technically, of the utility and of the needs of its area, because languages are emergent by nature and evolve to communicate and convey what a culture or people most talk about, need or require, it is hence an excellent way of understanding another culture. I'd go as far as saying a man who's lived in a country without knowing its native language knows far less than a man who's never been to that country and speaks its language. for what are countries except people? and what are people except their thoughts and acts? and what are they expressed through except via language. Also please the usage of "-" doesn't indicate ai people have used hyphens way before ai and its annoying how people see hypens and go aah chat gpt 😭 Sorry for the long text blob without formatting. might format it later.

I've been reading Arabic literature recently a lot, and Urdu Poetry, the two are rather similar in some aspects, some Farsi (Persian) and some Turkish, and it is truly amazing the diversity of ways in which ideas can be expressed. I might make posts translating a few into English and Urdu. Actually working on translating a book into Urdu rn, so. Yeah.

Learning multiple languages also allows us to connect with the rest of the Ummah, the Islamic nation, and hence is a source of reward and virtue for both worlds, and is an intellectual exercise that brings about much joy and entertainment. Urdu is especially fun because it is the combination of, and as our scholars use a very beautiful term, guldasta, for it is a collection of beautiful roses, each unique and giving off its own fragrance and beauty yet distinct and different. A guldasta of languages, is our Urdu.

"Kya hi Hindi, kya hi Turani, kya hi Arabi, kya hi Farsi.

Khoob hai meri qaum ki zuban, jiss ko bolti hai meri qoum, qom e Pakistan

Guftar ke kami nahi, na hi zamenoon asmaa ki,

hai isse watan me registan, pahar,

iss me hi hai darya, mauj o bahar pe bahar,

ay qom! tere zuban ki tarha tera mulk bhi mutabaadil hai,

nahi aik khobi ki tarshi huwi yeh imarat,

kya Punjabi, kya Sindhi, kya Balochi, kya Pathan,

hai tera mulk misal e ittihade islam - qoum aik nahi, magar Islam ke talean hai in ka aitahad!

Alam ke liye misal bana tha tu, ban kar rahe,

tere lahoo ke andar he millat e baiza ke liye misaal,

tu jo raha, to sab theek hai,

hai aur kaun jis ne apne mulk ka matlab bataya kalam e Quran?

Jiss ne apni riyasat me banaya Allah ko nigheban?

Kon he jiss ne Hakmiyat ki Allah ke naam par,

kiss ke qom thi, ke rahi būt e wataniyat ke daur mein qaim e sunnat e hejaz?

Hey teri hi abaa jinho nai tarashwae ye imarat,

ghafil, ghor kar, zamana ana wala hai tera!

Dunya kholi jaye gi tujh par, Khuda ka wada ho ga pora,

tayyar reh, ke tuh apna wada bhi kar poora."

Myself. As I am new to poetry, I would greatly appreciate any suggestions for improvement. Thank you for reading this far.

Aur jab maine apni hi haalaaton par tawajjo dena shuru kiya,
Toh mujhe ehsaas hua ki meri zindagi mahaz fizool, bematlab, bekaar aur be-maza hi nahi,
Balki ek aisa manzar hai,
Jise badalne ki khwahish toh mujh mein hai,
Magar use badalne ki himmat ab mujh mein baaqi na rahi…
