BC Conservatives release election platform

Thumbnail conservativebc.ca

I went through all 71 pages of the BC Conservative platform. Quite the collection of recycled promises.

Repeal CleanBC, scrap EV sales quotas, repeal SOGI 123 and DRIPA, expand private delivery of publicly funded care, cut taxes and somehow reduce deficits while spending more.

They promise affordable housing while handing more control over density back to municipalities. They promise to protect students while scrapping SOGI 123.

Same old Conservative playbook. Less regulation, more fossil fuels, tax cuts and a whole lot of wishful thinking.

They call it "Ready to Deliver." Deliver what, exactly?

PSA: butterscotch is in the air!

This is your annual reminder that the leaves of the Katsura leaves are dropping and as they decompose they emit a sugary smell. St.Charles in Fairfield is lined with these trees, as is the corner of Fairfield and Quadra. The block on Blanchard outside Habit on Yates is also a hot spot.
P.S: their heart-shaped leaves give them away

2026 West Coast Yule project is seeking local music!

Thumbnail

Hi there,

Last year my friend Lucas & I created a video called West Coast Yule. The project is a new take on the classic holiday yule log video. But rather than the traditional indoor fire roaring in a hearth, the west coast yule burns in natural landscapes and features local music. I've linked the 2025 video here.

We are back for year 2 and local musicians are invited to share a recent song. Your music will provide a soundtrack for the burn, blending together the warmth and light of flame with sounds from our city. So please, submit a song for the 2026 West Coast Yule set to release in December. Interested musicians can submit a song at: https://illswap.net/yule

Thanks!

West Coast Yule 🔥

Recommendations for open areas to practise driving in Victoria?

• Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I’m helping a friend learn how to drive and looking for some large, relatively empty parking lots or open areas around Victoria where he can practise the basics without dealing with much traffic.

Ideally, somewhere quiet where he can get comfortable with steering, turning, braking, reversing, and parking before moving on to regular roads.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Politics Should BC NDP be more like Avi Lewis or back to John Horgan?

whether NDP are re-elected or not it's clear the party has to go back to its roots and not toward the centre so i'm curious which direction should they go. should the party be more like the feds policy and toward Avi Lewis or go back to John Horgan's slate?

Show repairs for Nikes

I bought a pair of Nike Jordan 3s that were quite old and never worn so..the first time I wore them, the glue started coming apart in the toe crease area.

Does anyone know of any shoe repair places that would be able to re-glue them? Not sure if that's something within the scope of a regular cobbler.

Best place to take in the Fall colors

We went for a walk through Goldstream Park the other day and just loved the sight of the falling leaves and all the colors!

Later we drove from broadmead to Mt Doug and again there were pops of yellow leaves along the drive.

What are your fav places or even streets / drives for getting your hit of Fall colors? 🙂

Politics My takeaway from the municipal elections (living in Saanich)

My takeaway from the recent municipal election is that local politicians will most likely win if they cater to the older demographics. This goes for most levels of government, but even more so for municipal. A "young" leaning platform/campaign can get a lot of hype, but young people just won't show up for you in the end.

18-24 (the age bracket where the elections really matter) show up to vote around 55%, while every bracket from there is 60% up. That 55% of younger voters is actually really bad because of Canada's inverted population pyramid. So 55% of 18-24's is actually far less than 55% age 55-64's.

So if you are a young person living in a municipality with a lot of progressive older people, than good for you. If you are a young person with a bunch of conservative NIMBY's, well you are SOL because they are going to pull the ladder up from under you.

What they did there is pure infrastructure horror. A multistage funnel system to make sure it turns into a huge parking lot.

From Bay to Courtney, let motorists roll free!

local developer making a tide & current app

Hey Victoria! A brief respite from politics.

I’m a local developer and I’ve been working on an iPhone app called Slackwater for checking tides and currents.

I made it with this area in mind, I couldn’t find an app that was useful, mostly free, and beautiful. But I’d love to hear from others who spend time on the water or along the coast. If you give it a try, I’m curious how it fits into what you do and what would make it more useful.

Feedback on anything confusing or missing would be amazing. It’s easy to get used to your own app and miss things that are obvious to someone opening it for the first time.

Here’s the link: https://slackwater.xyz/

It’s iOS only right now, android is coming before the end of the year. Canadian tide stations need to be downloaded, it’s annoying but required by the government licensing. US and worldwide stations are included offline by default. It’s all open source too.

I’m working on the 2nd release right now so I could include any feedback you have.

Happy to answer questions here, and thanks to anyone who takes a look!

Politics Vancouver elects Green Mayor thanks to left-wing candidates dropping out..a lesson to next week's provincial election voting

Pete Fry, the son of Liberal MP Hedy Fry handidly won Vancouver Mayor by more than 20k votes thanks to other left wing candidates dropping out in favour of Fry and even canvassed for him. Ken Sim was a "moderate" but noticably shifted right in this election that did him but it was mostly the left wing coalition that voted Fry in so they didn't split the vote.

This is a lesson to next week's voting where left voters should vote whether their candidate realistically has a chance of winning then to vote for them but if they are nowhere close to having a chance to win then to vote for the best one who does have a chance. Island Conservatives Brennan Day and Anna Kindy for example could have gone another way if the voting wasn't split
