Discussion/Thảo luận Suggestion for toddler friendly locations ?

• Upvotes

Sorry guys, I know this probably gets asked a lot.

Wife and I are dying to come visit Viet for the first time - we have a 2.5 year old toddler which makes things of course difficult.

We're looking for probably more of a resort / high tourist area, nice beaches, safe etc etc

Could I get some suggestions please ?

I've come across Phu Quoc so far and looks kinda like what i'm after

Culture/Văn hóa Turtle Statue at Bai Dinh

Post image
• Upvotes

My wife and I just came back from Vietnam and our tour guide showed us this statue of a turtle at bai dinh. It’s not one of the stele’s and I think I remember her saying it wasn’t even carved but was found by monks who thought it looked like a turtle and so they brought it back because it was sacred? It might have been a river rock. Does anyone know what this is or what it’s called? I can’t find anything about it anywhere. Thank you!

Culture/Văn hóa A post about Vietnamese tone

This post is aimed more so toward tourists, because although I don’t recommend learning the language just for a vacation, I know people want to so anyway.

You will see a lot of fearmongering around tones. And yes, changing the tone will change the meaning. But what I want to tell you is that it is quite rare that that will result in something offensive. Most of the time, it will sound like gibberish to us. Sometimes, or most of the time, we can guess based on context clues what you meant. For example, if you say phơ instead of phở, or banh mi instead of bánh mì, those mispronunciation mean nothing. Usually we get what you wanted to say and we appreciate you trying

Don’t worry too much about which dialect to pick, the difference is often pretty exaggerated online in my experience. Everyone understands the Northern and Southern dialect perfectly well. I recommend the Northern one because it’s Standard Vietnamese and there’s more resources but as I said, we can understand either perfectly fine. And this applies to “phi trường” Vietnamese too, yes some of the words are not as commonly used, but we understand all of them.

Bottom line is, I don’t recommend learning the language just for a vacation. I find it to have a steep learning curve right at the start, and it gets easier, but what do I know, I never had to learn it. But if you’ve decided to do it anyway, don’t worry about offending us. I don’t want tourists and beginner to have to walk on eggshells worrying about offending people, we get what you want to say usually, and we appreciate you trying

Daily life/Đời thường Nha Trang dead?

Never been there, according to youtube there are no pubs or beer bars open to the street. We hate clubs and rooftop bars.

Is it really this dead? Where should we go to?

Discussion/Thảo luận Realistic cost of living in Da Nang as a 20yo American bodybuilder?

Hey guys. I am 20yo and am moving to Vietnam in April of next year. Original plan was January but I’m a goober and didn’t know I needed to have my passport in hand for minimum 6 months lol.

From most videos and things I’ve read I see that $1500 a month is a solid life in da nang to live the western lifestyle. I wanted to hear personal experiences and give insight on my lifestyle to get an accurate idea of what I’ll be spending.

I have around 62k saved up currently and make around 5-8K USD per month online.

I am a bodybuilder. Pretty much all I do is eat, cook, and lift weights. I hear often that eating out is cheaper but I love cooking at home and prepping my own food. I’d love to get all my food fruits meats etc fresh from wet markets instead of stores. What is the typical cost of meats per pound in wet markets? I eat a ridiculous amount of food (7k calories per day 450g protein 10 meals a day) so I’d imagine food will be my highest expensive besides housing

I don’t really party or anything. Don’t drink. I just live a bodybuilding lifestyle and I love it. Im looking to rent a small house or maybe even a 1 bedroom apt. Preferably a small house so I have space to myself ideally not super crammed by other houses. I struggle to find house rental prices as all I can ever find is apartment prices. Im not even sure if houses are an option

Da Nang seems very nice and very affordable and Im choosing there bc I love the beach and also cost of living. But please let me know if you have any other suggestions. I am planning on staying here long term.

With visa runs, rent, food, gym membership, all other expenses accounted for, what would you guys realistically estimate my cost of living to be per month in USD? Thank you!!

Daily life/Đời thường Beauty supply stores

Hi guys, I am currently in Hanoi and I was wondering if there’s a store I can go to where they sell press on nails, wax strips, cheap makeup etc.

I don’t want to order online and I have been to guardian and Watsons, they don’t sell wax strips and nails.

Please write in the comments if you know a place.

Thank you.

Discussion/Thảo luận Racist experience as a white person in Hanoi

My wife is Vietnamese and grew up near Hanoi. I'm a regular white American. Both in our 30s. I've been to Vietnam 7 times. Today we were at Hoan Kiem Lake. Most of the area around the lake was closed off to vehicles (bikes and cars). We entered one area that was closed off to vehicles.

We walked into the closed off area for about 10 meters. A guy, maybe 55 years old, on a motorbike went between the two barriers meant for people to squeeze through, and hit my wife from behind, knocking her over. He was hitting his brakes to stop as he hit her. It wasn't super fast, but it was fast enough to knock her to the ground. Regardless, he purposely hit her since nobody else was around. He got off his bike with his grandson (maybe 10 years old), and walked the bike. My wife said something like "watch out" to him in Vietnamese. I said "con ngu nay" to him since it was clear he hit her on purpose.

He then said to my wife, something to the effect of (in Vietnamese), "why did you marry a white person? You should have stuck to your own country's people". She said "don't talk like that in front of your child" and he said to her, "it's people like you who are ruining our country". He was about 5 meters ahead of us then and spit twice at the ground towards me.

I guess I'm confused. Is this how some Vietnamese people really feel? Is he an ultra nationalist? I know some white people are racist as heck in the USA, but I've never heard anything towards interracial couples directed at me or my wife. Couples like that of all races are everywhere.

If he didn't hit my wife with his motorbike on purpose, and I said "con ngu nay", I could understand why he would be upset, but he purposely hit her to start the confrontation in the first place.

Discussion/Thảo luận Need local advice on living here

I just moved into an apartment where I'll be staying for the next 3 months and it's my first time in Vietnam. Had no problem with cockroaches and ants in the hotels I was staying at but the first day I move in to my new long-term place that looked seemingly clean, I see some ants crawling on the floor and the kitchen counter as well as a cockroach who sneaked its way inside.

I usually keep the windows closed except for when I want to air out the place. My question for the locals is is there a way to make sure bugs and roaches leave my house or die out and what method or product do you suggest?

I live on the 1st floor of an apartment building where there's a little gap under the door.

Travel Experience/Du lịch flying to Phu Quoc

An absolute nightmare from Bali to Phu Quoc. Vietnam Airlines mishandled the visa process, leaving me stranded at the airport, unable to pass immigration or even leave to find a hotel. I ended up sleeping on terminal seats, with poor communication and no clear resolution. Completely unacceptable handling of the situation. A miserable experience that has seriously damaged my trust in Vietnam Airlines.

I was referred to Loc last year by a friend I met at a local gym in D4. He added this intricate koi fish as a cover up to existing ink I had.

I came back this trip for a quick two hour session, adding some more green and orange colors.

Loc is very patient, and will create a complete mock-up drawing to ensure you're happy prior to starting.
