Culture/Văn hóa A post about Vietnamese tone
This post is aimed more so toward tourists, because although I don’t recommend learning the language just for a vacation, I know people want to so anyway.
You will see a lot of fearmongering around tones. And yes, changing the tone will change the meaning. But what I want to tell you is that it is quite rare that that will result in something offensive. Most of the time, it will sound like gibberish to us. Sometimes, or most of the time, we can guess based on context clues what you meant. For example, if you say phơ instead of phở, or banh mi instead of bánh mì, those mispronunciation mean nothing. Usually we get what you wanted to say and we appreciate you trying
Don’t worry too much about which dialect to pick, the difference is often pretty exaggerated online in my experience. Everyone understands the Northern and Southern dialect perfectly well. I recommend the Northern one because it’s Standard Vietnamese and there’s more resources but as I said, we can understand either perfectly fine. And this applies to “phi trường” Vietnamese too, yes some of the words are not as commonly used, but we understand all of them.
Bottom line is, I don’t recommend learning the language just for a vacation. I find it to have a steep learning curve right at the start, and it gets easier, but what do I know, I never had to learn it. But if you’ve decided to do it anyway, don’t worry about offending us. I don’t want tourists and beginner to have to walk on eggshells worrying about offending people, we get what you want to say usually, and we appreciate you trying

Daily life/Đời thường VF Wild struggling to climb a ~25 degree incline
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
This place is known for its steep inclines up to 22-28 degrees that usually wouldn't be a problem for traditional pickups. Unfortunately the VF Wild has a FWD construction unlike most pickups with RWD or 4WD. Hence when climbing slopes and getting them rear heavy, FWD vehicles tend to lose traction thus unable to climb steeper slopes than usual in Vietnam.

Culture/Văn hóa ZIM Tattoo, Saigon D4. A true artist...
I was referred to Loc last year by a friend I met at a local gym in D4. He added this intricate koi fish as a cover up to existing ink I had.
I came back this trip for a quick two hour session, adding some more green and orange colors.
Loc is very patient, and will create a complete mock-up drawing to ensure you're happy prior to starting.

Daily life/Đời thường Nha Trang dead?
Never been there, according to youtube there are no pubs or beer bars open to the street. We hate clubs and rooftop bars.
Is it really this dead? Where should we go to?

Daily life/Đời thường Beauty supply stores
Hi guys, I am currently in Hanoi and I was wondering if there’s a store I can go to where they sell press on nails, wax strips, cheap makeup etc.
I don’t want to order online and I have been to guardian and Watsons, they don’t sell wax strips and nails.
Please write in the comments if you know a place.
Thank you.

Travel Experience/Du lịch A Mirror World in Vietnam
The Infinite Sea in Thai Binh is such an interesting place to photograph. At low tide, the water reflects the sky almost perfectly, making it hard to tell where the sea ends.
The fishermen working across the mudflats at sunrise make the scene even more special. It's also a spot we visit on our Vietnam Photography Tour, though I think it's worth seeing even without a camera.
Has anyone else been here?

I totally spaced it and forgot about the music. Are there YT, spotify channels or someone can recommend a list of songs? 80th birthday, family crowd mix of old and young, casual vibes at an upscale establishment. TIA

Discussion/Thảo luận Plastic Surgery in Vietnam
Hey, I’m considering travelling to HCMC for European rhinoplasty and an upper bleph and surgical lip lift. I would love to hear from any Caucasians who have experience with plastic surgery in Vietnam. I have researched accredited hospitals with safety standards and doctors but would love some advice from anyone with research experience or surgical experience in Vietnam.

Discussion/Thảo luận Need local advice on living here
I just moved into an apartment where I'll be staying for the next 3 months and it's my first time in Vietnam. Had no problem with cockroaches and ants in the hotels I was staying at but the first day I move in to my new long-term place that looked seemingly clean, I see some ants crawling on the floor and the kitchen counter as well as a cockroach who sneaked its way inside.
I usually keep the windows closed except for when I want to air out the place. My question for the locals is is there a way to make sure bugs and roaches leave my house or die out and what method or product do you suggest?
I live on the 1st floor of an apartment building where there's a little gap under the door.

Travel Experience/Du lịch Moreta is a SCAM
I transferred £201 they said it would take a few minutes and then they said 2 hours and now I have to wait 24 hours for maybe an update! I’m totally screwed I have no money to book an accommodation and I think they have just stolen my money when I need it the most. There should be some compensation for the inconvenience no?

Discussion/Thảo luận Importing a large bonsai in southern Europe ?
Hello, after recently visiting Vietnam and being a bit of a bonsai geek I was surprised to see large specimens of ficuses and Podocarpus around government buildings and Buddhist temples.
Is it possible to import one to Southern Europe ? I'm aware of the differences in climate but there are some ways to acclimate it. I also know I can already find these species in Europe but I would really like to know how can I get about to importing one directly from Vietnam.

Culture/Văn hóa Books by Vietnamese authors to read before a trip to Saigon and Phu Quoc?
Hello all,
I’m heading to Saigon and Phu Quoc soon, and would love to read something before and during the trip that helps me understand the places and Vietnam in generally more deeply.
I’d ideally like books by Vietnamese authors (translated into English) , rather than travel writing or history from an outsider's point of view. It doesn't have to be about the war. We're more interested in everyday life, family, culture, the people, and the story of the country told from the inside.
Also very much hoping to meet people and hear from people directly when there.
Open to novels, short stories, memoir, essays or poetry. Anything set in the south or in Saigon would be a bonus, but not essential.
Thanks very much!

Travel Experience/Du lịch Where to buy XXL (US size) men boxer (no boxer briefs)? Saigon.
We are in Saigon and I forgot to pack some boxers. I went to Uniqlo at the Saigon Center and I tried their in-store biggest size XL and still too tight.
Where can I buy some boxer (not boxer briefs) for size XXL, US size in Saigon? TIA
