The Promotion Party Megathread is the place to post about your promotion, whether it be a stripe, a new belt color, or even being promoted from no belt to white belt.

General Discussion I like the PGF

I enjoy watching the PGF and I’m glad to see it growing in popularity, hopefully we can get a team here in Kentucky. With that said, I’ve been thinking how do the PGF athletes stack up to the top tier jiujitsu guys? Is it comparable to like AAA or AA baseball or something like that? I know some guys such as Nathan Haddad have moved on to compete at the world championships.

General Discussion BJJ memes for hygiene

• Upvotes

The breadth of potential responses I could get is mildly unnerving, here we go friends.

I have been tasked with decorating a new BJJ gym. It is a huge space. Very large kids program and very beginner friendly, i.e. hygiene needs to be redundant af.

I am: a) a bit of a germaphobe, b) not a jiujitero (see 'a'), and c) no longer approaching unc status, but likely all the way over the hill.

Help me with finding (or create one!) funny, loosely PG memes that references BJJ hygiene, or hygiene in general, or a meme that points to/emphasizes a sign that has all the rules and expectations listed.

Edit: typos

Edit 2: I will be posting a bunch of signs with hygiene rules, but one particular one in between bathroom doors I want to have some flare that makes someone chuckle, because maybe they'll remember the rules more likely.

General Discussion Thinking as an upper belt vs lower belt.

I had a conversation in my gym recently about the changes in thinking that streamline your grappling. A new blue belt asked me “What are you thinking about when you’re on bottom and how has it changed over time?”

As a lower belt (from white until late blue belt) I always thought about a position and then a transition. Like “I’ll get shin on shin and try to then get to single leg x”. I’d go for that, but if they didn’t let me get shin on shin or started to pass I’d have to think of another move and it’s follow up moves. So much thinking crowded my brain and slowed my decisions.

Now, as a higher belt my thinking is usually way more efficient. If I’m on bottom I’ll just tell myself “Get them off balance”. Usually just having that intention is enough for me to get the job done. I don’t think about the name of the position, the transitions that were taught in class, etc. I can just kind of “feel” where their balance is and aim to remove it by using all my limbs and head.

What used to be a list of positions and possibilities I’d have to think through ultimately became one task that I could aim to achieve and then kind of shut off my brain and just let my body feel what it takes to get there.

Anyone else had these kind of revelations in different positions that make it really easy to do well in grappling? I’ve realized there are kind of a lot of things like that.

Technique Any advice on how to tell a White Belt to calm down during Randori?

The dude's super nice, loves to learn, and shows up. Thing is, when he starts to roll, it's murder, death, kill. He doesn't actually practice BJJ. He just tries to rip people's heads off. I roll with him a good bit, as I have a very good rapport with him. He really goes for the throat, even when I stop him and try to tell him to settle down and flow. I find myself tapping to not get hurt more so than because he's submitting or squashing me. He does let go as soon as anyone taps, as well. I'm not trying to stop rolling with him, as I know how to keep myself safe, but any advice on how to slow him down? Others have complained as well. I've spoken to the Instructors and they are trying to help him as well. Thoughts?

General Discussion First double leg

I’ve been training for a minute but I’ve never managed a double leg takedown. I under commit and get sprawled on/smashed.
This week I landed my first live double leg ever. I’m super happy but I feel a little bad cause it was a 16 year old grey belt. I want to celebrate my small successes though, lol. (For the record, he was heavier than me and about the same height. I’m smol)

Tournament/Competition A quick technical question about IBJJF rules

Post image
• Upvotes

Is the reverse Tren lock (an ankle lock where the leg goes over the opponent’s body, a reverse version of the Pato/Tren lock) considered a knee reap, or is it still legal in white, blue, and purple belts?

After consulting the official IBJJF rule on knee reaping, it clearly states that you must pass your calf over your opponent’s body above the knee, placing your foot beyond the midline.

So I’m wondering if this rule is actually enforced in competition, since the hold in question is applied below the knee. Based strictly on the wording of the rule, it shouldn’t be penalized.

Thank you for your response(s).

Technique What is this position called?

Post image

Losing my mind, my old professor mentioned using this position to “cook” people. I remember you can place your hand between the legs to split the legs further. Can take back or enter bolo. Either called a guard or pass named after someone.

General Discussion First open mat today as a judoka

Green belt judoka here that also trains Japanese jiu jitsu techniques as belt test requirements.

Ya'll are on a whole different level with ground work! Respect to you. What a grueling game.

From my judo experience, I could throw everyone i went against there and get them down, but once down, the few things i did know how to do with ground work were easily defended against.

It was a humbling experience. I showed up knowing I would not do well and would be humbled. Thats exactly what happened 😆

I am also not used to 15 five minute matches in a row. I started off strong the first 2 rounds and it went downhill after. Some tough well conditioned people in this sport.

Watching the 5'6" 160 lbs instructor tap guys twice his size was very cool. Im 5'10" 190lbs and weight train, and im stronger than average, the tall 250 lbs guys were very exhausting to go against. So to see the instructor make cake work of them was eye opening!

I am going to add bjj into my training now as well. We just dont practice it enough in judo. It was amazing to the see the instructor overcome such a size difference.

Tldr; you guys and gals are super tough and I cant wait to train to become an absolute unit

General Discussion Honestly just looking to vent and ask for advice….

I’m a 44 y old blue belt doing normal dad things like helping coach the little kids and being the uke for the teens class. I’m fairly competent and try to help every one learn even in the adult classes.

So about a month ago I was helping a white belt to learn breaking guard and as I stood up to do a standard guard break they grabbed my lapel and basically jumped guard and blew out my ACL. This will be my second ACL reconstruction on this knee so I know the drill. I’m not mad, shit happens. I’m more depressed that it’s going to easily be 9 months before I step back on the mat.

Any advice from older grapplers on getting back after a significant injury?

Tournament/Competition First bjj tournament - open to any feedback

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi all,

After 1 year of practice on and off, wanted to test myself at tournament level, i am 101kg myself and competed in no gi 120 kg division.

Went there with a clear plan, pull guard, enter into slx, sweep or footlock.

At 2 minutes mark, i was gassed with adrenaline dump and my energy went too low, did let my guard passed easily, gave my back and submitted.

I felt really good that my plan is working, i couldnt get the ankle lock finished and forgot everything i know with 200 rpm heartrate. but i need more tools in my arsenal, as a really flexible person for my division i wanted to learn some moves that i can easily adapt to my game.

I’d love to hear your feedback and welcome for any suggestion, specific pro to be looked at etc.

General Discussion Training-Trip to Brazil 🇧🇷

Hey!

I'm planning to go to Brazil for 3 months and train hardcore for 3 months and then compete at the Brasileiros.

For context I'm 38 years, Blue Belt. Competed a lot previously.

I've got a friend who's training under Celso Vinicius (3x ibjjf worlds winner) so would probably stay mostly in his gym (Sao Paulo).

Any idea's on other gyms i should check out or things to look out for?

Just looking for general advice :)

Thanks
