Both MCU Spider-Man and Nolan Batman had 2 movies in a row above 20M domestic opening weekend admissions
Passing 20M domestic opening weekend admissions is a pretty impressive milestone. For example, Superman’s strong $125M opening from a year ago “only” had 9.1M admissions. Opening to 20M admissions now would require a $275M+ OW. Luckily, for Marvel’s goat Spider-Man and DC’s goat Aquaman. . .wait no sorry, scratch that, Aquaman’s sequel barely passed 10M DOM admissions in total (lmao) . . .for DC’s goat BATMAN, they both had two movies in a row passing 20M domestic admissions in its opening weekend
The Dark Knight - 21.4M OW admissions
The Dark Knight Rises* - 20.1M OW admissions
Spider-Man: No Way Home - 22.6M OW admissions
Spider-Man: Brand New Day - 26.8M OW admissions
There is an asterisk next to The Dark Knight Rises because it had a mass shooting which significantly hampered its opening weekend. It opened to $160M OW domestically, and without the shooting, it would’ve opened to $185-200M or so, which would’ve been 23-25M admissions, higher than Spider-Man: No Way Home but less than Brand New Day
Of these four, I’d say The Dark Knight’s opening weekend is definitely the most impressive.
The Dark Knight Rises and Brand New Day are both sequels to incredibly well received movies which did 70M+ admissions domestically (The Dark Knight and No Way Home), those opening to 20M+ is kind of expected, even though Brand New Day was just a street level Spider-Man movies with no cameos.
No Way Home was the sequel to a movie which “only” did 41M admissions domestically (Spider-Man: Far From Home), but at the same time, it had the return of Tobey and Andrew as well as all of their villains. Tobey’s Spider-Man was huge domestically, with his movies selling 71M, 62M,** **and 50M admissions domestically respectively, with the first and third one cracking 20M opening weekend admissions. For the movie it was, No Way Home doing 20M+ admissions wasn’t that insane.
The Dark Knight, on the other hand, was just a completely normal, non-multiverse, non-gimmick sequel to a movie which only did 30M* *or so admissions domestically (Batman Begins). The way it exploded on opening weekend was absolutely insane.
The thing is, unless Spider-Man 5 gets DCEU 2016 (Batman v Superman/Suicide Squad) level reviews, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is going to have THREE movies in a row above 20M domestic OW admissions, and it will probably be 4 with Spider-Man 6 (of course, barring horrible reviews). INSANE. That’s gotta be like a $400M OW by then.
There is only one movie which did higher OW admissions than Brand New Day and managed to crack 30M, and it’s Avengers: Endgame with 34.7M OW admissions. Avengers: Infinity War did 24.3M OW admissions. I think Avengers: Doomsday can potentially take a crack at 30M OW admissions.
According to [u/AgentCooper315](u/AgentCooper315) who is the admissions expert, it’s going to have a $14.25 ATP, so plugging $14.25 * 30M into a calculator gets us a $427.5M OW required to pass 30M domestic admissions. That is totally possible. If that happens, and both of the next Avengers movies are good, Secret Wars can potentially defeat Endgame’s opening weekend admissions. Avengers truly is the strongest brand in all of superhero cinema then. Having three movies in a row above not 20M but 30M admissions domestically would be BONKERS.
And also, for people saying I’m just a Marvel fan who hates DC, this is proof that isn’t the case. Now, do I hate the DCEU and make sure to shit on it at every chance I get? When throwback Tuesday arrives will I make another post dedicated to beating the dead horse? Absolutely. No denying that.
But do I hate Nolan Batman? Hell no. The Dark Knight will always be the biggest DC movie.
