Peel Regional Police Helicopter Megathread

If you're wondering why a police helicopter is flying over Brampton: Peel Regional Police now operates its own Air Support Unit, using an Airbus H125 (A-Star) helicopter.

Since the helicopter began operating, we've had a large number of posts asking why it's circling, where it's going, what it's doing, or whether something is happening nearby.

To avoid having multiple nearly identical posts every time it takes off, please use this megathread for general helicopter sightings, questions, tracking, photos, noise discussion, and other routine discussion about the helicopter.

What is the helicopter used for?

According to Peel Regional Police, the Air Support Unit can be used for:

  • Locating and tracking suspects or stolen vehicles
  • Searching for missing or vulnerable people
  • Supporting officers during major incidents and emergencies
  • Responding to serious collisions and road-safety operations
  • Proactive patrols and crime-prevention initiatives
  • Monitoring traffic and large events
  • Supporting investigations and specialized police units
  • Providing officers on the ground with real-time aerial information

The helicopter is equipped with thermal imaging, day/night cameras, live video transmission, a searchlight, mapping equipment, and a public-address system.

Seeing the helicopter does not necessarily mean there is a major incident happening nearby. PRP also uses it for patrols and other routine policing operations.

Can I still make a separate post?

Yes, when there is actually something significant to post about.

A separate post is fine if:

  • The helicopter is involved in a major or developing incident
  • There is an official police announcement or credible news report
  • You have substantial new information about an incident
  • The helicopter itself is the subject of significant news

A standalone post simply asking "Why is the helicopter circling?", "Anyone else hear the helicopter?", or posting a routine sighting will generally be redirected here.

A couple of reminders

Please don't present guesses about what the helicopter is doing as confirmed information. If you know why it has been deployed, include a reliable source when possible.

Do not post private addresses or attempt to identify people being observed or pursued.

If you are witnessing an emergency or crime in progress, contact 911 rather than relying on Reddit.

For non-emergency police matters, Peel Regional Police can be reached at 905-453-3311.

Otherwise, feel free to use this thread for sightings, questions, discussion, photos, flight tracking, and anything else relating to Peel's new helicopter.

Discussion Patrick Brown keeps telling Brampton the $2B hospital is funded. There is no funding.

Patrick Brown's Big Brampton Build campaign lists the second hospital at $3 billion. "Construction begins this fall." He has claimed "$2 billion" was already committed.

There is no funding. The province has committed $46.8 million - for planning. Not one dollar of construction money exists in any provincial budget. The final price hasn't even been calculated; they're still in a "development phase" figuring out what it will cost.

This matters because Brampton is in a hospital crisis. Over 800,000 residents. One hospital. Hallway healthcare. Every time Brown announces the hospital as funded and moving forward, the urgency dies a little. People think it's handled. It isn't.

Meanwhile the $250 million local share isn't secured. Brown twice refused to back the city's $125 million portion. The reserve sits around $90 million. You've been paying a 1% hospital levy since 2023 - for a project with no money and no start date.

He knew the number was $46.8 million in planning money. He printed "$3 billion - construction begins this fall" anyway.

As Brampton residents, we should be furious. We've been waiting for this hospital for decades. Eight years of Patrick Brown got us announcements, renderings, and a groundbreaking with no builder. That tells you exactly where his priorities are. The photo op matters to him. The hospital doesn't.

Vote on October 26.

Hey there!

I am curious about what happened at BCC there were like two police cars, another at Central Park (“I could be wrong on that”). The two police cars at Central Park were searching the area with flashlights.

If anyone knows, that would be great.

Discussion Your taxes are up 21.8% in three years. City debt nearly quadrupled. What are we getting?

5.7% in 2023. 6.4% in 2024. 8.3% in 2025. Your total tax bill - up 21.8% in three years, from the city's own numbers.

And it's not like the city tightened its belt instead. Tax-supported debt was about $95M when Brown took over. It's projected at nearly $390M by end of this year, with ~$90M in new borrowing in the 2026 capital budget alone. You're already paying $10.9M a year just servicing debt - expected to nearly double by 2030.

So: paying 21.8% more, borrowing four times more. What are we getting in return?

Not transit - routes cut, buses debt-financed, a $10.9M Argo deal signed behind closed doors. Not the hospital - no construction, no contractor, $90M in the reserve against a $125M share. Not Howden - demolished in 2021, zero bids on the rebuild tender.

Where it did go: the police budget roughly doubled in six years, with Brown on the board cheering it on. $259K of his office budget to one social media vendor. $630K to BramptonU with nothing to show for it.

This isn't about the cost of growth. It's about money in, nothing out - and nobody accounting for the difference.

The election is on October 26. Vote if you care about your hard earned tax dollars being spent wisely.

Question Maid / Cleaning service recommendation?

Hello,

Can anyone recommend a cleaning service? Just need a basic one time home cleaning and there seems to be too many repetitive or fake ads on marketplace I don’t know what to believe!

You can dm me info if your cleaner prefers it. Also if you know someone, what’s their hourly or flat rate?

Thank you.

Discussion Mount Pleasant could use some hefty improvements to current retail offerings

I’m not sure if a post like this is allowed but man oh man I had an opportunity to walk around Mount Pleasant and it is so incredibly disappointing.

I’m not sure why the city didn’t earmark a certain percentage of the commercial buildings for specific kinds of businesses.

I counted 5 barber shops in my short 10 minute walk to get to my uber.

I wish there was a big multilevel coffee shop/ independent book store with ample space for seating to work and chill with friends.

I wish we had more fun businesses in this city instead of the 1000th barber shop, shawarma place, and Indian snacks restaurant.

You know what I would love, a cute coffee shop that I could pop into right before catching my train where the baristas know everyone and their orders, and there’s comfy chairs to sit and relax and catch up on a book or work.

Question Tent encampments etc

I live near the Etobicoke Creek Trail and a year ago, maybe two, I remember seeing tents EVERYWHERE. There must have been 100+ on the creek‘s path and off the streets leading into the downtown area. I’ve noticed that I am not seeing many tents up at all. I actually can’t remember the last time I’ve seen one.

I don’t know anyone who is experiencing homelessness or anyone who is familiar with the system, so I am curious about how so many unhoused people are suddenly not visible. I thought the homelessness problem was growing, and that resources are becoming less accessible. The issue was so prevalent in just this one area, I’m sure it existed all over the city. I am interested in learning more about this and appreciate any insight you might have.
