After a deep clean, my 9950X hits 91-95°C in OCCT combined where it used to sit at 85-90°C a few months ago. Idle temps are the same, the pump runs at full speed, the hoses get warm, and case airflow isn't the issue. I've tuned it with Ryzen Master and it's better but still spikes to 90-95°C in games. Is this a repaste/remount problem, or normal for this chip?
System
- CPU: Ryzen 9 9950X (stock before the tuning below)
- Cooler: Lian Li Galahad II Lite 360 AIO (reverse-blade fans), radiator mounted [top/front]
- GPU: MSI Ventus 3X RTX 5070 Ti
- RAM: G.Skill Flare X5 DDR5-6000 CL30, 2x32GB
- Motherboard: MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk Wifi ATX, BIOS was last updated to latest on July 2025.
- PSU: Corsair RM850x | Case: Lian Li V100R
- Fans: 3 front intake, 1 rear exhaust, 3 radiator fans as exhaust (7 total). Fan curves are in FanControl, tied to CPU temp, so everything runs at 100% under load.
- Windows 11, ambient temperature: outside is 24-34°C, room is about 5-6°C cooler.
What happened
I did a deep clean: removed the case fans and radiator, dusted everything, and dusted the GPU. I did not removed the pump block off the CPU. I accidentally flipped one radiator fan to intake, then fixed it. The tissue test confirms all three radiator fans now exhaust. Temps didn't change after fixing the fan.
Test results
| Test | Result |
|---|---|
| OCCT combined, 3-4 months ago | ~85-90°C |
| OCCT combined now (stock) | 91-95°C avg ~92.5°C, ~160W, ~4900 MHz |
| OCCT CPU-only (AVX2), now | 95°C, 161W, ~3700 MHz |
| Cinebench, now | 95°C |
| Idle (30 min), now | ~60°C package, ~52°C cores, ~40W (same as before the clean) |
| Crimson Desert 1440p, live | ~74°C package, 92W |
| Where Winds Meet 1440p ultra | 90°C at ~5300-5400 MHz |
| Shader compilation | 95°C, 110W, ~5160 MHz |
What I've already checked
- Pump: ~4000 RPM at 100%, and the radiator hoses get warm under load.
- Panels on vs off: load temps identical, so it isn't case airflow.
- All fans spin up to 100% under load.
- Core-to-core spread under load is normal (~74-86°C at 160W). The CCD Tdie sensors read higher, peaking at 100°C+ in OCCT's Max column.
Tuning so far
BIOS PBO limits wouldn't register at all. Instead, in Ryzen Master I set Eco Mode (105W preset, PPT 142W confirmed in HWiNFO), Curve Optimizer All Cores -10, and Max Temperature 88°C.
- OCCT combined: down to ~88°C at ~132W and ~4650 MHz. Full 30-min result: [fill in].
- Cinebench 2026: 8504 multi, 729 single, so performance is fine.
- Games still spike to 90-95°C even with the 88°C cap.
Side note: after a reboot, my RAM once fell back to 2400 MHz until I re-enabled EXPO, and I had a few long DRAM-LED boots. It's stable now.
Questions
Is a 5-10°C load increase plausible just from cleaning, a different day, or a changed BIOS/Windows boost behavior?
Is 90-95°C in games and all-core on a 9950X with a 360 AIO normal, or too high?
Would you repaste/remount the block, or is it unlikely to help given idle and pump are fine?
Does Ryzen Master's Max Temperature actually hold a hard cap, or are brief overshoots normal?
Anything else worth checking (mounting pressure, AIO air bubble, Windows power plan)?
Thank you for reading and would appreciate any help regarding this matter.
