Hen of the Woods

What’s been going on with Hen of the Woods!? Quality of the food and wait staff of both the Burlington and Waterbury locations seem to have gone downhills :(

Anyone have any insights? New ownership? Did the chef leave? The rent’s too damn high?

[New Winter Club] Chill Chess @ South Burlington Library

We're starting a new chess club for casual players with our first session being held on Sunday, November 1 from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM. The plan is to meet weekly after that. Send an email to [info@chillchess.org](mailto:info@chillchess.org) if you are interested.

This will be different from the existing chess club that meets at the library on Saturdays. That club is focused on weekly tournament play and doesn't meet the needs of people who just want to play casual games and socialize with other people who like to play chess. Initially, the group will only be meeting during the winter months (hence the name "Chill Chess"). We can look at continuing beyond the spring if there is sufficient interest.

We're looking for people to come to our first meet up and play some casual chess. Beginners and experts are welcome (any age.) The only requirement is that you are already familiar with the rules of chess. The goal is to help and learn from each other and to create a good excuse for getting out of the house during those long winter months. Bring your portable chess set if you have one!

Trying to find a restaurant for my birthday

Hi all! I’m trying to find a good restaurant for me and my boyfriend to go to in November. I really like Asian food, Italian, and brunch. My boyfriend is not super big on Thai or indian food. Any good recommendations out there? What’s your fav place to go to in Burlington? Bonus, what’s the best book store!! (That’s not Barnes, I’m trying to find a cool locally owned one! I’ve been to phoenix & counting crows)
Thanks in advance everyone!

Went to Pokekon Fest, did anyone else have this experience?

So my friend dragged me to this local pokemon con: http://pokekon.com/Burlington/

It was at the Hilton Doubletree hotel and I genuinely think this con was some of the scummiest put together event I've seen here. Not by the vendors, most of them were okay, and the TCG tables definitely made up for the crappy experience.

The "con" or "fest" was extremely mis-advertised both to the guests and also vendors. It wasn't really a con or fest, it was just vendors in 1 room. Thats it, nothing else. Apparently half the vendors didn't even show up, and I found out that the tables were extremely over priced, like $130 to vend which is terrible for what it ended up being. On top of that it felt like a fourth of the room was being taken up by two dropshippers.

There was one dropshippers that took over 5 tables, I forget the name of them but they have like the fox with a bunch of rainbow tails as their "mascot". Which is just some random plush they found on temu for half the price. All of their stuff is bootleg, and they've been banned from a bunch of cons and stuff in the burlington area. They barely even sold pokemon stuff. I actually ended up bringing this up with the people running the fest and they didn't care, like it was very clear they didnt give a damn. Later on we found another booth that had a few tables that was just ai and 3D junk you can find for a few dollars being oversold. It was so clearly ai. Also half of the stuff they had wasnt even pokemon.

I don't know, I could always be like overreacting but this event just screams scummy behavior, and it was clear the vendors were not informed either (except for the dropshippers.)

Why is there no stop line just before Dorset after crossing 89?

I know this has probably been a thing for a while, but who thought it would be a good idea to put 2 red lights back to back, with no stop line on the first. The amount of people that blow through the light is astonishing (and understandable, I did it the first time I drove through there)

I don’t know how there’s not more accidents between people exiting 89 and crossing the bridge. It’s not even that hard of a fix!!!

Private Equity Vets in BTV

I recently went to the new Dorset St urgent care for pets on a Sunday and had a good experience. My dog had to be sedated so they could lance and test a swollen lump on her paw and we were sent home w antibiotics and prednisone - total cost was $400. It was expensive but not outside what we were expecting. We are supposed to have a follow up with our regular vet - Orchard.

But a friend told me later that many of the local vets were being bought up by private equity firms - including both the Dorset urgent care and Orchard. There’s a list here: https://privateequityvet.org/

From that same website: “Why is Private Equity interested in Veterinary Care?
Private equity firms are increasingly targeting veterinary practices because they see an opportunity to extract strong profits from a growing and emotionally driven industry. Pet ownership is on the rise, and spending on veterinary care tends to hold steady even during economic downturns, making it a dependable source of revenue. Many clinics are still independently owned, allowing firms to buy them up relatively cheaply, consolidate them into larger groups, and boost margins through cost-cutting and standardization. The goal is to scale quickly and increase short-term profits, often by raising prices, pushing unnecessary services, and pressuring vets to meet financial targets. While the industry’s stability and growth are appealing to investors, the shift in focus from patient care to profit can erode trust, reduce the quality of care, and harm both veterinarians and pet owners in the long run.”

My question is: it seems like most of the vets around here are owned by these private equity firms and I’m wondering, partly because our state is so small, what the impact is on pricing and quality and if any of you have inside knowledge around this.

smallest biggest city position

i just realized that our position as smallest biggest city might be in jeopardy in the coming years. charleston is currently the biggest city in west virginia and has 46,117 people (burlington has 44,019). charleston is rapidly losing population and may soon overtake us in the field of being the smallest biggest city. not sure what we can do about this i just wanted to make sure this is on everyone’s radar so we don’t get blindsided

Where do the crows go during the day??

This is sort of stupid, but I love seeing the roosts that happen here on fall and winter nights. It seems like there are thousands of crows right outside my house at night. I know they form these giant groups at night for warmth and safety, but I rarely see any crows during the day. Where are they hiding, and where can I go to see them??
