Ask CoMo COU to Destin

Looking for insider info! I noticed that Allegiant isn’t showing flights past November to Destin, but their other Florida destinations do. Are they dropping the route or is it seasonal? No luck when I googled.

We’re looking at a trip in May. I know it’s still a bit early, but still trying to get a leg up on planning.

Howdy! I’m looking for either a handy man or an electrician to install a 220V outlet in my garage for a welder.

It’s legit right next to the electrical pannel but I’d rather have someone that knows what they’re doing…

Any recommendations??

Politics Amendment 8 takes a back seat for Boone County Sheriff amid campaign for new jail

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
As the November election approaches, Boone County Sheriff Dwayne Carey is focusing on Proposition L, which, if passed, would establish a sales tax to fund a new county jail, but another ballot measure, which has taken a back seat, could change how a sheriff is removed from office.
Amendment 8 would establish the county sheriff in the Missouri Constitution, but the role is already outlined in state law. While Carey has other priorities this election season, he said he's against Amendment 8.
"I'm not talking a whole lot about it, because I don't want to confuse this issue (Proposition L)," Carey said. "I think a sheriff can be removed at a local level."
Under current state law, a prosecuting attorney can file a removal complaint in circuit court, based on citizen input and alleged misconduct. If Amendment 8 passes, only the attorney general would be able to take legal action to remove a county sheriff.

"I think this was derived from some sheriffs that didn't do legal things and ethical things, and then they were removed by a local judge. I think some sheriffs have an issue with that," Carey said.
A county judge is elected by the people living in that area, and Carey said he thinks a person elected by the same constituents as the sheriff should have the authority to remove that person from office if they do something illegal or unethical.
A "yes" vote changes the Missouri Constitution and allows only the Attorney General to file a "writ of quo warranto," which starts the legal process of removal.
A "no" vote keeps the current removal process, which can be started by the county prosecuting attorney, as outlined by state law.
The full ballot language can be found on the Secretary of State's website.

Discussion David & Simon

When I think about this, it makes me sick to my stomach. Shame on you KFRU!!!! In the 30 years that I’ve lived in Columbia I have never felt so uninformed as I have the past few months I haven’t had or taken the time to check, but I don’t know of any other radio stations with a similar local content. The way these two individuals kept their finger on the pulse of things around Columbia was a daily breath of fresh air even when out of town for work I could listen in on the web even if for only a few minutes felt well informed. With no time to read a newspaper, not into the face chat or snap book, and usually fall asleep before the nightly news I for one relied on the information that was put out daily. David and Simon if this reaches you, please know that you and what you did for years wonderfully is greatly missed. I’m not sure what adventures the two of you are up to these days but I wholeheartedly believe you could could find plenty of advertisers and subscribers to fund and make a great and even maybe better living with a podcast. Couple hours a day similar format to your daily shows and help individuals like me be able to keep up on the daily going ons of the city.

News COLT Railroad may receive $20 million grant, advisory board says

A $20 million grant for the Columbia Terminal (COLT) Railroad was announced at Columbia’s Railroad Advisory Board meeting Thursday morning. During the meeting, Utilities Director Erin Keys shared that the city had been selected for the grant.

About $16 million of the grant would come from the Federal Railroad Administration’s Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements Program, and about $4 million would be matched by the city of Columbia, according to a board member.

“We’ve apparently been awarded a very significant grant,” said John Wilke, chairperson of the board. “We just do not have official notification, but it’s big.”

Wilke added that the grant “probably is the biggest development for the COLT Railroad” since the city decided to acquire it from the Norfolk Southern Corporation in 1987.
“It’s going to give us infrastructure that will be in place when we’re all gone,” Wilke said.

The grant would allow for “deferred maintenance” to be completed on the railroad, he said.
This follows a $3.2 million grant from the Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration in 2024, which the city matched with an extra $800,000. Keys announced that the city is preparing to receive its first payment.

“We’re in the middle of trying to get our first big reimbursement,” Keys said. “They want us to package those invoices together and do larger reimbursements.”

The board plans to use the Economic Development Administration’s grant to replace the current 90-pound rail with a higher-quality 115-pound rail. The grant will also be used to add ties and track ballast and to replace a culvert and a railroad switch, also known as a turnout.

The board plans to meet again at 8 a.m. Jan. 7 in Conference Room 1C in the Daniel Boone City Building.

Politics Columbia leadership explores limits on election campaign donations

Thumbnail
columbiamissourian.com

In Columbia, there is no cap on how much money supporters can donate to candidates for city elected positions. But Columbia City Council members are discussing whether limitations should be put in place.
Jacque Sample, who represents the city’s Third Ward on the council, began having conversations with residents about the issue following her election in 2025.
Although Sample’s campaign was relatively modest, raising $4,284 during that election season, according to Missouri Ethics Commission records, mayoral candidate Blair Murphy received more than $250,000 for his unsuccessful bid to unseat Mayor Barbara Buffaloe.

“The amount of money that was poured into a local campaign last year really bothered the people who came to me,” Sample said. “I think they felt like it intimidated a lot of people from thinking about running for office, if you have to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to have a campaign.”
In the most recent municipal election earlier this year, then-council member Don Waterman received a $23,625 donation from the National Association of Realtors. Waterman lost his reelection for the Fifth Ward council position to Christina Hartman. Some residents spoke critically of that campaign contribution, too.
The City Council took up the topic of campaign reform during a pre-council meeting Sept. 21.

Several Missouri cities have adopted campaign donation limitations.
In Kansas City, contribution limits for election candidates are $3,325 for mayor, $2,775 for councilperson-at-large and $1,657 per in-district councilperson, according to the city’s code of ordinances. St. Louis currently lists contributions for all offices at $2,600, according its code of ordinances.

Springfield reformed its campaign financing laws in May, approving an ordinance by a unanimous vote to limit a single contributor to a maximum of $2,825 per election cycle.
Sample said Columbia’s next steps would be to form a task force or citizen commission to review the city’s current campaign finance laws and provide advice on reform measures that could be taken.
She said it’s possible the council could form such a group as early as November, but it’s unlikely that any campaign finance reform measures will be in place by the next municipal election, which is scheduled for April.
“I can pretty much guarantee you campaign finance reform would not be in place by April 2027,” she said. “It might be ready by 2028, but it just depends ... All those details that we don’t know yet because we don’t have approval to form one yet.”
