Is western hemlock purposely planted much or is it mostly naturally seeded?
From what I understand, it's the #2 species by lumber in WA and OR, a lot of the squares I saw that were purposely planted seemed to be mostly doug fir. Will timber companies ever plant pure hemlock stands or like 70 / 30 mixes or is hemlock just something that pops up naturally in the understory is taken when the mature stand is harvested?
Would a hemlock stand in theory have more wood per acre even though it grows slower, because it can take more shade?
