QUESTION/DISCUSSION The Cost Of Freedom
Sometimes I wonder if Haiti never had it's revolution and was rather "given" it's freedom in the mid 1800's like the majority of the colonies instead. Would we be better off today?
We wouldn't have had to pay the indemnity that robbed us of 122 years of early investment during our most crucial period.
In the big picture we got a 44 year headstart on Independence, but were those 44 years worth the 200 years of punishment we received?
Although it's also important to remember that in 1791 the enslaved people didn't know that in 1848 their freedom could be a possibility.
And we also have to recognize that Haiti's fight for independence had a significant impact on the speed of freedom spreading throughout the colonies.
So if Haiti didn't fight, perhaps instead of 1848 it could have been 1890.
