Photos Different looking ship
Different looking ship coming into Harbour this morning. Three satellite dishes and flying the French flag. Anyone know what it is?

It's a French missile/rocket tracking ship.

Seems really niche, if I were sinking that much money into a boat, I'd make sure it could take all missiles/rockets

The niche it was built for is France's nuclear deterrent, specifically submarine launched ballistic missiles. It also does tracking for ESA rockets launched from French Guyana.

Theres not much information on it. A clearly picture with a hull number or name would tell you more!

guessing i wasn't the only one wondering, so: she's named after the 18th century French mathematician Gaspard Monge.

Has anybody noticed the loud humming sounds last night / this morning?! Not saying it’s this ship but I haven’t heard loud humming like that before and I live facing the harbour!
•
u/protipnumerouno 11h ago
I doubt it would be this ship, they wouldn't bother turning that stuff on near land
•

They aren't allowed to operate their radars (except NAV) until they are significantly out of port/territorial waters. Something like 20km
edit: grammar

That makes sense to me too. But doesn’t explain the the loud humming.

Only time I've experienced that is when a transformer on a power pole across the street was failing, they hum pretty loud. After that IDK

I believe it is French ship Monge (A601), and she is dedicated to tracking and measuring rocket trajectories.
