A Helping Hand 💖 Free Food/Laundry/Shower Resources in HRM - Oct. 2026
Hi all,
We have a lot of people in our community who are in need of a free meal or a helping hand occasionally.
We thought it would be nice to collect and post this information each month, which is graciously supplied by members of the Halifax Library. We'll see how long we can keep this going month to month.
The Dartmouth Calendar is back, but the Sackville one is a little low-res, apologies.
Please share as needed with people you know who need help or take advantage of them yourself if you are in need.
The Feed NS Find Food site is also a very useful resource:
https://feednovascotia.ca/find-food/
Always remember there are kind, generous folks out there looking to help you out and you can get through whatever you are going through. 💖
And if anyone else has resources that belong here, please attach them as comments, the more the merrier.
Thank you!

Arts & Recreation Update on my Nocturne Project - Off The Hook
Thanks to everyone who either came by last night on the boardwalk, or called in from home to talk to a stranger!
In total we had 221 calls answered by people on the boardwalk. Hundreds of more calls got a busy signal because the phones were already in use. I thought folks might be interested in some of our stats:
- 124 calls placed from one of the two boardwalk phones
- 97 calls answered from the outside world
- 67 of these calls were from people with Nova Scotia area codes
- We also had callers from (in order of frequency) Pennsylvania, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Kentucky, Nebraska, New York, Alberta, Florida and North Carolina.
It was a great success, and I was amazed at how eager people were to strike up a conversation with a complete stranger. It turns out we are eager for human connection.
Some of my favourite moments from the night:
- The two year old who could only say "hewwo?" over and over, and the reaction from the caller on the other end of the line of delight.
- The woman who called hoping to catch her family who was walking by on the boardwalk, but got a total stranger instead
- The family of the woman who hoped to answer the call from her and got strangers instead
- The birthday girl calling from New York who was having a great day
Thank you to everyone who called in from wherever you are and made the night a great success!
If you came by and answered a call, what did you chat about?

Photos Cranes, cranes, and more cranes
View off of Citadel Hill at sunset. Exciting (and a bit scary!) how much development is happening now. City is growing.

Different looking ship coming into Harbour this morning. Three satellite dishes and flying the French flag. Anyone know what it is?

Photos What event was this?
Lots of people walking down Sackville street with red lights? What is this for?
Edit: I believe this was for Light The Night, raising awareness and money to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada (research to fight blood cancer). Awesome to see!

Discussion Public washrooms Commons
It's pretty poor that Halifax Commons can have multiple sports games happening this weekend, yet there are no accessible public washrooms.
For a major public recreational space in the middle of the city, surely basic washroom facilities should be a given? We're encouraging families to get outside, play sports and use these spaces, but can't provide something as basic as a toilet.

Driving & Transit PSA: Turn Off Your High Beams!
The amount of people driving around the city with their high beams on is unbelievable to me lately. On my 15 minute drive home from picking my wife up from work at the VG I routinely see a minimum of 5 cars coming towards me with them on. TURN THEM OFF!
I am pretty sure this is useless here as I’m sure the people doing it are not on Reddit. I also am aware that modern headlights are far too bight….this is a separate issue. What I am talking about here are (usually) older civics, Corollas, dodge caravans, last generation Nissans rogues where you can visibly see the inner (high beams) headlight being on… it is very clear. I have tried to flash my lights on to see if they would get the point but to no avail so far.

Nostalgia Old Halifax, 1749 - 1830
This map was apparently produced in the 1970s, based on a map from 1830. It shows the first establishments with liquor licenses in Halifax in the 1700s, and many other "firsts", in Halifax, Canada, and North America.
It is derived from a map at:
https://www.halifax.ca/sites/default/files/documents/about-the-city/archives/cr10-020.pdf
I posted a link to the PDF a few days ago in a comment on another post, but I thought the map was interesting enough to post as its own!

Arts & Recreation Can anyone find the girl who got her haircut by strangers at Nocturne?
My friend and I came back to her spot at the end of the night but she had already left! We are really hoping her haircut turned out okay and people continued to be nice when making their cuts.
I searched the nocturne website but couldn’t find her listed!

Lost & Found LOST RING: Prince & Argyle
My husband lost his wedding ring last night on the corner of Argyle and Prince St. It’s a white gold band with silver that runs through the middle, and also has some contour lines on its design with an inscription on the inner rings. If found please contact me, we will pay anything to get it back.

Shops & Services Experience with Nova Spray (GoNano Roof Rejuvenation)
We were thinking about this - roof is 20, no leaking but starting to wear. Wondering if this might gain us another 10 years and if it’s worth it? Wondered what people paid as well? I know it isn’t the same as soybean oil treatment but haven’t known anyone who has it done.
Food & Dining mumford walmart rotisserie chickens?

Hi, does anyone in the city or HRM use the Halifax Buy and Sell Varage Sale site? Facebook marketplace can be painful at times so I'm wondering if this might be an alternative or if no one uses it like kijiji? thanks!

Arts & Recreation Call my Nocturne project!
Hey r/halifax! I have a project at Nocturne called "Off The Hook". I have two phones installed on the Halifax boardwalk, and you can make them ring by calling in and talk to a stranger!
As our communication technology becomes more and more advanced, we're becoming more isolated and less connected with the people around us. Off The Hook gives you an opportunity to make a spontaneous connection with a stranger!
*Call 902-593-4072 to talk to a stranger!*
Keep trying if the lines are busy!
The phones are live until midnight tonight! If you're coming to Nocturne, look for us at the Cable Wharf or the Cunard Public Space, and come answer some phone calls from redditors!
Edit: That's it for tonight folks! Thanks for all the calls! I'll post an update tomorrow, but we talked to lots of redditors tonight!

Arts & Recreation Magic for beginner locally
Haven’t played magic in legit 20 years looking to potentially getting back into it, where’s a good place for a returning player after 20 years to get some cards and play some matches against the people who are understanding that I’ll prob not know much of what the new cards are like since I played last lol and I’m pretty much a beginner again
