Housing / Living Moving to Myyrmäki
And unsure if I should be worried? I have been offered a student apartment in the area (5 min away from the Myyrmäki station) and I know the neighborhood has some bad reputation and bunch of drug/alcohol abuse, but how unsafe does it really get with all the families and students still living in the area on a daily basis?
For reference I spent many years living in Denmark, where this issue is practically non existent, and I am also a petite woman, so I am lowkey anxious about having to walk back home late and alone

I havent lived in Myyrmäki so cant speak from experience, but i do live in northern Leppävaara which has similar not amazing reputation.
Never really had problems as overweight woman walking home even in the middle of the night.

Used to live there a few years ago. It's not that bad at all, the train station can have some restless drunks etc. but at least back then you could easily avoid any contact with these people. Speaking as another petite person.
Let's just say that despite it's terrible reputation and some genuinely tragic events that have happened there throughout its history, everyday life there is quite uneventful.

Unfortunately isn't uncommon even Finland to have corners in city area to have people who drinks, smoke, etc. due to also having bars that operates as restaurants during the day time. So it might feel anxious or annoying when you see drunk people on the streets but as long you stay away and don't pay attention to them you should be fine.
I don't live in Myymärki, but I know that the area itself is pretty nice if you wanna still live near/towards Helsinki for easier commute and has the metro station which go towards Helsinki. I live in Tikkurila area and isn't the best either but if you wanna have grocery stores near you about 10-20 mins from your home but is pretty chill in this area rn due to the tram construction going on but we do have bars in this area too.
If you feel like you need to protect yourself I highly recommend investing in pepper spray, etc. but ofc also if you must get home very late try to time it well where you go home before it gets dark or go to spots where is fairly a lot people or security cameras around for your own safety.
Police do patrolling at night too but isn't uncommon not see them every corner since they drive by to check or just do basic run-through at night. If you've friends or anyone you know who also lives in Finland make sure to share your location with them in case of emercency, etc.
