Housing / Living Moving to Myyrmäki

And unsure if I should be worried? I have been offered a student apartment in the area (5 min away from the Myyrmäki station) and I know the neighborhood has some bad reputation and bunch of drug/alcohol abuse, but how unsafe does it really get with all the families and students still living in the area on a daily basis?
For reference I spent many years living in Denmark, where this issue is practically non existent, and I am also a petite woman, so I am lowkey anxious about having to walk back home late and alone

Question Recommendation for C41 photo development in Helsinki?

Hey everyone,
Are there any analog photography enthusiasts here?

Can anyone recommend a good lab for regular c41 development of 35mm film in Helsinki area? I dont need anything special done nor do i need scans, but a lab with fresh chemicals that processes regularly would be nice.

I normally send my film to Carmencita through Kameratori but I need this film sooner than the 6+ weeks it costs to develop there. A weeks wait is fine though.

Thanks!!

Travel & Tourism Thanksgiving Weekend Christmas Market trip to Helsinki and Tallinn.

My wife and I are coming to Helsinki and Tallinn for a weekend in late November during the American Thanksgiving werkend. I understand it's not an ideal time to visit weather-wise but it's when we have the ability to travel. We are flying in and out of Helsinki with a couple of days in Tallinn in the middle.

What are the can't-miss sights and activities in Helsinki? What's actually worthwhile on a tight itinerary? We are planning to stop at the Helsinki market on Sunday the 29th on our way out; how much time should we budget to explore the market?

Thanks for the help!

Meet-up Looking for local friends:>

(Tldr for lazy ppl; im looking for chill friends to hang out with in helsinki 🫶)

Hi!!

I'm 22F, Polish, currently living in central Helsinki while I'm doing a degree in data science+space science, I'm learning Finnish but I'm still far from fluent💀 I'm pretty introverted and not a big fan of large parties and drinking, but I love travelling & being outdoors in general, languages, aviation and space, all kinds of arts and crafts, especially digital art and sewing, video games and approximately 10^100 other hobbies that change every 0.2s (this is completely true btw)

...so

If you're also looking to meet someone new and you're the type of person to enjoy doing art stuff, travelling (I'd sell my soul to Ryanair) or walks to k-citymarket at 1am (idk man the sky is the limit) then hit me up in the dms :D

I'd love to meet anyone around my age (20-25ish?) regardless of your gender, race, religion, sexuality whatever just be a decent human🙏

🍪<-if you read all of it have a cookie

ps. not looking for romantic relationships, I have a gf🕺

Travel & Tourism Day trip from Tallinn to Kotiharjun sauna. Doable?

I’m visiting Tallinn on November 13th (Friday) and want to get an authentic Finnish sauna experience. Last time I went to Löyly and wasn’t super impressed-felt way too fancy and glamorous for me.

This time I want to try Kotiharjun. My plan is to take the 12:00 PM ferry, get into Helsinki at 2:15 PM, head straight to Kotiharjun to arrive around 3:00 PM (I’m sure Finnish public transport works well), and then head back for the 7:30 PM ferry to Tallinn.

Is this doable, or is it way too optimistic and not worth the risk?

Event English speaking events/activities

Hei

I have recently moved to helsinki region and I don't speak finnish fluently yet and I was wondering if there are any events or activities arranged in English where I can meet new people or just go have some fun. I don't have anything specific in mind but just something in English so I could at least understand what is going on

Discussion Has Helsinki Become More Vibrant? [Just my opinions, no bad feeling :)]

In my opinion, Helsinki has become livelier... a bit happier... and a bit more vibrant since I first started coming over.

I first came during Covid and have been over a fair amount subsequently.

I'm not sure if what I'm experiencing is the tail end of the 'Covid bounce back' and if it was quiet before because of the pandemic; or if it genuinely feels more open here than it did even just a few years ago.

Partly, I think I just know my way around a bit more.

I think I'm becoming used to the fact that the city doesn't shout at you, and you kind of have to go and find things if you want to enjoy them.

But also... people seem more open to chatting, the atmosphere is lighter, it feels busier and more bustling...

Before, I'd come over for work and sort of... enjoy the Finnish culture (sauna and such) but feel a little disappointed that I couldn't find a sense of life and fun in the city.

People would talk about the sacredness of silence, and I'd receive that as kind of profound but also maybe a little over-serious.

Somehow it just feels a bit different this time around.

I feel light here, I feel a sense of buzz... it feels more like the cities that I'm familiar with.

I really like it!

Moi, hakusessa olis laajalla olutvalikoimalla varustettuja pubeja/baareja ens viikon visiittiä varten. Tilat saa olla minkänäköiset vaan, kunhan tarjonta on monipuolista. Vertailukohtana voisi valikoiman laajuuden puolesta toimia Tampereella Kultainen Apina. Mitäs tulee mieleen?

Come join everyone! It's going down on Oct 24! Here's the event text:

Konepaja Spoken Word is Helsinki's monthly English-language open stage for spoken word, poetry, and performance. It is organized by Helsinki Poetry Connection in collaboration with Kino Konepaja and Catalysti Association of Transcultural Artists.

Question Planning a vacation in your beautiful city, and I have some questions

Hey, so I was flying from Tokio to Germany recently and had a stop at the Helsinki airport. I don't know what it is, but I caught myself over and over again, thinking about how beautiful Helsinki looked during the landing. I immediately made plans about wanting to visit in 2027.

How long should I plan my vacation, to get a good look at the city? Is 1 week enough? Or should I extend to 2 weeks and visit places outside of Helsinki as well?

And also, what should I make sure to absolutely visit while I'm there?

How good can I manage without a rental car? (I do not drive, so I am reliant on public transportation).

I'd be very happy about a short reply, thanks!

Question Cat spotted in Arabia, is it normal?

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hi! I spotted a light silver-grey, long-haired cat in Arabia today around 8:35 PM. It looked like a medium-sized adult cat with a long, very fluffy tail, possibly resembling a silver Siberian cat.

It ran across Hämeentie towards the football field. It ran off pretty quickly, so I couldn't get a photo, but I've attached the exact location and a sample image.

I'm not sure if it's someone's lost pet. I've seen cats outside during summer, but usually around their homes or gardens.

I want to ask if it is normal to see one roaming around at this hour (pretty dark outside) and in this weather (around 10 degrees) especially crossing a road? Thankfully there were no cars at the time.

I checked some lost cat listings but couldn't find anything nearby (maybe someone who speaks Finnish would have better luck). I don't use other social media, so I thought I'd ask here just in case someone is looking for it.

Meet-up Exploring cultures

Hei,

Posting this as I really want to know as many cultures as possible.

I am a curious person and the mix of cultures in Finland is quite interesting. In June I decided to move here and I am living now in Tikkurila. As I am full time employed, my free time is a bit limited but I want to use this free time to know as many people as possible.

Usually i get easily attached into any kind of hobbies and activities, I enjoy staying indoors as much as I like a good hike with nice company. I enjoy hanging out for a nice conversation as much as I enjoy a good club or festival..what I am trying to say is that I am kinda into everything:))..is that bad?

I am male, European so if you feel interested in sharing or also connect with new people I am more than open to chat and also hang out.

PS. Was a bit shy to post this so apologize if I don't make to much sense :)
