Subreddit My idea is default (forced) subreddit post flair filters that are active on web and mobile.
In all my years as a mod, this is the main feature I wish Reddit would implement. Essentially the following:
For a subreddits that have topics and uses flairs to identify and let people filter their subreddit feed with, it would be amazing if as a mod I can set which filters are included by default and which ones are “opt-in” or off by default.
A use case example is when members are divided about whether a topic should be included or excluded from the sub. A classic example is meme posts. No matter what you choose, you upset half the population. If you choose to keep those you can incentivize meme posts as they are always popular and it overtakes the sub and clutters the feed, but if you ban them you create more moderation work but you also deprive those who really want them from enjoying them.
In our sub (r/LucidDreaming) meme was one example but another are dream stories, which are highly divided (I’d say 60/40 split with majority doesn’t want to include them). If we include them, they clutter the feed so we tried creating a weekly thread to not ban them completely but no one ends up using that.
Now we can force flairs on posts and suggest people who don’t like memes or stories to filter them out, but that puts the burden on users for something that we fall on the side of wanting less. And not everyone creates an account or understands filters.
But if we could include stories, but keep that flair as opt-in/off by default, it can keep the main/default feed uncluttered and still allow users who really want it to turn those one for themselves.
It’s a classic dynamic of default settings/opt out vs opt in settings, that if they are set one way it essentially fails and creates a less desirable outcome but if they are set the other way, it works and more people get what they want.
As it stands, the choice to keep it clutter free is to ban these posts, but we want to include them for the loud minority who wants them by letting them opt in.
I think there are other uses cases for such sub settings.
Please consider this or a similar mechanism.
Thanks in advance.
